A 23-year-old road built with MSWI residue (mix of fly and bottom ashes) was investigated through the environmental assessment of the residue, soils (adjacent to and underlying the road) and seepage waters. The pH and ANC4.3 of the material indicate a low carbonation and a high alkaline stock. The material leaches few trace elements. The underlying road soil shows significant effects with respect to K and Na, attributable to the MSWI residue. Effects regarding Cd, Cr, Cu and Ni are observed, yet pollution thresholds are not exceeded. Compared to groundwater thresholds, the MSWI residue percolate is of poor to very poor quality (French reference system — FWQAS) in terms of pH, K, Na, Cl, F, As and Cu. It lies above the intervention values of the Dutch Soil Protection Act (DSPA) for Cu, Ni and Pb. Downstream, water from the road shoulder (WSdr) is of very poor quality with respect to Na and Cl, and fair to poor quality regarding K. All other parameters comply with the best quality thresholds (FWQAS and DSPA). The high Cl concentration of WSdr would not fit for direct discharge in any watercourse. Toward a weakly-mineralised water, Cd and Cu would also be penalizing. The geometry of the road site creates penalizing conditions increasing the washing of the MSWI residue. The road structure does not cause downstream effect as regards trace elements, but effects exist for Cl, Na and K. Opposite downstream effects are observed (Ca, Mg, Mn and SO42−) due to farming treatments and the nature of the local soil.  相似文献

The measurement of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) mass for particles emitted by diesel vehicles is currently accomplished using particle collection on filters, followed by analysis using the thermal/optical reflectance carbon analysis method (TOR) or one of its variations. Such filter methods limit time resolution to a minimum of several minutes, making it impossible to study emissions during transient operating conditions. Testing of five different measurement methods has demonstrated that fast response measurement of diesel exhaust particulate EC and OC concentrations, consistent with TOR filter measurements, is feasible using existing technology. EC mass concentrations are best measured through determination of particulate light absorption with a photoacoustic instrument or determination of light extinction with a smoke meter. The photoacoustic instrument has the better dynamic range and sensitivity, whereas the smoke meter is a simpler instrument. Fast response OC measurements cannot be made with any single instrument tested. However, a combination of real time weighing as implemented in the tapered element oscillating microbalance with the photoacoustic instrument has been shown to be capable of determining OC concentrations with good time response. The addition of a nephelometer to the OC measurement could potentially improve time resolution, freedom from interferences, and sensitivity.  相似文献

Adipose tissue, the logical target component in weight reduction regimens, was measured in five obese subjects during weight reduction, and in four normal weight controls. The two compartment model of Ljunggren, consisting of adipose tissue (AT) and adipose tissue-free mass (AFM), was further developed by finding experimental values for total water, extracellular water (ECW), lipid, and cell solids in 16 biopsied subjects. The AFM was estimated from body potassium content (40K counting) by use of an age/sex specific constant for the K content in the fat free body. Five obese subjects maintained for 46 days on regimens averaging 800 kcal/day had initial AT from 48% to 60% of body weight compared with AT 27% to 46% in four normal controls. Weight reductions averaged 17.4 kg (12% of initial weight), with approximately equal reductions in adipose tissue, adipose-free mass, and water. Initial fluid compartment ratios in the obese were unusually high (ECW:ICW in AFM was 0.74 +/- 0.23 [S.D.] compared with 0.42 +/- 0.05 in normals); these values returned toward normal (to 0.59 +/- 0.06) with weight reduction. The fact that it was possible to disclose a hitherto unappreciated abnormality of hydration in the adipose-free mass of obese subjects and its change toward normal with weight reduction, suggests that the adipose:adipose-free model may have a special utility when body composition measurements are used to monitor the effects of weight reduction regimens on various body constituents.  相似文献

