Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are anthropogenic chemicals extensively used in the past for industrial and agricultural purposes, characterized by their lipophilicity, ubiquity, volatility and environmental persistence. By other hand, chlorpyrifos is the most widely used current pesticide (CUPs) being the main insecticide used for crops in Argentina. The aim of this work was to assess levels of POPs and CUPs in different fractions of airborne particles collected indoor in agricultural areas from Argentina. Particles higher than 2.5 µm were trapped in polyurethane foams (PUF) while particles smaller than 1 µm and volatile compounds were adsorbed on activated charcoal. Compounds were analyzed by gas chromatograph with electron capture detector (GC-ECD). Endosulfans, chlordanes, PCBs, and HCHs were detected in all PUF samples, while endosulfans, chlorpyrifos, PCBs, and HCHs were the most abundant in smaller particles. Majority of pesticides showed higher concentrations during the summer season (1397.7 vs 832.5 pg/m3). Even adding up all measured organic compounds, no sample reaches the threshold limit value for indoor pesticides levels (0.1 pg/m3), neither in the large or small particle fraction. However, the fact that chronic exposure to POPs has been linked to several diseases raises concern for human health.  相似文献

Nutrient retention due to sedimentation in running waters has been little studied. The knowledge about the processes of self-purification is important for the management of rivers. The principal aim of our investigations was to quantify nutrient retention by sedimentation within and adjacent to stands of submerged macrophytes. In addition, we examined the relationship between deposition and sedimentation patterns and the flow regime. In the summer of 2001, investigations were performed in the lower River Spree with sediment traps and sediment cores and measurement of flow velocities. The spatial distribution of macrophytes was described and related to sedimentation and flow patterns. Water and sediment samples were analysed for total phosphorus and total organic nitrogen concentrations. Macrophytes significantly enhanced water residence time by factors between 2 and 18. Trapping rates were high within and downstream of macrophyte stands due to the prevailing quiescent conditions. Trapping rates were low in regions not covered by macrophytes, where flow velocities were high. Calculated deposition of organic matter due to trapping rates accounted for 15-49% of observed deposition between May and September, the vegetation period. The difference between calculated and observed deposition can partly be attributed to an incomplete erosion of the organic sediments between October and April. Between May and September, nitrogen and phosphorus were retained by deposition by as much as 2.5% and 12.2%, respectively (% of total load). Therefore, macrophytes considerably contributed to total monthly phosphorus retention (up to 25%) by increasing deposition of particulate organic matter.  相似文献

Quantitative information on microbial processes in the field is important. Here we propose a new field method, the "gas push-pull test" (GPPT) for the in-situ quantification of microbial activities in the vadose zone. To evaluate the new method, we studied microbial methane oxidation above an anaerobic, petroleum-contaminated aquifer. A GPPT consists of the injection of a gas mixture of reactants (e.g., methane, oxygen) and nonreactive tracer gases (e.g., neon, argon) into the vadose zone and the subsequent extraction of the injection gas mixture together with soil air from the same location. Rate constants of gas conversion are calculated from breakthrough curves of extracted reactants and tracers. In agreement with expectations from previously measured gas profiles, we determined first-order rate constants of 0.68 h(-1) at 1.1 m below soil surface and 2.19 h(-1) at 2.7 m, close to the groundwater table. Co-injection of a specific inhibitor (acetylene) for methanotrophs showed that the observed methane consumption was microbially mediated. This was confirmed by increases of stable carbon isotope ratios in methane by up to 42.6 %. In the future, GPPTs should provide useful quantitative information on a range of microbial processes in the vadose zone.  相似文献

The chemical stability of SrFeO3-based perovskites in H2O- and CO2-containing atmospheres at high temperatures and pressures has been examined. The extent of reaction as a function of p CO2, p H2O, temperature, and time has been determined. Either strontium carbonate or Sr(OH)2·H2O was observed on sample surfaces after exposure. Observation of two different reaction-rate behaviors could be explained by the formation of different products. The stability of the perovskite has been found to increase when the activity of Sr is decreased. Chemical stability in H2O/CO2 is important to understand in order to use these membrane materials for syngas production.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:  The objective of this study was to verify the protein turnover rates of healthy older persons under a usual protein-rich diet and to compare values to those described in the literature. This cross-sectional study was conducted at Metabolism Unit, Univ. Hospital of the School of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto, Univ. of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In this study, 7 healthy older persons aged 65.4 ± 2.8 y, with BMI 22.7 ± 2.4 kg/m2 and a mean daily protein intake of 1.34 g of protein/kg were studied. A 9-h whole-body 15N-glycine single-dose study was performed after an overnight fast. During the study, each subject received 6 isoenergetic, isonitrogenous meals at 2-h intervals based on their average intake. Ammonium, urea, and total nitrogen were quantified and analyzed by mass spectrometry, with the determination of total protein turnover rates by the 15N-glycine method. The results show that total nitrogen output was 3.2 ± 0.96 g/N and intake 7.7 ± 1 g/N, 15N nitrogen flux was 30.6 ± 6.3 g/9 h. Endogenous nitrogen balance was positive (4.5 g ± 1 g/N in 9 h). In conclusion, the protein turnover of healthy older persons under a usual protein-rich diet is positive during the fed state and has synthesis and degradation rates similar to those previously described in studies involving diet adaptation periods.  相似文献

The effects of inulin-type fructans (ITF)-containing yacon flour (YF) on Fe bioavailability from ferric pyrophosphate (FP) were evaluated in Fe-deficient rats using the Hb repletion efficiency (HRE) assay. Weanling male Wistar rats were fed a low-Fe diet (12 mg/kg) for 15 days followed by 2 weeks of Fe repletion with diets providing 35 mg Fe/kg as either ferrous sulphate (FS) or FP, supplemented with 7.5% ITF as either YF or Raftilose (RAF), a purified ITF. ITF increased caecal fermentation, whereas YF was more butyrogenic than RAF. ITF improved HRE in FP-fed rats, and those fed YF had a higher relative biological value compared with those fed FP and RAF. Liver Fe was increased by ITF, but only YF led to values similar to those in the FS group. It is observed that ITF increased caecal fermentation and Fe bioavailability. These effects were more pronounced when YF was the ITF source.  相似文献
