Magnetic induction micromachine-part I: Design and analysis

Most microscale electric and magnetic machines studied in the last decade lack the power density to support many practical applications. This paper introduces a design for a magnetic induction machine that offers power densities in excess of 200 MW/m/sup 3/ and efficiencies of up to 50%, while providing more than 10 W of mechanical power. This is a substantial performance increase in MEMS electromagnetic machines studied to date.     

A 16-Mbit/s adapter chip for the IBM token-ring local area network

The authors describe a 9.02×9.02-mm chip built in 1-μm CMOS with two levels of metal and an additional mask level for fabricating capacitors. It contains both analog and digital circuits and has provisions for self-test. The function includes the transmitter, receiver, protocol handler, an microprocessor, as well as interfaces for RAM/ROM storage, IBM PC bus, IBM PS/2 bus, IBM 3174 bus, and Motorola 68000 bus. The physical design terrains are formed by 24K circuits of standard cell gates, a 10K-circuit equivalent hand-honed custom microprocessor, and an analog macro. The chip operates from a single 5-V supply, and the power consumption is 0.8 W nominal at 16 Mb/s. The chip can also be operated at 4 Mb/s

Web-based systems design: a study of contemporary practices and an explanatory framework based on “method-in-action”

This paper reports the findings of a detailed study of Web-based systems design (WBSD) practices in Ireland based on data collected over a 3-year period (2002–2005), the objectives of which were to (1) contribute towards a richer understanding of the current “real-world” context of WBSD by characterising the profile of a typical project (team size, timeframe, nature of requirements, etc.) and identifying the key challenges, constraints, and imperatives (i.e. “mediating factors”) faced by Web-based system designers, and (2) understand how those contextual parameters and mediating factors influence the activity of WBSD as regards the selection and enactment of whatever design practices are therefore engaged (i.e. the use of methods, procedures, etc.). Data was gathered through a survey which yielded 165 usable responses, and later through a series of semi-structured qualitative interviews. Using grounded theory, an explanatory conceptual framework is derived, based on an extension of the “method-in-action” model, the application of which to WBSD has not been previously investigated in depth. It is proposed that this framework of WBSD issues is valuable in a number of ways to educators, researchers, practitioners, and method engineers.     

Movement sequencing disorders in Parkinson's disease

Ten PD patients and ten age-matched normal controls learned a sequence of 3 or 4 different hand movements to a criterion of 5 consecutive correct trials. They also performed a control sequence of 3 or 4 movements which involved the repetition of the same hand posture. Trials to reach criterion, errors, total response time and its components, response time for each movement and inter-response time were examined. There were no group differences in trials to criterion or errors. Total movement time as well as response and inter-response times were significantly longer for the PD patients, however, but only for sequences involving different hand movements not for the repetitive sequences. The relative timing of the responses was also different with the PD patients spending proportionately more time on each response and the controls spending more time between responses. The implications of these findings for understanding the movement sequencing impairments in PD are discussed.     

p53 protein expression in extrahepatic bile duct cancer

p53 mutations, a tumor suppressor gene located on chromosome 17p, are the most common genetic alterations found in human cancers. Although the p53 expression or mutation has been investigated in a variety of cancers there have been very few studies in extrahepatic bile duct cancers. In this study, we investigated the immunohistochemical expression of p53 in formalin fixed paraffin embedded archival specimens of 36 extrahepatic bile duct cancers in which p53 expression was found in eighteen (50%) cases. There was no significant difference in age, gender, size of tumor, histologic grade, extent of tumor involvement, lymph node metastasis and tumor resectability according to p53 immunoreactivity. Comparison of survival duration according to p53 expression showed no significant difference. In conclusion, we reported 50 percent of p53 expression in extrahepatic bile duct cancers by immunohistochemical staining and we found no prognostic significance of p53 expression in dinicopathologic parameters.     

Effect of postischemic reperfusion on microcirculation and lipid metabolism of skeletal muscle

To study the effect of ischemia reperfusion injury on microvascular reactivity and tissue metabolism in skeletal muscle, a Sprague-Dawley rat cremaster muscle was prepared as a tourniquet ischemia model and subjected to 2 hr ischemia followed by 1 hr reperfusion to simulate the timing of ischemia during microvascular surgery. The dose-response curve of arteriolar reactivity to norepinephrine, lipid peroxidation, and ultrastructure of capillaries was determined in both the control and postischemic reperfusion stages. Judging from the results, we summarize our observations as follows: (1) Postischemic reperfusion significantly increased arteriolar reactivity to norepinephrine, in which the EC50 for vasoconstriction decreased in all three orders of arterioles. These results suggest that reperfusion could have impaired the vasodilation control mechanism, possibly being endothelium dependent. (2) Lipid peroxidation increased sixfold in the reperfusion group, suggesting that oxygen free radicals have produced significant tissue damage under the created conditions. (3) Significant endothelial damage in the capillaries shown by electron microscope observation supports these studies, indicating that ischemia/reperfusion in clinically transplanted skeletal muscles could cause significant damage to the tissue microcirculation both physiologically and metabolically.     

The human obesity gene map: the 1997 update

An update of the human obesity gene map incorporating published results up to October 1997 is presented. Evidence from Mendelian disorders exhibiting obesity as a clinical feature; single-gene mutation rodent models; quantitative trait loci uncovered in human genome-wide scans and in crossbreeding experiments with mouse, rat, and pig models; association and case-control studies with candidate genes; and linkage studies with genes and other markers is reviewed. All chromosomal locations of the animal loci are converted into human genome locations based on syntenic relationships between the genomes. A complete listing of all of these loci reveals that all but chromosome Y of the 24 human chromosomes are represented. Some chromosomes show at least three putative loci related to obesity on both arms (1, 2, 6, 8, 11, and 20) and several on one chromosome arm only (3p, 4q, 5q, 7q, 12q, 13q, 15q, 15p, 22q, and Xq). Studies reporting negative association and linkage results are also listed, with the exception of the unlinked markers from genome-wide scans.
