In preparation for the introduction of Project 2000 throughout Scotland, a need was identified to monitor the quality of the learning environment for student nurses in the practice setting. No mechanism existed to measure quality and standards, and a group was formed to devise, pilot and implement an educational audit tool which could address these requirements, since limited information was available in the literature. Using this tool, the group subsequently examined the learning opportunities available, concentrating on the physical environment, the learning climate/environment, and the students' perceptions of the learning environment within the practice setting, across hospital and community sectors, including residential accommodation and nurseries, in the wide geographical area covered by the health board. This paper describes the process by which the tool was formulated, tested and implemented, the problems encountered, and the improvements in communications between teaching and clinical staff, leading to improved opportunities for the provision of excellence in patient care.  相似文献

Gain adaptation of eye and head movement components of simian gaze shifts. J. Neurophysiol. 78: 2817-2821, 1997. To investigate the site of gaze adaptation in primates, we reduced the gain of large head-restrained gaze shifts made to 50 degrees target steps by jumping the target 40% backwards during a targeting saccade and then tested gain transfer to the eye- and head-movement components of head-unrestrained gaze shifts. After several hundred backstep trials, saccadic gain decreased by at least 10% in 8 of 13 experiments, which were then selected for further study. The minimum saccadic gain decrease in these eight experiments was 12.8% (mean = 18.4%). Head-unrestrained gaze shifts to ordinary 50 degrees target steps experienced a gain reduction of at least 9.3% (mean = 14.9%), a mean gain transfer of 81%. Both the eye and head components of the gaze shift also decreased. However, average head movement gain decreased much more (22.1%) than eye movement gain (9.2%). Also, peak head velocity generally decreased significantly (20%), but peak eye velocity either increased or remained constant (average increase of 5.6%). However, the adapted peak eye and head velocities were appropriate for the adapted, smaller gaze amplitudes. Similar dissociations in eye and head metrics occurred when head-unrestrained gaze shifts were adapted directly (n = 2). These results indicated that head-restrained saccadic gain adaptation did not produce adaptation of eye movement alone. Nor did it produce a proportional gain change in both eye and head movement. Rather, normal eye and head amplitude and velocity relations for a given gaze amplitude were preserved. Such a result could be explained most easily if head-restrained adaptation were realized before the eye and head commands had been individualized. Therefore, gaze adaptation is most likely to occur upstream of the creation of separate eye and head movement commands.  相似文献

An attempt was made to clarify the effect of culture conditions of an acetic acid bacteria (Acetobacter xylinum) on cellulose biosynthesis using glucose as carbon source in complex medium. Synchronous culture conditions were first realised on cellulose biosynthesis by cooling the system to 4°C for 24 h. Under the synchronous conditions stepwise division of the cell and the stepwise production of cellulose were found. Furthermore, cellulose was proved to be produced when the cell number in the medium was constant.  相似文献

Summary The rheological behavior of the cholesteric side-chain copolysiloxane whose two kinds of mesogenic groups consist of cholesteryl units and biphenyl benzoate units was investigated for three different compositions: 31:69, 35:65, 37:63 (in mol%). On the frequency dependence diagram of G′ for the copolymers at various temperatures, G′ decreases with decreasing frequency. The slope of G′ in a higher frequency region at lower temperatures (110°–130°C) is similar to that in the flow region of amorphous polymer melts. However, the slope of G′ in a lower frequency region at higher temperatures (140°–160°C) is relatively small, and the G′ curves in this region can not be superposed on to a single master curve. This deviation seems to be due to change in stability of the domain structure of the cholesteric phase. Furthermore, on the temperature dependence curve of G′, G′ showed a maximum near T c1 . This maximum of G′ curve seems to be caused by molecular organization of a blue phase.  相似文献

Transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding enables joining at lower temperatures than traditional bonding techniques and preserves the potential for high-temperature applications, making it particularly attractive for joining ultra-high-temperature ceramics (UHTCs) such as carbides and borides. The feasibility of a TLP joint between “pure” carbides has been recently demonstrated. The present study examines the interactions that occur between undoped HfC or MoSi2-doped HfC and a Ni/Nb/Ni multilayer interlayer during TLP bonding. Bonding is performed at 1400 °C for 30 min in a high-vacuum furnace. SEM–EDS characterization shows that the reaction layer formed at the interlayer/ceramic interface contains mixed carbides and depending upon the ceramic, Ni–Nb–Hf, or Ni–Nb–Hf–Si, or Ni–Nb–Si alloys. Nanoindentation tests traversing the reaction layer between the bulk ceramic and Nb foil midplane also show a clear transition zone across which the indentation modulus and hardness vary. Crack-free joints have been obtained with undoped HfC. The addition of 5 vol% MoSi2 introduces small (<5 μm long) isolated cracks within the reaction layer, whereas with 15 vol% MoSi2 added, cracking was pervasive within the reaction layer. When the reaction layer exceeds a critical thickness, as in the case of the bond obtained with HfC doped with 15 vol% MoSi2, residual stresses become sufficiently large to cause extensive cracking and bond failure. The results suggest a need to characterize and balance the positive role of additives on sintering with the potentially deleterious role they may have on joining.  相似文献

