Macromonomers (MMs) were obtained with different proportions of dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA) and tall oil fatty acid (TOFA). The MMs were characterized by their acid value (AV), their hydroxyl value (OHV), IR spectroscopy, NMR, electrospray ionization–mass spectrometry, UV spectroscopy, rheological, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, gloss, flexibility, and adherence analyses. The presence of hydroxyl and ester groups and double bonds were confirmed by IR and NMR analyses. IR analysis showed that the intensity of the OH groups decreased with the addition of TOFA. In all cases, the AVs of the MMs were lower than those of DMPA and TOFA. By electrospray ionization–mass spectrometry, the formation of the DMPA homopolymers and structures with molecular weights higher than that of DMPA were observed. All of the MMs were amorphous. The viscosity of the MMs decreased with the addition of TOFA. The gloss values of the MMs at 85° were higher than 100, and the flexibility was good. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Graft copolymers of crosslinked poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and homopolyguluronic acid (GG) and homopolymannuronic acid (MM) fractions of alginic acid were synthesized. MM and GG block fractions were obtained by partial acid hydrolysis of the alkaline extract from the brown seaweed Macrocystis pyrifera. The conjugation of these block fractions with the synthetic polymer was achieved by amidation with crosslinked PNIPAAm functionalized with an amino group at the end of the polymer chain. The structure of conjugates was determined by Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy of the graft copolymer GG‐g‐PNIPAAm showed a regular porous pattern, whereas the MM‐g‐PNIPAAm graft copolymer showed a regular netlike structure. Aqueous solutions of the synthesized graft copolymers afforded hydrogels by stirring with 0.1M CaCl2. The hydrogels showed a well‐defined stimulus–response to temperature and pH. The swelling, thermal, and pH characterizations demonstrated the superior properties of the GG‐g‐PNIPAAm hydrogel over the MM‐g‐PNIPAAm hydrogel. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. There are practical situations in which the quality of a process or product can be better characterized by a functional relationship between a response variable and one or more explanatory variables, which is called profile. Such profiles frequently can be represented adequately using linear or nonlinear models. While there are several studies in monitoring profiles, there are few studies to evaluate the capability of a process with profile quality characteristic; specifically, there is no method in the literature to analyze process capability characterized by nonlinear profiles. In this paper, we propose two methods to measure the capability of these processes, based on the concept of functional depth. These methods do not have distributional assumptions and extend to functional data the Process Capability Indexes proposed by Clements 1 to measure the capability of a process characterized by a random variable. The paper deals with theoretical and experimental aspects of lumped capacitance model (LCM) application for the study of heat transport in different materials. Patented construction of the measuring chamber together with special software the fundamental features of which are presented here allows evaluating thermal conductivity k, specific heat capacity cp and thermal diffusivity α. A formulation for the coupled analysis of thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) problems in joints is first presented. The work involves the establishment of equilibrium and mass and energy balance equations. Balance equations were formulated taking into account two phases: water and air. The joint element developed was implemented in a general purpose finite element computer code for THM analysis of porous media (Code_Bright). The program was then used to study a number of cases ranging from laboratory tests to large scale in situ tests. A numerical simulation of coupled hydraulic shear tests of rough granite joints is first presented. The tests as well as the model show the coupling between permeability and the deformation of the joints. The experimental investigation was focused on the effects of suction on the mechanical behaviour of rock joints. Laboratory tests were performed in a direct shear cell equipped with suction control. Suction was imposed using a vapour forced convection circuit connected to the cell and controlled by an air pump. Artificial joints of Lilla claystone were prepared. Joint roughness of varying intensity was created by carving the surfaces in contact in such a manner that rock ridges of different tip angles were formed. These angles ranged from 0° (smooth joint) to 45° (very rough joint profile). The geometric profiles of the two surfaces in contact were initially positioned in a “matching” situation. Several tests were performed for different values of suctions (200, 100, and 20 MPa) and for different values of vertical stresses (30, 60, and 150 kPa). A constitutive model including the effects of suction and joint roughness is proposed to simulate the unsaturated behaviour of rock joints. The new constitutive law was incorporated in the code and experimental results were numerically simulated.  相似文献

The most common practice for disposal of dead bodies is inhumation in soil, which favours interactions with the surrounding environment and returns nutrients to the life cycle. However, when the burial ground is located where hydrogeological, geological and climatic conditions are not favourable to the process, contamination of soils and groundwater may occur, and decomposition may be inhibited, leading to social, economic and political problems. The most critical parameters when assessing the pollution potential of a burial ground are inhumation depth, geological formation, depth of the water table, density of inhumations, soil type and climate. Considering that, this paper presents an overview of the potential threat that cemeteries can pose, analysing and discussing the influence of the main variables causing environmental impacts and public health risks.  相似文献
