Selective phosphorylation of adult tau isoforms in mature hippocampal neurons exposed to fibrillar A beta

How senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles are linked represents a major gap in our understanding of the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. We characterized a hippocampal neuronal culture system in which tau undergoes maturation in vivo; rat neurons maintained in culture for more than 3 weeks replicated the splicing and phosphorylation changes that tau undergoes upon maturation in situ. Using this model system, we induced an Alzheimer-like neuritic dystrophy following the application of fibrillar beta-amyloid. The dystrophy consisted of focal distortions and swellings within the neurites and an altered phosphorylation of the adult tau isoforms. Fibrillar beta-amyloid induced the concomitant activation of MAP kinase and GSK3 beta. The aberrant activation of several signaling pathways may lead to the abnormal phosphorylation of tau and neuritic degeneration.     

A novel method for elimination of line-current harmonics insingle-stage PFC switching regulators

This paper studies a particular single-stage power-factor-correction (PFC) switching regulator employing a discontinuous-conduction-mode (DCM) boost-input cell and a continuous-current-mode (CCM) forward output cell. Although this single-stage PFC regulator can provide a reasonably high power factor when its PFC stage is operating in discontinuous mode, substantial reduction in line-current harmonics is possible by applying a suitable frequency-modulation scheme. This paper derives a frequency-modulation scheme and proposes a practical implementation using a simple translinear analog circuit. A quantitative analysis on the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the line current when the circuit is subject to a limited range of frequency variations is presented along with some considerations for practical design. Experimental data obtained from a prototype confirms the effectiveness of the proposed frequency-modulation scheme. The proposed analog translinear circuit allows custom integrated circuit implementation, making it a viable low-cost solution to the elimination of line-current harmonics in switching regulators

Contact stomatitis is rather uncommon because of the relative resistance of the oral mucosa to irritant agents and allergens. The clinical manifestations of contact stomatitis are extremely variable and include erythema, erosions, ulcerations, leukoplakia-like lesions, and lichenoid reactions. Clinical signs are frequently less pronounced than subjective symptoms, and patients commonly experience severe functional problems despite only mild mucosal alterations. Allergic stomatitis is rare and almost always attributable to metallic mercury and gold salts. A careful history and an accurate examination of the oral cavity, teeth, and dental restorations are essential for a correct diagnosis. Patch testing is indicated in all lesions that are not clearly related to trauma or physical injuries. Patch testing is not useful in the burning mouth syndrome. Evaluation of clinical relevance of patch test results is always very difficult and requires an interdisciplinary approach to the patient. Successful treatment requires the identification and elimination of the causative factor, when possible. It is important to bear in mind that replacement of dental restorations and prostheses may be very expensive and stressful for the patient and thus should not be recommended when their causative role is doubtful.     

Acquiring rule sets as a product of learning in a logical neuralarchitecture

Envisioning neural networks as systems that learn rules calls forth the verification issues already being studied in knowledge-based systems engineering, and complicates these with neural-network concepts such as nonlinear dynamics and distributed memories. We show that the issues can be clarified and the learned rules visualized symbolically by formalizing the semantics of rule-learning in the mathematical language of two-valued predicate logic. We further show that this can, at least in some cases, be done with a fairly simple logical model. We illustrate this with a combination of two example neural-network architectures, LAPART, designed to learn rules as logical inferences from binary data patterns, and the stack interval network, which converts real-valued data into binary patterns that preserve the semantics of the ordering of real values. We discuss the significance of the formal model in facilitating the analysis of the underlying logic of rule-learning and numerical data representation. We provide examples to illustrate the formal model, with the combined stack interval/LAPART networks extracting rules from numerical data.

Simplified 0.35-μm flash EEPROM process using high-temperatureoxide (HTO) deposited by LPCVD as interpoly dielectrics and peripheraltransistors gate oxide

A simplified flash EEPROM process was developed using high-temperature LPCVD oxide both as flash cells interpoly dielectrics and as peripheral transistors gate oxide (decoding logic). An O₂ anneal at 850°C lowers charge trapping and interface trap density induced by Fowler-Nordheim injection. However, electron trapping remains slightly higher than with dry thermal oxide. Similar memory charge loss and write-erase endurance are obtained as for ONO-insulated cells. HTO thus proves to have the required quality and reliability to be used in flash EEPROMs