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a newly invented technology that can effectively harvest ambient mechanical energy from various motions with promising applications in portable electronics, self‐powered sensor networks, etc. Here, by coupling TENG and a thin film of ferroelectric polymer, a new application is designed for TENG as a self‐powered memory system for recording a mechanical displacement/trace. The output voltage produced by the TENG during motion can polarize the dipole moments in the ferroelectric thin film. Later, by applying a displacement current measurement to detect the polarization density in the ferroelectric film, the motion information of the TENG can be directly read. The sliding TENG and the single‐electrode TENG matrix are both utilized for realizing the memorization of the motion trace in one‐dimensional and two‐dimensional space, respectively. Currently, the ferroelectric thin film with a size of 3.1 mm2 can record a minimum area changing of 30 mm2 and such resolution can still be possibly improved. These results prove that the ferroelectric polymer is an effective memory material to work together with TENG and thereby the fabricated memory system can potentially be used as a self‐powered displacement monitor.  相似文献

An experiment was performed to simulate an air‐cooling panel system for passive decay heat removal from a high‐temperature gas‐cooled reactor to investigate the performance of decay heat removal and the temperature distributions of components of the system. The experimental apparatus consisted of a pressure vessel 1 m wide and 3 m high. Nineteen simulated standpipes containing heaters with a maximum heating rate of 100 kW simulated residual heat of the core, and the cooling panels surrounded the pressure vessel. An analytical code (THANPACST2) was applied to the experimental data to investigate the validity of the analytical method and the model proposed. Under the conditions of helium gas at a pressure of 0.64 MPa and temperature of 514 °C in the pressure vessel, the predicted temperature distribution in the pressure vessel was estimated and was within ?10 to +50 °C as compared to the experimental data. The analysis indicated that the heat transferred to the cooling panel was 15.4% less than the experimental value. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Precise control of differentiation processes of pluripotent stem cells is a key component for the further development of regenerative medicine. For this purpose, combining a cell-aggregate-size treatment for regulating intercellular signal transmissions and an electrical stimulation technique for inducing cellular responses is a promising approach. In the present study, we developed microfabricated electrode substrates that allow simultaneous stimulation of embryoid bodies (EBs) of P19 cells. Mouse embryonal carcinoma P19 cells can be induced to differentiate into three germ layers and serve as a promising stem cell model. Microcavity–array patterns were fabricated onto indium–tin–oxide (ITO) substrates using a standard photo-lithography technique, and uniform-sized EBs of P19 cells were inserted into each microcavity. Electrical stimulation was applied to the EBs through substrate electrodes and stimulus-induced intracellular calcium transients were monitored. We confirmed that the developed electrode device could simultaneously stimulate smaller (200 μm diameter) and larger (500 μm diameter) EBs inserted in the microcavities and induce specific spatio-temporal patterns of intracellular calcium transients in the EBs with fine reproducibility. We concluded that the developed microcavity array with embedded electrodes could simultaneously and effectively stimulate uniform-sized EBs inserted in it. Therefore, it is a promising experimental tool for precisely controlling cell differentiation processes.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Cardiac allograft rejection is accompanied by cellular infiltration and tissue edema resulting in myocardial relaxation abnormalities. Doppler tissue imaging is capable of measuring myocardial relaxation velocities and is useful in the detection of heart rejection. However, the influence of ventricular loading conditions on myocardial relaxation velocities has not been studied. This study is performed to determine whether myocardial relaxation velocities are affected by left ventricular loading conditions. METHODS: Twenty heart transplant recipients without evidence of rejection by endomyocardial biopsy underwent preload and afterload reduction with nitroglycerin. The pulmonary wedge pressure was reduced from 18.2+/-0.9 to 12.0+/-0.9 mm Hg 9 (p=0.001) and the mean blood pressure from 130.0+/-5.6 to 116.1+/-7.0 mm Hg (p=0.001). Pulsed-wave Doppler tissue imaging was performed before and after administration of nitroglycerin, and the peak myocardial relaxation velocities of the inferior wall were measured. RESULTS: Myocardial relaxation velocities did not change with the administration of nitroglycerin; 0.188+/-0.009 to 0.178+/- 0.006 m/sec (p=0.4) in spite of a significant reduction in pulmonary capillary wedge pressure. Furthermore, there was no correlation between pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, mean arterial pressure, wall stress, and myocardial relaxation velocities. CONCLUSIONS: Loading conditions on the left ventricle have no influence on myocardial relaxation velocities. Therefore in heart transplant recipients changes in myocardial relaxation velocities by Doppler tissue imaging may be useful in the diagnosis of rejection, in spite of diverse loading conditions.  相似文献
