Previous research has suggested that ratings used to make administrative decisions are lenient when compared with ratings obtained for research purposes only. The present study examined the effects of the purpose of rating on multivariate measures of accuracy in observing teacher behavior as well as measures of accuracy in evaluating teaching performance. 45 undergraduates viewed and evaluated videotaped lectures under conditions in which they were informed that their ratings would be used for research only or for making important decisions about those being rated. The purpose of rating did not affect measures of accuracy in rating the frequency with which a number of critical behaviors occurred on each tape. The purpose of rating also did not affect multivariate measures of performance rating accuracy. Purpose did, however, affect the relationship between accuracy in observing teacher behavior and accuracy in evaluating teaching performance. It is suggested that purpose affects the way in which raters process behavioral information without necessarily affecting the general level of rating. OBJECTIVES: Several studies have noted the impact of socioeconomic factors on access to expensive medical care, but none of those studies controlled for self-reported health and functional status or attitudes about treatment alternatives when analyses were completed. Because these factors may be correlated with socioeconomic status, the failure to control for them may have led to bias in other studies. The authors merged data from secondary sources with telephone survey data from a national sample of 456 end-stage renal disease patients to show how estimates of the effects of socioeconomic factors change when self-reported health and functional status and attitudes about treatment are incorporated into statistical models. The authors also showed how kidney transplant rates would change if socioeconomic factors no longer influences organ allocation decisions. METHODS: Weibull proportional hazard analyses were used to show relationships between socioeconomic measures and waiting list entry and kidney transplant rates, before versus after accounting for self-reported health and functional status, attitudes about treatment, and other variables. Simulation analyses were used to estimate the number of waiting list spots and transplant operations that would move from economically advantaged to disadvantaged persons if socioeconomics no longer influenced organ allocation decisions. RESULTS: Incorporating information about health and functional status, attitudes about treatment, and other factors into the hazard models often reduced the estimated impact of socioeconomic measures on the odds of (1) being on a waiting list for a cadaver kidney transplant and (2) receiving a transplant. Simulations showed that 30 to 65 waiting list spots or transplant operations per 1,000 patients would shift from economically advantaged to disadvantaged persons if socioeconomics no longer influenced organ allocation decisions. CONCLUSIONS: Successful efforts to level the playing field would result in substantial redistributions of kidney transplants from economically advantaged to disadvantaged persons. 相似文献

TEE is an expensive but useful intraoperative diagnostic strategy for cardiac surgical procedures. It can alter surgical management with tremendous potential benefits to the patient. It also has the potential to avoid unnecessary surgery and reduce the risk of complications such as reoperation, thromboembolism, and stroke. As with any new technology, the indications for its use must be evaluated on the basis of cost, benefits, and efficacy to determine the true value and cost-effectiveness in a particular application. Based on the information presented in this report, it can be concluded that TEE is a cost-effective strategy for valvular and congenital heart repairs. Current data are very convincing that TEE has the potential to be cost-effective in reducing the risk of stroke in selected populations of cardiac surgical patients. As experience with the use of TEE in its various applications increases and the technology itself continues to improve, it will undoubtedly become a more valuable and cost-effective strategy for cardiac surgery. 相似文献

The chemical rate theory is widely used to describe the microstructural evolution in a material during irradiation. We describe recent improvements to the theory that increase its predictive capability. The incubation dose prior to the onset of void swelling is modelled by allowing partition of the gas between the various sinks in the microstructure. New dislocation and void sink strengths have been derived incorporating the field effects. These improvements to the theory have been incorporated into a new FACSIMILE computer code designated VS5. The new code has been successfully employed to model void swelling during HVM, VEC and fast reactor irradiation of 316 steel. 相似文献

Currently available data suggest that most of the energy and material consumption related to the production of an integrated circuit is due to the wafer fabrication process. The complexity of wafer manufacturing, requiring hundreds of steps that vary from product to product and from facility to facility and which change every few years, has discouraged the development of material, energy, and emission inventory modules for the purpose of insertion into life cycle assessments. To address this difficulty, a flexible, process-based system for estimating material requirements, energy requirements, and emissions in wafer fabrication has been developed. The method accounts for mass and energy use atthe unit operation level. Parametric unit operation modules have been developed that can be used to predict changes in inventory as the result of changes in product design, equipment selection, or process flow. A case study of the application of the modules is given for energy consumption, but a similar methodology can be used for materials, individually or aggregated. 相似文献

The hardness, fracture toughness, toughness, flexural strength and Youngs moduli of three acrylic tooth polymers were investigated. The first polymer was based on a conventional homopolymer poly(methylmethacrylate). The second was based on cross-linked poly(methylmethacrylate) with an uncross-linked poly(methylmethacrylate) coating. The third material was based on an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) of a cross-linked and uncross-linked poly(methylmethacrylate). All three polymers had similar hardness values. The cross-linked and IPN polymers had higher fracture toughness (KIC) and toughness (GIC) values than the conventional homopolymer poly(methylmethacrylate) polymer and lower flexural strengths (f). The toughness of the cross-linked and IPN polymers was higher due to crack deflection around the polymer bead structure and the polymer beads acting as crack pinning sites. 相似文献
