For telemedicine to reach its potential in the Internet2 environment,significant progress must be made in a number of areas. The emergingtelecommunications will include the Internet2 between medicalinstitutions and emerging broadband loop and wireless technologiesfor interconnections to homes. Within the technical environment,problems that must be addressed include the development of robotic-controlled,remote-monitoring devices unique to the various medical specialties;the encoding, transmission, and decoding of raw data specificto the specialized needs of various medical application areas;and the reduction of data for storage and retrieval in patientrecords. Institutionally, human factor and information accessissues with respect to physicians, patients, and non-physicianhealthcare providers must be addressed; healthcare insuranceprovider policies, government regulation, and state licensinglaws must be adapted for a new paradigm of healthcare delivery;and the philosophy of capital investment for the delivery ofhealthcare must be revised.Many current practiceswill be supplanted by home healthcare alternatives, the use ofpatient-initiated preventive healthcare initiatives, and remote-clinicactivity. Bioactivity and magnetic properties were investigated in glass and glass ceramics based on the SiO2–Na2O–Fe2O3–CaO–P2O5–B2O3 system to find their suitability as thermoseed for hyperthermia treatment of cancer. The effect of change in compositions on bioactivity was examined in simulated body fluids. The glass ceramic samples exhibit Na3CaSi3O8 and Na3-XFeXPO4 phases. After dipping the glass ceramic samples in simulated body fluids silica hydrogel first forms, followed by an amorphous calcium phosphate layer. Magnetic and microwave resonance experiments further demonstrate the potential of these glass ceramics for possible use in hyperthermia. 相似文献

The electromechanical coupling coefficient represents a useful figure-of-merit for comparing the quality of different electroactive materials. However, the coupling coefficient for an electrostrictive ceramic is not a unique material parameter, because it depends strongly on the applied DC bias field, AC field amplitude and frequency, and stress. These dependencies make direct comparison between electrostrictors and piezoelectrics somewhat ambiguous. In this paper, we developed a pair of coupling parameters for electrostrictors that were strictly material constants and completely characterized the material's electromechanical quality. We proposed relatively simple, inexpensive resonance testing to measure these new parameters from the electrical admittance of a vibrating electrostrictive rod. The electromechanical coupling coefficient for a specific loading condition is computed from these parameters, allowing direct comparison between electrostrictive and piezoelectric materials. 相似文献

The two glycosylated N- and C-terminal lobes of buffalo lactoferrin have been produced by limited proteolysis using proteinase K. Lactoferrin is a single chain glycoprotein of molecular mass 80 kDa with two iron-binding sites and two structural lobes connected by a short peptide. Purified samples of lactoferrin, isolated from buffalo colostrum, were subjected to hydrolysis using trypsin, chymotrypsin, pepsin, subtilisin and proteinase K. The first three proteinases produced two major fragments of approximately 35 and 23 kDa together with small molecular mass peptides. Trypsin and chymotrypsin partly digested lactoferrin, while pepsin converted all the intact lactoferrin into fragments. Subtilisin hydrolysis produced fragments of 40 and 26 kDa together with low molecular mass peptides. However, SDS-PAGE of the proteinase K hydrolysis product gave a clear band at 40 kDa together with a band indicating a substantial quantity of low molecular mass peptides (< 14.4 kDa). Upon ion-exchange chromatography this product gave two major fractions, which were further purified by gel filtration and identified as the C and N lobes from their N-terminal sequences. Thus, the 40 kDa band in SDS-PAGE of the proteinase K hydrolysis product contained two fragments of equal molecular mass. On further hydrolysis with proteinase K, the N lobe was completely hydrolysed into low molecular mass peptides, while only a small fraction of the C lobe was converted into small products. This suggested that an inhibitory fragment was present in the C lobe that was released on hydrolysis to small fragments and prevented complete digestion of the C lobe by high-affinity binding to the active site of proteinase K. This fragment was isolated from the lactoferrin-proteinase K complex and its sequence determined to be Val-Ala-Gln-Gly-Gly-Ala-Ala-Gly-Leu-Ala. Circular dichroism studies indicated a high alpha-helical content in the native lactoferrin while comparatively lower helical structures were present in the N and C lobes. Laser-induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS) has been used to detect atomic and molecular species in various environments. LIBS has the capability to be used as a continuous-emission monitor to monitor toxic-metal concentrations in stack emissions. Recently a mobile LIBS system was calibrated in our laboratory and tested as a multimetal continuous-emission monitor during a joint U.S. Department of Energy-Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) test. LIBS measurements were performed with three sets of metal concentrations at the EPA Rotary Kiln Incinerator Simulator. The LIBS system successfully measured concentrations of Cr, Pb, Cd, and Be in near real time in this test. Real-time LIBS data were averaged and compared with data obtained from an EPA reference method that was conducted concurrently with LIBS. The details of the LIBS calibration and results of these LIBS measurements are described. 相似文献

