We studied ancient enamels on gilded copper from a collection of archeological horse harness pendants of the Museo Instituto Valencia de Don Juan (Madrid, Spain) to test the benefits of a new, nondestructive analytical methodology based on chemometric analysis (i.e., Principal Component Analysis, PCA) on micro‐ATR‐FTIR spectral data and chemical quantification using SEM‐EDS. The novelty of this approach was threefold: (i) PCA allowed the discrimination of the different harness pendants of known origin and attributed to the 14th and 15th centuries according to the chemical complex composition, nanostructure, glass weathering, and/or coloring mechanisms of each colored enamel, separately (i.e., red, purple, blue, and white), (ii) it is a cheap, easily available and nondestructive methodology that enables us to (iii) draw archeological conclusions about the quality of the manufacturing process, reassess the chronology of these objects and attempt to attribute them to different workshops according to the different traditional recipes identified. In particular, the enamels were made of alkali and/or alkaline earth lead‐glass with a wide range of chemical compounds in the form of pigments or opacifiers. Two types of coloring mechanisms were identified, colloidal particles such as copper‐ruby for red enamels, and ionic mechanisms such as Fe(II) and Co(II) to achieve a blue pigments; Mn(III) in the purple pigment; and two kind of white enamels were identified, i.e., tin oxide as an opacifier and uranium oxide. In addition, we established the reason for the poor state of conservation of some of the enamels by means of the identification of depolymerization and ion exchanges, well‐known harmful effects of glass weathering, and finally a chronology was assigned for some of these pieces according to the enamel composition.  相似文献

Polyamide 6/ethylene–propylene–diene metallocene terpolymer/(ethylene–propylene–diene copolymer)‐graft‐(maleic anhydride) blends with clay (3 and 5 wt % depending on the formulation), different clays (montmorillonite and sepiolite) and different surface functionalization (ammonium salts and silanes) were studied to analyze the effect of the shape of clay and type of modifier on their properties. The results have shown that sepiolite has higher influence on the morphology and on the mechanical properties than montmorillonite. In that sense, blends with 3 wt % of sepiolite have reached the best balanced properties, i.e., tensile modulus and impact strength, than their homologous with montmorillonite. Furthermore, the blends with 3 wt % of sepiolite have reached the highest mechanical properties compared with blends with higher montmorillonite content. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. We examined effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), their corresponding hydroperoxy fatty acids (hp-PUFA), as well as various pro- and antioxidants on the growth of tumor cells in culture. When cultured in RPMI 1640 medium, A-427 and WEHI clone 13 cells were both highly sensitive to hydroperoxy docosahexaenoic acid (hp-DHA), but they were far less sensitive in minimum essential medium (MEM). In contrast, A-427 cells were also sensitive to DHA in both culture media, while WEHI clone 13 cells, as well as other cell lines, tested in their respective media, were resistant. The lower sensitivity of the cell lines to hp-DHA in MEM-medium was apparently due to a more rapid reduction of hp-DHA to the corre-sponding hydroxy-DHA in MEM-medium. Addition of glutathione (GSH) to the culture medium abolished the effects of hp-DHA, but not the effects of DHA, while depletion of intracellular GSH levels by L-buthionine-S,R-sulfoximine strongly enhanced the cytotoxic effect of hp-DHA, but not the cytotoxic effect of DHA. α-Tocopherol protected A-427 cells against the toxic effect of DHA and abolished the induced lipid peroxidation, while it did not protect against the toxic effects of hp-DHA in A-427 or WEHI clone 13 cells. Ascorbic acid reduced the cytotoxic effect of DHA, but potentiated the toxic effect of hp-DHA while selenite essentially abolished the toxicity of both DHA and hp-DHA. These results indicate that sensitivity of tumor cell lines to PUFA and their oxidation products depends on their antioxidant defense mechanisms, as well as culture conditions, and establishes hp-DHA as a major, but probably not the sole, metabolite responsible for cytotoxicity of DHA.  相似文献

Although polymer blend nanocomposites are widely studied, the balance between stiffness and toughness has not yet been investigated in detail. Some materials producers as well as some sectors in the automotive industry try to improve the toughness of materials without an important loss in stiffness. With this in mind, the aim of the study reported here was to obtain a good balance between toughness and stiffness of polymer blends with different amounts of clay and compatibilizer. In this context, the microstructure of polyamide 6/ethylene–propylene–diene metallocene terpolymer/(ethylene–propylene–diene copolymer)‐graft‐(maleic anhydride) blends with various amounts of clay (2, 3, 4 and 5 wt%) and compatibilizer (10 and 20 wt%) was studied to analyse the achieved morphology to understand the macroscopic properties. The morphology of the rubber phase and the dispersion of the montmorillonite (MMT) are the main factors that influence the mechanical properties. In this sense, the highest Young's modulus is achieved for nanoblends with 5 wt% of MMT, although this nanoblend has the lowest value of notched Izod impact strength. The results obtained suggest that there is a clear trade‐off between stiffness, toughness and temperature behaviour when the ratio of (ethylene–propylene–diene copolymer)‐graft‐(maleic anhydride) to MMT is 5:1. In this paper, we introduce a scientific format for text-based data files, which facilitates storing and communicating tabular data sets. The so-called Full-Metadata Format builds on the widely used INI-standard and is based on four principles: readable self-documentation, flexible structure, fail-safe compatibility, and searchability. As a consequence, all metadata required to interpret the tabular data are stored in the same file, allowing for the automated generation of publication-ready tables and graphs and the semantic searchability of data file collections. The Full-Metadata Format is introduced on the basis of three comprehensive examples. The complete format and syntax are given in the appendix.  相似文献

The metal chelating activity, antioxidant properties, and the effect on cell growth of a polyphenol extract from Vicia sativa have been investigated, and compared to those of soybean. The extracts from V. sativa seeds contained three and five times more polyphenols and flavonoids than soybean, respectively. The soybean polyphenol extracts showed higher copper and iron chelating activity than those from V. sativa, although polyphenols from V. sativa were more effective in preventing β-carotene oxidation and showed higher reducing power and scavenging activity than soybean polyphenols. In addition, V. sativa polyphenols were toxic to THP-1 leukemic cells, as opposed to polyphenols extracted from soybean that did not show any antiproliferative activity at similar concentrations. In conclusion, V. sativa polyphenol extracts show promising antioxidant and antiproliferative activities that may be of interest from a functional point of view and for the revalorization of this ancient crop.  相似文献

An experimental demonstration is given of the use of a transversal RF photonic filter to accomplish intermodal dispersion equalisation in a 10 Gbit/s optical fibre link using a Fabry-Perot laser. The structure operates in an equivalent fashion to an electronic equaliser but in the photonic domain. A record distance of 24.2 km using the equalising filter is obtained.  相似文献
