The addition of fish oil (20 g for 3 weeks) to diets of 7 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) contributed to correction of metabolic derangement and nitrogen release, to alleviation of clinical symptoms. The most pronounced positive shifts were reported in early CRF. This gives evidence for a preventive value of diets supplemented with fish oil which secure delay of terminal CRF.     

Characteristics of structural changes in the internal organs of animals after administration of dried yeast]

Morphofunctional analysis of the state of internal organs was made in rats which received varying amounts of mushroom powder. It has been established that the new product induces development of endovasculitis, dystrophy and lympho-histiocytic infiltrates of parenchymatous organs. The data obtained have evidenced the development of delayed allergic reactions to mushroom powder. A conclusion has been made on the necessity of its limited inclusion into food ration.     

The effect of the temperature of the neutron gas on the length of run and fuel breeding in a power reactor

In the paper are given the results of calculations on the study of the effect of the temperature of the neutron gas on the length of run of a reactor, the breeding of Pu²³⁹ and the quantity of electrical energy generated. The calculations were carried out on a basis conforming to two alternative cores of a uranium-graphite reactor with sodium coolant: with zirconium-clad fuel elements (alternative I) and steel-clad ones (alternative II). It was established that for reactors of a given type, the most economically suitable temperature for the neutron gas is 900 ° to 1000 °K.Investigations on the dependence of the run time of the reactor and the breeding factor on the neutron gas temperature were also carried out for two other types of reactors- the homogeneous sodium-graphite and the heterogeneous uranium-graphite with gas coolant. The results of the calculations are offered in the form of graphs.     

Influence of methandrostenolone on some aspects of protein metabolism in rats in the context of various protein rations]

Wistar male-rats receiving by mouth dianobol for 10 days and 9 months and fed on rations with different proportions of protein were investigated. Dianobol is shown to produce under definite conditions changes in the intensity of the protein synthesis in the muscle tissue and liver of the test animals and also to raise the activity of tryptophan-peroxidase and of alanine-amintransferase, the protein level in the ration being here of substantial importance. With its long-term administration to rats dianobol displays an androgenic effect on the gonads and the supernumerally genitals without exercising any stimulating action on the weight gain.     

Influence of vitamins C, Bl, and B6 on the diurnal periodicity of the glucocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex in patients with atherosclerotic cardiosclerosis]

Diurnal periodicity of the glucocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex was studied in 52 patients with atherosclerotic cardiosclerosis without and with circulatory insufficency of the I, IIA and IIB stage, based on the determination of 17-OCS in 3 portions of the urine collected at equal 8-hours long time intervals. The patients without circulatory insufficiency and with insufficiency of the 1st stage received ascorbic acid in amounts of 0.3 g thrice a day, along with vitamins B1 and B6 (5 and 6 per cent) in doses of 1 ml for 14-16 days. Patients with circulatory insufficiency of the IIA and IIB stages were given vitamins and cardiac glycosides. Investigations ascertained disturbed rhythmic and functional activity of the suprarenals in these patients. The treatment resulted in improving the glucocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex with simultaneous normalization of the rhythmic activity of the suprarenals.     

Relation of actual nutritional characteristics to the health status of retirees and persons of preretirement age employed in mechanical engineering production

Actual nutrition and health state were investigated in 406 males of pre-pension and pension age (40-70 years) engaged in physical work (III category of difficulty) at an engineering plant. The chemical composition of their food was evaluated with respect to 74 chemical elements. The state of the workers' health was evaluated by the data obtained from the registers kept at the Plant medical unit. A relationship has been established between the character of the actual nutrition and the presence of an age-dependent disease, as well as the role of certain nutrients in the development of this or that disease in different age periods. A conclusion has been made on the necessity of the development of differential physiological requirements in the nutrients and energy for elder subjects engaged in the social industry, and inclusion of the rational nutrition into the complex of measures for prevention of age-dependent diseases.     

Glycopeptide obtained from k-casein and its effect on protein assimilation

The products of restricted proteolysis of kappa-casein were separated by gel filtration. Intravenous injection of high- and low-molecular fractions substantially reduced the pentagastrin-stimulated acid secretion in the anesthetized rat stomach. Intermediate fractions had lesser physiological activity. One of the active fractions administered intraintestinally inhibited acid secretion and reduced the pentagastrin-stimulated secretion in rat weanling isolated stomach. All the active fractions inhibited the stimulated secretion in rats with a ligated vagus. It is concluded that the nervous system does not play a crucial role in the mechanism by which gastric acid secretion is inhibited by the products of restricted proteolysis of kappa-casein. Decreasing acid secretion in the stomach, glycopeptide provides for the conditions favouring the efficacy of protein utilization at an early age. It is suggested that the effect of glycopeptide obtained from kappa-casein on the process of assimilation is mediated via peptide hormones.
