The new water quality protection approach of the EU combines the control of emissions with instream Environmental Quality Standards (=EQS). Since 1 April 2006 and actually relevant in the version of 2010 in Austria, priority substances from list A of the EUROPEAN DIERECTIVE 76/464 and further EQS of relevant chemical substances (list B), identified by a national risk assessment, have to be reached to achieve a good ecological state in the surface water (Edict for Water Quality Standards, 2006; changes to the Edict for Water Quality Standards 2010). The practical assessment of these substances after point source emissions is prescribed in the Edict, but rarely carried out. In this paper, two substances, namely: (1) ammonium (list B); and (2) nonylphenol, an endocrine disrupting compound (list A) are presented to discuss: (i) the improvement of treatment efficiency due to the upgrade of a large Waste Water Treatment Plant (=WWTP); (ii) the relevance of mixing processes and modelling as a method to control EQS after point source emissions; and (iii) the improvement of water quality in the ambient surface waters. It is shown that the improved treatment in the case of nonylphenol leads to emission values which fall below the EQS, making an assessment unnecessary. In the case of ammonium emission, values are significantly reduced and violation of EQS is avoided, while mixing modelling is shown to be a suitable instrument to address the resulting instream concentrations at different border conditions.  相似文献

Characteristics of inert starters in drug solution layering are important for successful active pellet formation. Four types of starters composed of sucrose or microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) or lactose and MCC were compared in our study. The active pellets were prepared using Wurster type apparatus. Yield and pellet quality parameters were determined. The highest yield (85.66-89.41%) was obtained for cores composed of MCC due to their insolubility in water (the drug solvent) and good mechanical properties. On the contrary, soluble and brittle sucrose cores dissolved partially during the process forming undesirable agglomerates and giving lower yield (76.2%). All pellet samples showed good flow properties and drug content from 82.4 to 94.5% of the theoretical drug amount.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of the performance of natural, mechanical and hybrid ventilation systems was carried out in an urban measurement campaign during summer period 2002 in Athens, Greece. Three building apartments characterized by different geometry and located in two street canyons with different orientation were studied. The aim was to show the impact of the urban environment on the ventilation efficiency of natural and hybrid systems. The tracer gas decay method has been applied during the experimental procedures with one (N2O) and two tracer gases (N2O and SF6). Based on the results of air-exchange rates using multizone methods from a previous study, a further analysis is performed in the present work for the evaluation of the performance of different ventilation systems in urban conditions, with emphasis on the ventilation efficiency. A methodology to estimate the air-exchange efficiency, on the basis of room mean age of air, in multitracer gas experiments is introduced. In spite of the reduced wind speeds due to the canyon effect, appreciable ventilation rates can be obtained with natural ventilation, especially when cross-ventilation with two or more windows is measured. For single-sided ventilation or under calm conditions, hybrid ventilation has only a slight advantage over natural, either in terms of air-exchange rates or of air-exchange efficiencies.  相似文献

Three major cytoskeletal proteins, actin, tubulin and spectrin, are present in the head of mammalian spermatozoa. Although cytoskeletal proteins are implicated in the regulation of capacitation and the acrosome reaction (AR), their exact role remains poorly understood. The aim of this study was to compare the distribution of the sperm head cytoskeleton before and after the AR in spermatozoa representing a range of acrosome size and shape. Spermatozoa from the human and three rodents (rat, hamster and grey squirrel) were fixed before and after the AR in appropriate medium in vitro. Indirect immunofluorescent localization of cytoskeletal proteins was undertaken with antibodies recognizing actin, spectrin and alpha-tubulin. Preparations were counterstained with propidium iodide and examined by epifluorescent and confocal microscopy. Our results clearly demonstrated changes in localization of cytoskeleton during the AR, mainly in the apical acrosome with further changes to the equatorial segment and post-acrosomal regions. The pattern of cytoskeletal proteins in the sperm head of all the species was similar in respect to various sub-compartments. These observations indicated that the sperm head cortical cytoskeleton exhibits significant changes during the AR and, therefore, support the image of cytoskeletal proteins as highly dynamic structures participating actively in processes prior to fertilization.  相似文献

