Doctors read literature to keep abreast of medical advances. A recommendation from the 1993 World Summit for Medical Education is that medical schools should teach medical students to critically appraise scientific reports. The Department of Community Health Sciences of Aga Khan University Medical College teaches basic research methods to medical students. This is now supplemented with "Critical Reading". Critical reading was first taught to 67 third year students between October, 1993 and May, 1994. A "validity check-list for critical readers" was introduced in a two week orientation consisting of three one-hour classroom sessions and four one-hour small group sessions. Thereafter, small groups met monthly to critique clinical epidemiological reports relevant to current organ system teaching. The students reading attitudes and critical appraisal skills were assessed through continuous assessment and a written final examination with questionnaire. All but three students passed the final examination (mean score (74%, standard deviation 12%). Sixty-four of 67 (96%) completed questionnaires. All (73% strongly) agreed that critical reading skills were essential, but only 30% strongly agreed that they had, indeed, mastered the skills. Ninety-seven percent (56% strongly) disagreed that year three was too early to start critical reading. Clinical teaching staff expressed interest in learning these skills. Students benefited from and enjoyed this first critical reading course. It strengthened ties between clinical and community health sciences teaching staff. The critical reading skills of the clinical teaching staff is being addressed in seminars to strengthen institutional research capacity. 相似文献

The University of Sussex In-School Teacher Education Project (InSTEP) uses interactive video technologies to enhance initial teacher education programmes for science trainee teachers. With four Internet Protocol cameras and mounted microphones in both school laboratories and the university teaching room, trainees and their tutors have access to live interaction with schools. This paper presents some of the findings of a 2 year evaluation of InSTEP aimed at identifying the benefits for trainee teachers. There has been an increase in the use of video material for teacher training purposes, however, trainee teachers are often intimidated by carefully selected extracts featuring experienced teachers. InSTEP activities are live and capitalise on all the opportunities associated with normal classroom practice. Literature points to InSTEP-type activities having the potential to enhance the development of trainees’ observation skills, develop reflective thinking, to provide authentic illustrations of classroom practice, enable remote observation and facilitate the coaching of trainees by mentors. A fourth generation model of evaluation was undertaken with data generated by semi-structured interviews with university tutors and mentors supported by a questionnaire and group interviews with the trainees. Our main findings point to InSTEP enhancing and accelerating the growth of trainee teachers’ professional knowledge through enabling reflective practice, facilitating collaborative learning and supporting the development of the language of pedagogy. 相似文献

Using virtual reality (VR) to examine risky behavior that is mediated by interpersonal contact, such as agreeing to have sex,
drink, or smoke with someone, offers particular promise and challenges. Social contextual stimuli that might trigger impulsive
responses can be carefully controlled in virtual environments (VE), and yet manipulations of risk might be implausible to
participants if they do not feel sufficiently immersed in the environment. The current study examined whether individuals
can display adequate evidence of presence in a VE that involved potential interpersonally-induced risk: meeting a potential
dating partner. Results offered some evidence for the potential of VR for the study of such interpersonal risk situations.
Participants’ reaction to the scenario and risk-associated responses to the situation suggested that the embodied nature of
virtual reality override the reality of the risk’s impossibility, allowing participants to experience adequate situational

Proteomics has long been thought to hold the promise of producing results of clinical utility which will influence patient treatment and outcomes. A recent Wellcome Trust/EBI meeting and retreat--“Perspectives in Clinical Proteomics”--brought together experts from a broad range of stakeholder groups with an interest in ensuring proteomics achieves this aim. This viewpoint presents views derived from these forums, proposing a pathway for the development of next-generation proteomic analyses in the clinical setting from selection of candidates through to their validation and ultimate demonstration of utility through health technology assessments. Hurricanes and tropical storms are severe threats to coastal properties, settlements, and infrastructure. Airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) surveys conducted before and after storm events allow detailed analysis of coastal geomorphologic and sediment volumetric changes and have been proved very useful in the study of coastal changes. Traditionally, most studies use the pixel-based differencing method to quantify the spatial extent and magnitude of coastal changes based on sequential lidar surveys. This research presents a graph theory-based approach and associated software tools for representing and quantifying storm-induced damages to buildings, beaches and sand dunes, coastal vegetation canopy, and infrastructure. Generation of elevation difference grids, construction of local contour trees, and derivation of semantic properties are key components of the new algorithm for change object detection and extraction. An ontology and taxonomy are proposed to classify change objects into different types of coastal damages in terms of their semantic properties. This method has been successfully applied to assess damages of Hurricane Ike to the Bolivar Peninsula on the Texas Gulf Coast based on pre- and post-storm airborne lidar data and colour infrared aerial photographs. 相似文献

We investigate the applicability of some novel spatial analysis techniques, developed for studies of astrophysical datasets, to the analysis of spatial point data in sedimentary basins. The techniques are evaluated and compared with standard methods using two test areas that contain large numbers of submarine pockmarks developed in distributed arrays. The familiar Ripley K and Voronoi tesselation techniques are used, and the results are then compared with those obtained using more novel techniques, the correlation length and minimal spanning tree. The correlation length technique is found to identify the precise distances at which clustering occurs more accurately, making a physical interpretation more clear than is possible using the Ripley K. The minimal spanning tree is found to be powerful at identifying the space-filling nature of the pockmark distribution, and has the advantage of being immune to edge effects. The use of these two novel techniques permits more information to be extracted from the datasets, and demonstrates clear statistically significant differences between them, which are not detectable using standard techniques. 相似文献

We propose a robust Poisson geometric process model with heavy-tailed distributions to cope with the problem of outliers as it may lead to an overestimation of mean and variance resulting in inaccurate interpretations of the situations. Two heavy-tailed distributions namely Student’s t and exponential power distributions with different tailednesses and kurtoses are used and they are represented in scale mixture of normal and scale mixture of uniform respectively. The proposed model is capable of describing the trend and meanwhile the mixing parameters in the scale mixture representations can detect the outlying observations. Systems biologists use interaction graphs to model the behavior of biological systems at the molecular level. In an iterative process, such biologists obser ve the reactions of living cells under various experimental conditions, view the results in the context of the interaction graph, and then propose changes to the graph model. These graphs ser ve as a form of dynamic knowledge representation of the biological system being studied and evolve as new insight is gained from the experimental data. While numerous graph layout and drawing packages are available, these tools did not fully meet the needs of our immunologist collaborators. In this paper, we describe the data information display needs of these immunologists and translate them into design decisions. These decisions led us to create Cerebral, a system that uses a biologically guided graph layout and incor porates experimental data directly into the graph display. Small multiple views of different experimental conditions and a data-driven parallel coordinates view enable correlations between experimental conditions to be analyzed at the same time that the data is viewed in the graph context. This combination of coordinated views allows the biologist to view the data from many different perspectives simultaneously. To illustrate the typical analysis tasks performed, we analyze two datasets using Cerebral. Based on feedback from our collaboratorsweconcludethat Cerebral is a valuable tool for analyzing experimental data in the context of an interaction graph model.
