Neuropsychological indexes of a partial frontal syndrome in patients with nonfrontal gliomas.

33 brain tumor patients (aged 26–74 yrs) were investigated with quantitative and qualitative neuropsychological assessments, systematic behavioral observations, and recordings of regional cerebral blood (rCBF). Ss with supratentorial highly malignant gliomas showed severe disturbances of attention, lack of control over premotor and executive functions, distractibility, a deficient abstract attitude, a loss of speech initiative, and diminished speech production. Such impairments are associated with functions of the frontal lobe system and may be related to frontal functional cortical changes as mirrored by rCBF. Signs of frontal dysfunction were seen in Ss with nonfrontal tumors and may suggest frontal lobe diaschisis in patients with Grade III–IV astrocytomas. Infrared detection of polymers in gel permeation chromatography

A gel permeation chromatograph equipped with an on-line Grubb-Parsons infrared spectrometer is described. The versatility, specificity, sensitivity, and limitations of such an infrared detector are discussed with particular reference to spectrometer specification, eluent absorbance, and solute absorbance. A stable baseline is produced when this detector is operated at high temperatures, e.g., for the separation of polyethylene in o-dichlorobenzene at 135°C. Individual functional groups in a chemically inhomogeneous solute, such as a copolymer, may be monitored by repeated injections of the solute, changing the wavelength setting between separations. This procedure is illustrated with AB poly(styrene-b-t-butyl methacrylate) block copolymer in trichloroethylene at 35°C.

Urinary testosterone and epitestosterone were assayed in 60 men: 7 normals and 53 patients with chronic prostatitis (of these 8 patients had prostatis free of complications, 45 had prostatitis with disturbances of generative and copulative functions). In 73.1% of patients considerable reduction of testosterone excretion was revealed. Reduction of testicular endocrine function is in direct correlative dependence on severity of clinical symptoms, duration of disease and form of chronic prostatis. Disturbances of genital hormone metabolism are of considerable importance in case of chronic prostatitis and its complications.     

Seasonal and spatial relationship of chemistry and toxicity in atmospheric particulate matter using aquatic bioassays

In light of current interest in better understanding the environmental impact of atmospheric particulate matter (PM), a new strategy has been employed to screen the relative toxicities of ambient and source aerosols. Short-term and acute aquatic bioassays using Ceriodaphnia dubia and a green alga (Selenastrum capricornutum) as test organisms have been in use for many years in the regulation of wastewater effluents. These tests have been employed in the present study to compare the toxicity of water extracts of atmospheric particulate matter and dichloromethane (DCM) extracts that have been transferred to dimethyl sulfoxide and diluted in water. Atmospheric PM was collected at four sites located near the south shore of Lake Michigan and one site in Michigan's Upper Peninsula at discrete events during three seasons. Parallel chemical analyses of the two extracts directly assessed the relation between the chemical composition and the toxicity of the extract. Inductively coupled plasma analysis of the metals in the water extract and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy of the organics in the DCM extract showed a relationship between high toxicity and high water-soluble copper concentration and high secondary organic aerosol tracers in the extracted aerosol. Although previous fractionation studies have not looked at water-soluble copper, significant toxicity has been measured in the semipolar and polar organic fractions of ambient aerosols and diesel exhaust particles, which are the fractions in which secondary organic aerosol components would be expected. For the water extracts, the summer samples were consistently more toxic than the autumn or spring samples. There was not a seasonal pattern for the toxicity of the DCM extracts; however, spatial differences were apparent. The toxicity end points of select samples from one site qualitatively correlate with the high polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations. Additionally, high toxicity in the July DCM extracts from another site may be tied to the presence of the insecticide carbaril. The seasonal and spatial variations captured in the toxicity results in this study tend to qualitatively correlate with trace organic components and metals and not bulk particulate matter composition.     

Developing an interview guide to evaluate practice-based evidence in nutrition: use of the delphi technique

An interview guide was created for qualitative evaluation of the impact of Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition (PEN) on dietetic practice, and its success as a medium for knowledge translation and transfer (KTT). The Delphi technique was used to bring together a diverse group of experts (n=7) with extensive knowledge in KTT and evidence-based practice (EBP); these experts developed the interview guide content. The technique is an effective means of gathering expert input to inform evaluation tool development, particularly in the absence of accepted evaluation guidelines or pre-existing evaluation tools. Although challenges exist with the Delphi technique, it is an adaptable method that can be modified to meet a variety of needs. During this project, the technique was modified to meet specific needs, including participants' partial anonymity and starting material to reduce the number of required rounds. The resulting interview guide contained open-ended questions focused on respondents' understanding of EBP and PEN, use of PEN by dietitians in other disciplines, perceptions of the quality/usefulness of PEN, and barriers to and facilitators of PEN use.