Renewables portfolio standards (RPS) could be an important policy instrument for 3P and 4P control. We examine the costs of renewable power, accounting for the federal production tax credit, the market value of a renewable credit, and the value of producing electricity without emissions of SO2, NOx, mercury, and CO2. We focus on Texas, which has a large RPS and is the largest U.S. electricity producer and one of the largest emitters of pollutants and CO2. We estimate the private and social costs of wind generation in an RPS compared with the current cost of fossil generation, accounting for the pollution and CO2 emissions. We find that society paid about 5.7 cent/kWh more for wind power, counting the additional generation, transmission, intermittency, and other costs. The higher cost includes credits amounting to 1.1 cent/kWh in reduced SO2, NOx, and Hg emissions. These pollution reductions and lower CO2 emissions could be attained at about the same cost using pulverized coal (PC) or natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) plants with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS); the reductions could be obtained more cheaply with an integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant with CCS.  相似文献

Self-cross-linkable latexes of core–shell microgel particles were synthesized by the emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers. The molar mass of copolymers forming the shell layer was gradually reduced by isooctyl 3-mercaptopropionate included in the synthesis of the shell layers. The molar mass distribution of latex particles was determined using size exclusion chromatography and asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation, respectively, both separation methods being coupled with a multiangle light scattering detector. The results confirmed theoretical predictions and described empirically the effects of molar mass of the shell layer copolymer on decreasing the minimum film-forming temperature and influencing the end-use properties of coatings.  相似文献

Pancreatic cancer is a unique cancer in that up to 90% of its tumour mass is composed of a hypovascular and fibrotic stroma. This makes it extremely difficult for chemotherapies to be delivered into the core of the cancer mass. We tissue-engineered a biomimetic 3D pancreatic cancer (“tumouroid”) model comprised of a central artificial cancer mass (ACM), containing MIA Paca-2 cells, surrounded by a fibrotic stromal compartment. This stromal compartment had a higher concentration of collagen type I, fibronectin, laminin, and hyaluronic acid (HA) than the ACM. The incorporation of HA was validated with alcian blue staining. Response to paclitaxel was determined in 2D MIA Paca-2 cell cultures, the ACMs alone, and in simple and complex tumouroids, in order to demonstrate drug sensitivity within pancreatic tumouroids of increasing complexity. The results showed that MIA Paca-2 cells grew into the complex stroma and invaded as cell clusters with a maximum distance of 363.7 µm by day 21. In terms of drug response, the IC50 for paclitaxel for MIA Paca-2 cells increased from 0.819 nM in 2D to 3.02 nM in ACMs and to 5.87 nM and 3.803 nM in simple and complex tumouroids respectively, indicating that drug penetration may be significantly reduced in the latter. The results demonstrate the need for biomimetic models during initial drug testing and evaluation.  相似文献

An improved technique for obtaining tapping mode scanning force microscopy (TMSFM) images of soft samples submerged in water is described. This technique makes use of a carbon nanotube several microns in length mounted on a conventional silicon cantilever as the TMSFM probe. The sample is covered by a shallow water layer and during imaging only a portion of the nanotube is submerged. This mode of operation largely eliminates the undesirable effects of hydrodynamic damping and acoustic excitation that are present during conventional tapping mode operation in liquids and leads to high-quality TMSFM images. Because of their low bending force constants, carbon nanotubes are ideal for gentle imaging of soft samples. Because of their small (5–20 nm) diameter and cylindrical shape they provide excellent lateral resolution and are ideal for scanning high aspect ratio objects.  相似文献

To our knowledge, no previous research exists concerning the molecular structure and metabolic characteristics of the proteins and energy that new cool-season corn varieties provide for dairy cattle. The objectives of this study were to identify the differences in the molecular structures of proteins among several new cool-season corn varieties [Pioneer P7443R, Pioneer P7213R, Pioneer P7535R (Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc., Johnston, IA), Hyland Baxxos RR, Hyland SR22, and Hyland SR06 (Hyland Seeds, Blenheim, ON, Canada)] using Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FT/IR-ATR) molecular spectroscopy, and to determine the nutrient profile and supply that each variety provided for dairy cattle. The protein molecular structure studies showed that the amide I to amide II ratio ranged from 1.09 to 1.66 and that the α-helix to β-sheet ratio ranged from 0.95 to 1.01 among the new cool-season corn varieties. Energy content was significantly different among the new varieties. We found significant differences in the protein and carbohydrate subfractions and in the ruminal degradation kinetics of the organic matter, crude protein, starch, and neutral detergent fiber of the new varieties. The new varieties had similar estimated intestinal digestibilities for rumen undegraded crude protein. However, the new varieties had significant differences in predicted total truly absorbable protein, ranging from 39 to 57 g/kg of dry matter, indicating that these newly developed varieties are satisfactory sources of truly absorbed protein for dairy cattle. Further study on the molecular structure profiles of cool-season corn in relation to its nutrient utilization and availability in dairy cattle is necessary.  相似文献
