To establish an animal model for the controlled study of enteral nutrition by tube, five adult chair-adapted primates (Macaca fasicularis) had gastrostomy and jejunostomy tubes placed for the delivery of a modified protein isolate diet. Following 7 days of postoperative depletion with a hypocaloric infusion of dextrose (20 kcal, 0 g N/kg/day), the animals were repleted for 10 days with tube feedings (124 kcal, 0.73 g N/kg/day). There was no operative mortality or morbidity and each animal demonstrated conversion to anabolism by significant weight gain, positive nitrogen balance, and net protein synthesis as determined by [15N]glycine protein turnover rates. Significant correlation was found between caloric intake and nitrogen balance at the level of nitrogen provided in this diet (r = 0.88, p less than 0.05). This model was found to be well suited for the surgical and nutritional techniques required for the long-term study of enteral nutrition by tube.  相似文献

Aspiration of hydrochloric acid in rabbits resulted in an increased P(A-a)O2 together with increases in both lung water volume and lung extravascular albumin. This finding suggests lung damage following acid aspiration is related to changes in capillary permeability, with pulmonary edema resulting from the movement of albumin and water into the interstitial space. Therapy with albumin and furosemide together reduced the lung water and albumin accumulation and decreased P(A-a)O2. Treatment with albumin or furosemide alone was ineffective. Caution should be exercised in administering albumin alone for therapy of pulmonary edema when plasma protein is not clearly decreased, or when increased pulmonary capillary permeability is suspected.  相似文献

Arachis hypogaea L. ‘Tifspan’ and ‘Florunner’ peanuts (groundnuts) were treated with selected foliar fungicides for control of Cercospora leafspot. Peanut fruits were harvested on three different dates and analysed for aflatoxin, oil and protein content and degree of maturity. No significant differences (P = <0.05) in aflatoxin incidence were associated with either fungicide treatments or harvest dates. Significant differences were observed, however, in the percentage protein and oil content of the peanut kernels, depending upon the fungicide treatment. Delayed maturity was caused by specific fungicide treatments.  相似文献

The cell-free rumen fluid from cattle fed hay or grain exhibited the following biological characteristics which strongly suggest the presence of endotoxin or a toxic principle similar to endotoxin of gram-negative bacteria: proved lethal to mice when injected with actinomycin D; proved extremely lethal to chick embryo; induced biphasic pyogenic response in rabbits; enhanced susceptibility to bacterial infection in mice; evoked positive epinephrine skin reaction in rabbits and phenol-water or aqueous ether proved lethal to mice and chick embryos. A quantitative difference in concentrations of endotoxin was observed on LD50 in mice and chick embryos and response to the epinephrine skin test in rabbits. Cell-free rumen fluid of grain-fed cattle contained at least twice as much endotoxin as that of hay-fed cattle. Endotoxin in cell-free rumen fluid and in higher concentration in cattle fed grain than in those fed hay support the hypothesis that rumen bacterial endotoxins may participate in the pathogenesis of diseases associated with high grain feeding such as lactic acidosis and the sudden-death syndrome.  相似文献

Three groups of gamma-aminobutyric acid--containing neurons were found in the mammillary region of the posterior hypothalamus. The groups correspond to the tuberal, caudal, and postmammillary caudal magnocellular nuclei. Many cells in these nuclei were retrogradely labeled with fast blue after the injection of this fluorescent dye into the neocortex. Immunohistochemical experiments showed that these same neurons also contained the gamma-aminobutyric acid-synthesizing enzyme glutamate decarboxylase. These results provide morphological evidence for a gamma-aminobutyric acid pathway arising in magnocellular neurons of the posterior hypothalamus and innervating the neocortex.  相似文献

The treatment of rats with hepatotoxic doses of hydrazine (NH2-NH2) induces the rapid formation of 7-methylguanine and O6-methylguanine in liver DNA. The methyl moiety in these reactions might be derived from the cellular S-adenosylmethionine pool because radioactivity administered to these rats as methionine rapidly appears in the DNA as methylated guanine. An increased incorporation of radioactivity into 5-methylcytosine was previously reported followed by subsequent suppression. This increased radiolabeling of 5-methylcytosine coincided with time of maximal DNA guanine methylation. To determine the nature of S-adenosylmethionine metabolism during the period of DNA methylation induced by hydrazine treatment, and to determine if the increased radiolabeling of 5-methylcytosine at this time reflected an actual increase in 5-methylcytosine synthesis, liver DNA synthesis and S-adenosylmethionine levels and turnover were assayed. Liver S-adenosylmethionine concentrations varied slightly between control rats and hydrazinetreated rats during the first five hours after hydrazine administration, and no difference was detectable in the incorporation of administered [3H]methionine into S-adenosylmethionine. Because S-adenosylmethionine specific radioactivity in hydrazine-treated rats was not different from control rats, the previously observed increased radiolabeling of 5-methylcytosine appeared to represent an actual increase in synthesis. This conclusion was supported by finding that incorporation of radioactive thymidine into DNA was also accelerated immediately following hydrazine administration, again followed by a decrease. 5-Methylcytosine sythesis, therefore, appears to follow DNA synthesis during hydrazine toxicity, and formation of 7-methylguanine and O6-methylguanine in liver DNA of hydrazine-treated rats occurs during a short period of increased DNA sythesis and 5-methylcytosine formation very early in hydrazine toxicity.  相似文献

Bovine feces are a potential vehicle for transmitting enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 to humans. A study was undertaken to determine survival characteristics of E. coli O157:H7 on iceberg lettuce using 0.1% peptone water and bovine feces as carriers for inocula. Four levels of inoculum, ranging from 10(0) to 10(5) CFU of E. coli O157:H7 per g of lettuce, were applied. Populations surviving on lettuce stored at 4 degrees C were monitored for up to 15 days. Regardless of the type of carrier, viable cells of E. coli O157:H7 were detected on lettuce after 15 days, even when the initial inoculum was 10(0) to 10(1) CFU/g. Spray treatments of lettuce with 200 ppm chlorine solution or deionized water were equally effective in killing or removing E. coli O157:H7 from lettuce. Holding lettuce for 5 min after spray treatment was not more effective in reducing populations than holding for 1 min before rinsing with water. Prevention of contamination of lettuce with bovine feces that may harbor E. coli O157:H7 as well as other infectious microorganisms is essential to minimizing the risk of illness. The development of sanitizers more efficacious than chlorine for the removal of pathogens from raw fruits and vegetable is needed.  相似文献