Laser photofragmentation (PF) and subsequent nitric oxide (NO) laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) have been developed to measure the concentration of energetic materials (EM's), such as 2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), in soil and other media. Gas-phase EM's photodissociate, releasing NO(2), when exposed to laser radiation near 226 nm. Laser-excited NO(2) predissociates to form NO that gives an intense fluorescence when excited near 226 nm. The EM concentration is inferred from the intensity of the NO fluorescence. A PF-LIF laser-based sensor is being developed to be used with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Waterways Experiment Station's cone penetrometer to measure in situ the concentration of subsurface TNT. Several factors that affect the PF-LIF signal waveforms, such as sample temperature, laser power, and heating time, were investigated. Also, effects on the PF-LIF signal of adding water and fertilizer to the TNT mixtures were studied. Decay times were determined by least-squares fitting of the exponential PF-LIF signal waveforms. The use of PF-LIF waveforms promises to enable diagnostics of the sample's characteristics that would otherwise not be possible in situ. 相似文献

Water stress during the reproductive phase, especially during seed development, is considered detrimental for chickpea yield. In the present study, the relative sensitivity of Desi and Kabuli chickpea types to water stress during seed filling was assessed in terms of effects on quantitative and qualitative aspects of seed yield. Leaves of both types experienced stress injury (evaluated as electrolyte leakage) to the same extent and possessed almost similar values of water potential at the end of 14 days of water stress. The stressed plants of Kabuli type lost more chlorophyll and had less photosynthesis than Desi type. At maturity, Desi type showed more diminution of vegetative dry matter due to stress over control than Kabuli type. On the other hand, Kabuli type showed a proportionally greater reduction in seed weight per plant, average seed weight, average seed size, number of pods (single‐ and double‐seeded) and harvest index. The stressed seeds of Kabuli type showed 48 and 46% reduction over control in starch and protein content compared with 25 and 40%, respectively in Desi type. The accumulation of soluble sugars was relatively greater due to stress in Kabuli (47%) than Desi type (23%). Fat and fiber content declined by 39 and 35% over control in Desi seeds because of stress whereas Kabuli type showed 46 and 67% decreases, respectively. Protein fractions, namely albumins, globulins, glutelins and prolamins, decreased in stressed seeds of Kabuli by 32, 40, 16 and 15% over control relative to 40, 48, 30 and 28%, respectively, in Kabuli type. The activities of sucrose synthase, invertase and soluble starch synthase were inhibited to a higher extent in Kabuli seeds than Desi seeds under stress. Kabuli seeds showed significantly more reduction in the accumulation of amino acids such as phenylalanine + tyrosine, tryptophan, valine, alanine and histidine and minerals (Ca, P, Fe) due to stress compared with Desi type. Imparting molecular recognition to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by conjugating them with bio-molecules has been an area of great interest as the resulting highly functionalized CNT-bioconjugates find their applications in various fields like molecular level electronics, pharmaceuticals, drug delivery, novel materials and many others. In this work we demonstrate the synthesis of functionally engineered single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)-peptide nucleic acid (PNA) conjugates especially for nanoelectronic applications. Here we exploited the exceptional structural and chemical advantages of PNA (an artificial analogue of DNA) to join SWNTs ropes. SWNT-PNA-SWNT conjugates were synthesized using carbodiimide coupling chemistry and characterized by host of techniques like scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results from different techniques confirm the formation of these conjugates. Theoretical analysis of molecular orbitals obtained by quantum mechanical simulations show that the highest occupied molecular orbital is located on the glutamate linker and that this interface state will align closely to the valence band of the extended SWNT facilitating charge transfer. The unique electrical and structural properties of these conjugates make them a potential candidate for application in CNT based nanodevices. 相似文献

The piezoelectric effect is investigated for the first time in renal calculi in vitro. The kidney stones are shaped from solid samples as well as from stones crushed into powder and pressed into tablets. Presence of alpha quartz in the renal calculi is investigated by an X-ray technique and the presence of this constituent also helps to explain the piezoelectric effect in the renal calculi.
