Structure and Magnetic Properties of Ce-Substituted Yttrium Iron Garnet Prepared by Conventional Sintering Techniques

Y_3?xCe _x Fe₅ O ₁₂ (CeYIG) ceramics, with x = 0, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35, 0.45, and 0.5, were fabricated by a conventional ceramic sintering technique. We studied the structures and magnetic fields of a series of CeYIG ceramics using X-ray powder diffraction, a scanning electron microscope, and a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer. Findings showed that the substitution limit of the concentration of Ce³⁺ ions in the yttrium iron garnet structure was approximately x = 0.25. An extra CeO₂ phase was detected in the ceramic when the addition of CeO₂ content overtook the limit. The lattice constants and relative densities increased by increasing the Ce³⁺ contents in the ceramics. First, the saturation magnetization increased gradually with increases in the substitute concentration of Ce³⁺ ions and then decreased gradually when x = 0.35, 0.45, and 0.5. Overall, this study showed that the Y_3?xCe _x Fe₅ O ₁₂ material with x ≤ 0.15 exhibited excellent magnetic properties. Hence, the material show promise for magneto-optical and microwave communication applications.     

Crystal structure of Cr4AlB4: A new MAB phase compound discovered in Cr-Al-B system

In this communication, the crystal structure of Cr_4AlB_4, a new MAB phase compound(where M is a transition metal, A is Al or Si, B is boron) discovered in Cr-Al-B system is reported. This new MAB phase was synthesized from a mixture of CrB and Al powders at 1000?C and its crystal structure was determined by a combination of X-ray diffraction, first-principles calculations and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS). Cr_4AlB_4 crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with Immm space group. The lattice constants are a = 2.9343(6) ?, b = 18.8911(0) ?, c = 2.9733(7) ?, and the atomic positions are Cr1 at 4 g(0, 0.2936(5),0), Cr2 at 4 h(0.5, 0.5859(7), 0), Al at 2 b(0, 0.5, 0.5), B1 at 4 h(0, 0.3839(8), 0.5) and B2 at 4 g(0.5, 0.6646(2),0.5).

The effect of curing on the crystallization of poly(phenylene sulfide)

Summary Poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) was cured in the melt and solid states under air and/or nitrogen environments. Crystallization behavior of such cured materials as a function of cure time at 320°C and 255°C was studied via differential scanning calorimetry. It was found, on general, that while short-time curing leads to an increase in crystallization rate, prolonged curing leads to a decrease in both crystallinity and crystallization rate. In contrast to the enhanced crystallization rate caused by curing in nitrogen at the melt state, no significant change of crystallization rate is observed while curing is done in the solid state (in nitrogen).
