Sensation seeking (SS) has traditionally been viewed as a phenomenon of the appetitive motivational system. The limited SS research exploring contributions from the aversive motivational system reveals greater anxious reactivity to dangerous activities among low sensation seekers. The present study extends this line of work by comparing levels of fear and anxiety during anticipation of predictable and unpredictable aversive stimuli across high- and low-SS groups. Low sensation seekers displayed greater fear-potentiated startle (FPS) to predictable aversive stimuli, and only those low on SS showed FPS and skin conductance response effects during experimental contexts in which aversive stimuli were delivered unpredictably. Findings implicate enhanced apprehensive anticipation among those low on SS as a potential deterrent for their participation in intense and threatening stimulus events. BACKGROUND: Psychological manipulations (supplied information, safety cues) may influence panic rates during pharmacologic challenge tests in subjects with panic disorder (PD). Psychological panic models assume that fear of stress-related bodily sensations is central to the etiology of PD. METHODS: Prior to infusion of epinephrine, 50 subjects with PD were randomly assigned to one out of four experimental conditions: with or without extensive information and with or without external control, according to a 2 x 2 design. The panic rate was hypothesized to be lower in subgroups possessing extensive information and/or control. Fear of bodily sensations was used as a predictor. RESULTS: Thirty-four out of 50 patients (68%) panicked during the infusion. Subjects who received extensive information were marginally less likely to panic, but manipulation of control did not influence panic rates. Panickers did not differ from nonpanickers in measures of fear of fear. Anxiety sensitivity best predicted baseline anxiety and cognitive symptom scores, but was not associated with other outcome measures in panickers. Only baseline partial pressure of CO2 discriminated between panickers and nonpanickers. CONCLUSIONS: Manipulating external safety cues appears to be of limited value in modulating responses to epinephrine challenge. Together with our finding that fear of anxiety symptoms does not predict panic rates, these data argue against "fear of fear" as a key mechanism in epinephrine-induced panic.  相似文献

The article is devoted to the local application of high energy plasma flows in the complex treatment of wounds and wound complications. The new technology of physical action upon the biological tissues allows performing dissections, evaporation and carrying on local hemostasis and sterilization of the wound surface simultaneously. The shortening of the first phase of the wound healing process and earlier development of the second phase are due to the "biophysical isolation" of the wound surface by the thermal necrosis layer from unfavorable effects of the external medium. The healing goes on by the type of productive inflammation. The use of plasma flows during surgical treatment of purulent wounds reduces pains during the postoperative period and considerably improves results of the treatment.  相似文献

We consider the schedulability of a set of independent periodic tasks under fixed priority preemptive scheduling on homogeneous multiprocessor systems. Assuming there is no task migration between processors and each processor schedules tasks preemptively according to fixed priorities assigned by the Rate Monotonic policy, the scheduling problem reduces to assigning the set of tasks to disjoint processors in such a way that the Monotonic policy, the scheduling problem reduces to assigning the set of tasks to disjoint processors in such a way that the schedulability of the tasks on each processor can be guaranteed. In this paper we show that the worst case achievable utilization for such systems is between n(21/2-1) and (n+1)/(1+21/(n+1)), where n stands for the number of processors. The lower bound represents 41 percent of the total system capacity and the upper bound represents 50 to 66 percent depending on n. Practicality of the lower bound is demonstrated by proving it can be achieved using a First Fit scheduling algorithm.  相似文献

There is little in vitro data available on long-term effects of TiO2 exposure. Such data are important for improving the understanding of underlying mechanisms of adverse health effects of TiO2. Here, we exposed pulmonary epithelial cells to two doses (0.96 and 1.92 µg/cm2) of TiO2 for 13 weeks and effects on cell cycle and cell death mechanisms, i.e., apoptosis and autophagy were determined after 4, 8 and 13 weeks of exposure. Changes in telomere length, cellular protein levels and lipid classes were also analyzed at 13 weeks of exposure. We observed that the TiO2 exposure increased the fraction of cells in G1-phase and reduced the fraction of cells in G2-phase, which was accompanied by an increase in the fraction of late apoptotic/necrotic cells. This corresponded with an induced expression of key apoptotic proteins i.e., BAD and BAX, and an accumulation of several lipid classes involved in cellular stress and apoptosis. These findings were further supported by quantitative proteome profiling data showing an increase in proteins involved in cell stress and genomic maintenance pathways following TiO2 exposure. Altogether, we suggest that cell stress response and cell death pathways may be important molecular events in long-term health effects of TiO2.  相似文献

Whole genome sequences of two Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates, 48-1789 and MAR24, revealed that they carry the KL106 and KL112 capsular polysaccharide (CPS) biosynthesis gene clusters, respectively, at the chromosomal K locus. The KL106 and KL112 gene clusters are related to the previously described KL11 and KL83 gene clusters, sharing genes for the synthesis of l-rhamnose (l-Rhap) and 6-deoxy-l-talose (l-6dTalp). CPS material isolated from 48-1789 and MAR24 was studied by sugar analysis and Smith degradation along with one- and two-dimensional 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The structures of K106 and K112 oligosaccharide repeats (K units) l-6dTalp-(1→3)-D-GlcpNAc tetrasaccharide fragment share the responsible genes in the respective gene clusters. The K106 and K83 CPSs also have the same linkage between K units. The KL112 cluster includes an additional glycosyltransferase gene, Gtr183, and the K112 unit includes α l-Rhap side chain that is not found in the K106 structure. K112 further differs in the linkage between K units formed by the Wzy polymerase, and a different wzy gene is found in KL112. However, though both KL106 and KL112 share the atr8 acetyltransferase gene with KL83, only K83 is acetylated.  相似文献
