The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effect of restricting pasture access time on milk production and composition, body weight and body condition score change, dry matter intake, and grazing behavior of autumn calving dairy cows in midlactation. Fifty-two (19 primiparous and 33 multiparous) Holstein-Friesian dairy cows (mean calving date, August 17 ± 91.2 d) were randomly assigned to a 4-treatment (n = 13) randomized block design grazing study. The 4 grazing treatments were: (i) full-time access to pasture (22H; control), (ii) 9-h access to pasture (9H), (iii) two 4.5-h periods of access to pasture after both milkings (2 × 4.5H), and (iv) two 3-h periods of access to pasture after both milkings (2 × 3H). Experimental treatments were imposed from March 7 to April 6, 2007 (31 d). The pregrazing herbage mass of swards offered to all treatments was 1,268 kg of dry matter/ha, and sward organic matter digestibility was 86.4%, indicating high-quality swards conducive to high dry matter intake. Swards where animals had 22H and 2 × 4.5H access to pasture had the lowest postgrazing sward heights (3.5 cm), reflecting the greatest levels of sward utilization. After the experimental period, there were no differences in milk production; however, the 2 × 3H animals tended to have lower milk protein concentration (−0.17%) compared with 22H animals. Furthermore, dry matter intake of the 9H animals was lower than 22H animals. Although restricting access time to pasture decreased grazing time, animals compensated by increasing their intake/minute and intake/bite. Restricting pasture access time resulted in much greater grazing efficiency, because the 9H, 2 × 4.5H, and 2 × 3H treatments spent a greater proportion of their time at pasture grazing (81, 81, and 96%, respectively) than 22H animals (42%). Results of this study indicate that allocating animals restricted access to pasture does not significantly affect milk production. This study also found that the total access time should be greater than 6 h and that perhaps needs to be divided into 2 periods.  相似文献

Six rumen-cannulated Holstein cows in early lactation were assigned to 3 treatments: grazing (G), zero-grazing (ZG), and grass silage (GS) harvested from the same perennial rye grass sward in a 3 × 3 Latin square design with three 21-d periods. The objectives of this study were to investigate the underlying mechanisms for the reported elevation in milk rumenic acid (RA) concentration associated with G compared with ZG and GS, and to identify the important variables contributing to the milk RA response. Grazing animals were offered 20 kg of dry matter/cow per day; indoor animals were offered ad libitum grass or silage. A concentrate at a rate of 3 kg/d was also offered to all cows. Rumen, plasma, and milk samples were collected in the third week of each period. Data were analyzed by the MIXED procedure of SAS. Dry matter intakes were less for GS with no difference between G and ZG. Milk yield was greater for G than for ZG or GS. Milk fat and protein contents were less for GS with no difference between G and ZG. The combined intake (g/d) of linoleic and linolenic (18:3n-3) acids was different across the treatments (G: 433; ZG: 327; and GS: 164). Rumen pH was less for G with no difference between ZG and GS. Concentrations of volatile fatty acids and ammonia nitrogen in rumens were not different across the treatments. Wet rumen fill was less for G with no difference between ZG and GS. Vaccenic acid concentrations were different across the treatments in rumen (G: 12.30%, ZG: 9.31%, and GS: 4.21%); plasma (G: 2.18%, ZG: 1.47%, and GS: 0.66%) and milk (G: 4.73%, ZG: 3.49%, and GS: 0.99%). Milk RA concentrations were greater for G (2.07%) than for ZG (1.38%) and GS (0.54%). Milk desaturase index based on the ratio cis-9-14:1/14:0 was not different across the treatments. Milk RA yield per 100 g of linoleic acid and linolenic acid intake (efficiency) was 2.23, 1.50, and 0.62 g in G, ZG, and GS, respectively, suggesting that G cows were more efficient than ZG and GS cows in milk RA production. Stepwise regression analysis of a group of variables revealed that plasma vaccenic acid accounted for 95% of the variation in milk RA production. Milk desaturase index did not enter into the model. Overall findings suggest that substrate intake influenced milk RA production but it was not the only factor involved. There were differences in efficiency of milk RA production, which appears to depend on the factors regulating ruminal vaccenic acid production and its supply to the mammary tissue.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of level of 1) pregrazing herbage mass (HM) and 2) level of daily herbage allowance (DHA) on the performance and fatty acid (FA) composition of milk from grazing dairy cows. Sixty-eight Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were allocated to either a high or low pregrazing HM (1,700 vs. 2,400 kg of DM/ha; >40 mm), and within HM treatment, cows were further allocated to either a high or low DHA (16 vs. 20 kg of DM/d per cow; >40 mm) in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Pregrazing HM did not affect dry matter intake (17.5 ± 0.75 kg/d), milk production (22.1 ± 0.99 kg/d), milk composition (milk fat, 3.88 ± 0.114%; milk protein, 3.28 ± 0.051%), body weight (525 ± 16 kg), or body condition score (2.65 ± 0.064). Increasing DHA increased dry matter intake (+1.5 kg/d) but did not affect any other variable measured. Cows grazing the low HM or high DHA had a higher daily intake of total FA (+0.12 and +0.09 kg/d, respectively, for the low HM and high DHA), α-linolenic acid (LNA; +0.08 and +0.05 kg/d, respectively, for the low HM and high DHA), and linoleic acid (+0.01 for both the low HM and high DHA) compared with either the high HM or low DHA. Milk conjugated linoleic acid (cis-9, trans-11 isomer) was not affected by treatment (13.0 ± 0.77 g/kg of total FA); however, large variation was recorded between individual animals (range from 5.9 to 20.6 g/kg of total FA). Milk concentrations of LNA were higher for animals offered the low HM (5.3 g/kg of total FA), but across treatments, milk concentrations of LNA were low (4.9 ± 0.33 g/kg of total FA). The present study indicates that changes in HM and DHA do not have a great effect on the milk FA composition of grazing dairy cows. Further enhancement of the beneficial FA content in milk purely from changes in grazing strategy may be difficult when pasture quality is already high.  相似文献