The DNA sequence of five contiguous open reading frames encoding enzymes for phenazine biosynthesis in the biological control bacterium. Pseudomonas aureofaciens 30-84 was determined. These open reading frames were named phzF, phzA, phzB, phzC and phzD. Protein PhzF is similar to 3-deoxy-D-arabino-heptulosonate-7-phosphate synthases of solanaceous plants. PhzA is similar to 2,3-dihydro-2,3-dihydroxybenzoate synthase (EntB) of Escherichia coli. PhzB shares similarity with both subunits of anthranilate synthase and the phzB open reading frame complemented an E. coli trpE mutant deficient in anthranilate synthase activity. Although phzC shares little similarity to known genes, its product is responsible for the conversion of phenazine-I-carboxylic acid to 2-hydroxy-phenazine-I-carboxylic acid. PhzD is similar to pyridoxamine phosphate oxidases. These results indicate that phenazine biosynthesis in P. aureofaciens shares similarities with the shikimic acid, enterochelin, and tryptophan biosynthetic pathways.  相似文献

Cryptosporidium parvum has historically been associated with waterborne outbreaks of diarrheal illness. Foodborne cryptosporidiosis has been associated with unpasteurized apple cider. Infectious oocysts are shed in the feces of common ruminants like cattle and deer in and near orchards. In this study, the ability of organic acids and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) added to fruit juice to inhibit the survival of C. parvum was analyzed. Oocyst viability was analyzed by a cell culture infectivity assay with the use of a human ileocecal cell line (HCT-8) whose infectivity pattern is similar to that for human oral infectivity. Cell monolayers were infected with 10(6) treated oocysts or a series of 10-fold dilutions. Parasitic life stages were visualized through immunohistochemistry with 100 microscope fields per monolayer being counted. In vitro excystation assays were also used to evaluate these treatments. Organic acids and H2O2 were added to apple cider, orange juice, and grape juices on a weight/volume basis. Malic, citric, and tartaric acids at concentrations of 1 to 5% inhibited C. parvum's infectivity of HCT-8 cells by up to 88%. Concentrations ranging from 0.025 to 3% H2O2 were evaluated. The addition of 0.025% H2O2 to each juice resulted in a >5-log reduction of C. parvum infectivity as determined with a most-probable-number-based cell culture infectivity assay. As observed with differential interference contrast and scanning electron microscopy, reduced infectivity may be mediated through effects on the oocyst wall that are caused by the action of H2O2 or related oxygen radicals. The addition of low concentrations of H2O2 can represent a valuable alternative to pasteurization.  相似文献

Used a modified conditioned-suppression technique to train 6 male Sprague-Dawley rats to criterion discrimination of amyl acetate at 10-2.0 of vapor saturation. The magnitude of suppression was also recorded as a function of concentration and amyl acetate, with the concentrations presented by the method of constant stimuli. Amyl acetate thresholds were 10-5.50, 10-5.25, 10-5.70, 10-5.75, 10-5.90, and 10-5.80 of vapor saturation for the Ss. Mean thresholds for butyl, amyl, hexyl, and heptyl acetates were also determined. An independent measurement of the amyl acetate concentrations determined by the olfactometer was made with gas-liquid chromatography. A high-speed variable modulus prescaler that divides the input clock frequency by 128 up to 255 with unit step increment has been implemented with heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) technology. A maximum operating frequency of 9.72 GHz with power consumption of 650 mW has been measured. The high-speed performance is attributed to the circuit design, which minimizes the critical path delay, and the intrinsic high-speed characteristics of HBT technology. The phase noise of the prescaler is important for frequency synthesizer applications. With 6.24-GHz input frequency, the phase noise was -110 dBc/Hz at 100-Hz offset frequency and -120 dBc at 1-kHz offset frequency. The noise floor decreases as the input frequency decreases. Phase noises of -125 dBc/Hz at 100-Hz offset and -135 dBc/Hz at 1-kHz offset were obtained for a 1.2-GHz input frequency  相似文献
