Studies of neurite outgrowth or cell migration, two important processes in neuronal networks formation, are facilitated by cell culture models capable of orientating cellular growth and of designing a well-defined cellular pattern. Heterogeneous polystyrene surfaces composed of oxygen plasma-treated stripes (PSox) with a low hydrophobicity separated by non-treated areas (PS) have these properties. In this study, to guide cell growth, we developed a cell culture model using these supports and we identified the molecular factors involved in cellular orientation. When the heterogeneous supports were not coated, proteins from a serum culture medium were required for cells to line up on PSox. On the other hand, cell orientation on coated surfaces was clearly influenced by competitive adsorption of adhesive proteins such as fibronectin or collagen and anti-adhesive molecules as pluronic F68 or albumin. Attachment factors were adsorbed on PSox stripes while adsorption of anti-adhesive molecules on the most hydrophobic PS areas prevented cell adhesion or growth. Thus, we describe the preparation of a cell culture substrate that succeeded in orientating cell growth and that led to a line of cells on adhesive PSox stripes ranging from 2 to 100 microns width.  相似文献

A novel clock recovery IC for optical fiber communication systems with data rates up to several Gb/s is presented. It combines nonlinear signal preprocessing directly with a regenerative frequency divider scheme and an external filter in the divider loop. Hence, the center frequency of the filter and the working frequency of the amplifier are halved. The extracted clock frequency corresponds to half the bit rate, as required for many clocked circuit components within fiber optic lines. Two versions of the same IC design, scheduled for two bit rate ranges between 0.3-4 Gb/s, are realized with a conventional Si bipolar process. A heterodyne phase-shift laser range finder has been developed for the measurement of distances of 1 m to 10 m. An analysis of the crosstalk between the current source and the photoelectric receiver of this device permits prediction of the accuracy of the setup. For example, when the amplitude of the crosstalk is proportional to the modulation frequency and for a given photoelectric signal-to-induction ratio of 30 at 10 m, the maximum corresponding error is about 5 cm. To determine the magnitude of the crosstalk, we propose a model taking into account that the amplitude and the phase-shift of the induced signal depend on whether the coupling is inductive or capacitive. Crosstalk modeling shows that very slight inductive or capacitive coupling is sufficient to affect distance measurement  相似文献

A 1.3 μm uncooled transmitter with wide-open eye diagrams at laser temperatures of 20, 50, and 85°C is presented. Using this transmitter, it is demonstrated that 10 Gbit/s transmission is possible over a 50 km nonzero dispersion-shifted Lucent TrueWave-RS fibre. Long-term memory impairment is often found in schizophrenia. The question remains whether this is caused by other cognitive deficits. One hundred eighteen first-episode patients were compared with 45 control participants on several memory tasks. The role of processing speed and central executive functions on memory performance was examined with regression analysis for all participants and for patients separately. Deficits were found in general verbal learning performance and retrieval in episodic memory and semantic memory. Processing speed reduced disease-related variance in all memory variables. Coordination, organization of information, and speed of processing were the best predictors for long-term memory deficits in patients. Many recent advances in the study of granular media have stemmed from the improved capability to image and track individual grains in two and three dimensions. While two-dimensional systems readily yield both translational and rotational motion, a challenge in three-dimensional experiments is the tracking of rotational motion of isotropic particles. We propose an extension of the refractive index matched scanning technique as a method of measuring individual particle rotation. Initial measurements indicate that shear-driven rotational motion may stem from gear-like motion within the shear zone.  相似文献

Internal reflection ellipsometry was used for detection of the consecutive coating of two polyelectrolytes, poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), onto a tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) substrate until the 10th bilayer. The UV patterned PAH-PAA-multilayer was characterized in air via ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy. Suited optical models enabled the determination of the layer thicknesses in wet and dry states. Linear multilayer formation could be proved by Attenuated Total Reflection — Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy measurements following the increase of the ν(C=O) band depending on the adsorption of the PAA. Streaming potential measurements after each layer deposition step indicated a change in surface charge after each layer deposition due to the consecutive coating of PAH and PAA. In this article the internal reflection ellipsometry is shown to be a convenient possibility to analyze the modification of a thin transparent Ta2O5 substrate.  相似文献