The objective of these experiments was to compare 4 total mixed rations fed to USDA-certified organic dairy cows in New England. Forty-eight Jersey cows from the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and 64 Holstein cows from the University of Maine (UMaine) were assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments testing the main effects of corn silage versus grass silage as the forage base and commodity concentrates versus a complete pelleted concentrate mixture. Treatment diets were fed as a total mixed ration for 8 wk during the winter and spring months of 2007, 2008, and 2009. Milk yield, component, and quality data were recorded and used to calculate the value of the milk produced for each cow. The dry matter intake (DMI) was recorded and used to calculate the average cost per cow per day of each diet. Income over feed costs were calculated for each diet using milk value and feed cost data. Feed cost and income over feed cost data were resampled using bootstrap methodology to examine potential patterns. Milk yield, milk fat and true protein concentrations, and SCC were similar among treatments. Cows at UNH fed corn silage tended to have higher DMI and lower milk urea nitrogen than did cows fed grass silage, whereas cows fed pellets had higher DMI than cows fed commodities. Cows at UNH fed commodities tended to have higher body condition scores than those fed pellets. Cows at UMaine fed commodities tended to have higher DMI than did cows fed pellets, and cows fed corn silage had lower milk urea nitrogen than did cows fed grass silage. Body weights and body condition scores were not different for cows at UMaine. Feed costs were significantly higher for corn silage diets and diets at UNH containing pellets, but not at UMaine. The calculated value of the milk and income over feed costs did not differ among treatments at either university. Bootstrap replications indicated that the corn silage with commodities diet generally had the highest feed cost at both UNH and UMaine, whereas grass silage diets containing commodities generally had the lowest cost. In contrast, the grass silage with commodities diets had the highest income over feed cost in the majority of the replications at both UNH and UMaine replications, whereas the corn silage with commodities diets had the lowest rank. Similar results were observed when forage prices were increased or decreased by 5, 10, and 25% above or below the actual feed price. Feeding a grass silage-based diet supplemented with commodity concentrates may have an economic advantage for dairy producers in New England operating under an organic system of production.  相似文献

Teachers have been under pressure in the United Kingdom to devise pedagogic strategies to raise boys' achievement. This article reviews the emergence of the concept of a 'setting' from within the sociocultural literature as the basis for considering the interaction between gender and learning. The second section reports findings from an empirical study of two teachers in one school who taught the same creative writing activity to their classes. The strategies in each classroom to improve boys' achievement in English varied, and involved mixed, gendered seating and single sex grouping. The strategies had unintended effects in terms of how subject knowledge was realised, and therefore what was available to learn and by whom. To demonstrate and explain these effects we illustrate how hegemonic representations of gender were reconstructed in each setting and present individual cases to illustrate students' experience of the settings. How settings mediate the interrelation between gender and learning at the interpersonal plane of analysis are discussed, and the reconstruction of knowledge and social gender identities at the personal plane.  相似文献

A model warehouse with carefully regulated environmental conditions was used to study the behavior of adult Indian meal moths during commodity infestation. Sequences of moth distributions in the warehouse, calculated by spatial analysis, clearly showed the coordinated movements of moth populations from eclosion to death. Many facets of adult behavior in a warehouse were coordinated with the photoperiod. Adult moths emerged at the end of a photophase and fairly rapidly moved to the walls and, to a lesser extent, to the undersides of the commodity pallets. Most females are mated in the first 24 h after emergence, largely during the scotophase. Air circulation within the warehouse probably compromised pheromone-directed guidance of males to females, although pheromones may still have a major role in regulating other aspects of male mating behavior. When mating subsided, many of the males flew upwind to the air circulating unit, but only during the photophases. The females moved to the return air side of the warehouse and then migrated towards the same end as the males, but only during the scotophases. They moved from pallet to pallet largely by walking on the warehouse floor and laid eggs in or on the cups of commodity. Direct oviposition on the commodity during the infestation period was lower than expected, probably because commodity odors were dissipated by air circulation and did not provide appropriate orientation. At 144 h after emergence, 90% of the moth population had died.  相似文献

Absorption of niacin from the rumen was tested in vivo using a buffer solution that contained either nicotinic acid or nicotinamide. The experimental design was a 3 X 3 Latin square with three midlactation, ruminally cannulated Holstein cows. Orthogonal comparisons were control versus niacin and nicotinic acid versus nicotinamide. Nicotinamide was more rapidly absorbed from the rumen than nicotinic acid; this may have been caused by differences in the dissociation constants of the compounds. The effects that differential absorption may have on ruminal fermentation and animal metabolism require further study.  相似文献

This two-phase trial involved 83 Holstein heifers. The rearing phase consisted of two diets (alfalfa silage plus corn grain for ad libitum intake vs. corn silage plus urea for ad libitum intake) and two breeding age groups (13 vs. 16 mo). The lactation phase compared the above treatments plus two lactation feeding systems: concentrate fed individually to production versus a TMR. The heifers were assigned randomly to the rearing phase at 7 wk of age and fed their respective diets until 14 d prepartum. They were placed on preassigned lactation diets 14 d prepartum and remained on the lactation phase for 550 consecutive d. Daily gains and height at the withers were similar between forage groups during the first half of the rearing phase; in the second half, the heifers fed alfalfa silage were taller at the withers. Those fed corn silage consumed less DM and CP throughout the rearing phase and gained more BW than the heifers fed alfalfa in the latter half. There were no differences in daily gain or DMI between the breeding age groups. In the lactation phase, the group fed alfalfa for ad libitum intake consumed more DM and gave more milk during the first 90 d of lactation than heifers fed corn silage. However, after 90 d the difference in cumulative milk production was not significant. There were no differences in milk production. FCM, or DMI between breeding age groups. The cows fed concentrate consumed more DM and gave more milk during the first 90 d of lactation. By 550 d, there were no differences. Feeding high levels of corn silage can cause heifers to have lower DMI in early lactation. These differences tend to disappear during the second lactation.  相似文献

At 55 to 70 degrees C, thermal inactivation D-values for Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella, and Listeria monocytogenes were 19.05 to 0.038, 43.10 to 0.096, and 33.11 to 0.12 min, respectively, in ground turkey and 21.55 to 0.055, 37.04 to 0.066, and 36.90 to 0.063 min, respectively, in ground beef. The z-values were 5.73, 5.54, and 6.13 degrees C, respectively, in ground turkey and 5.43, 5.74, and 6.01 degrees C, respectively, in ground beef. In both ground turkey and beef, significant (P < 0.05) differences were found in the D-values between E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella or between E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes. At 65 to 70 degrees C, D-values for E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella, and L. monocytogenes were also significantly (P < 0.05) different between turkey and beef. The obtained D- and z-values were used in predicting process lethality of the pathogens in ground turkey and beef patties cooked in an air impingement oven and confirmed by inoculation studies for a 7-log (CFU/g) reduction of E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella, and L. monocytogenes.  相似文献
