This paper describes an in vivo study of the use of encapsulation to alter lipid bio-accessibility in the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract. The hypothesis that encapsulation would delay the accessibility of lipid in the GI tract was tested using subjects (N = 11) who consumed either 30 g of 13C-labelled sunflower oil encapsulated within 70 g alginate gel particles, or unencapsulated ‘free’ sunflower oil and alginate-only particles (control). Lipid accessibility was determined by the appearance of the 13C label in breath carbon-dioxide (CO2), and the particles behaviour in the GI tract was investigated using non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).  相似文献

Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence was combined with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) to model base-extracted particulate (POM) and dissolved (DOM) organic matter quality in the Neuse River Estuary (NRE), North Carolina, before and after passage of Hurricane Irene in August 2011. Principle components analysis was used to determine that four of the PARAFAC components (C1-C3 and C6) were terrestrial sources to the NRE. One component (C4), prevalent in DOM of nutrient-impacted streams and estuaries and produced in phytoplankton cultures, was enriched in the POM and in surface sediment pore water DOM. One component (C5) was related to recent autochthonous production. Photoexposure of unfiltered Neuse River water caused an increase in slope ratio values (S(R)) which corresponded to an increase in the ratio C2:C3 for DOM, and the production of C4 fluorescence in both POM and DOM. Changes to the relative abundance of C4 in POM and DOM indicated that advection of pore water DOM from surface sediments into overlying waters could increase the autochthonous quality of DOM in shallow microtidal estuaries. Modeling POM and DOM simultaneously with PARAFAC is an informative technique that is applicable to assessments of estuarine water quality.  相似文献

Incorporation of wheat bran has a significant effect on the texture of extruded starchy products. This can be explained by changes in the mechanical parameters of the products. The stress at rupture and elastic modulus of wheat flour-based solid foams, obtained at different extrusion conditions and bran concentration, were measured using a three-point bending test. Both parameters were positively correlated with the foam relative density according to the Gibson–Ashby model. At same relative densities and bran concentration, finer structures with higher density of small cells led to a higher mechanical strength of the foams. The stress at rupture of the unexpanded material was decreased when increasing the bran concentration. Nevertheless, expanded foams with added bran at an intermediate level showed increased mechanical strength. This was attributed to the finer cellular structures obtained. The effect of increasing the bran to a higher concentration on the mechanical properties was depending on the cell wall thickness and bran particle dimensions. At high relative density, the strength of the foams was further increased due to the even finer structures obtained. At low relative density, even though finer structures were also obtained, the stress at rupture of the foams was decreased. This may be explained by the lower cell wall thicknesses and low adhesion properties between bran and starch favoring rupture of the cell walls.  相似文献

We examined psychosocial mechanisms linking recent history of depression and subsequent short-term smoking cessation. Our sample included lower-educated women smokers who registered for a brief cessation intervention (registrant panel; n = 1,198), and a quasicontrol panel not participating in the intervention (population panel; n = 682). Women were surveyed by telephone every 6 months for a period of 2 years, measuring psychosocial variables (motivation, self-efficacy, perceived stress, and social support) and self-reported smoking status (7-day abstinence) at each point. In both panels, smoking rate and self-efficacy were strong independent predictors of subsequent cessation, but recent history of depression (as measured 6 months earlier) was not a significant predictor. However, among only the registrant panel, the effects of recent history of depression were significantly moderated by social support. Recently depressed women who had higher levels of perceived social support were as likely to quit subsequently as women who did not have a recent history of depression. The determinants of successful quitting among lower-educated women differ between those who seek assistance and those who do not.  相似文献

In order to investigate the distributions and speciation of (129)I (and (127)I) in a contaminated F-Area groundwater plume of the Savannah River Site that cannot be explained by simple transport models, soil resuspension experiments simulating surface runoff or stormflow and erosion events were conducted. Results showed that 72-77% of the newly introduced I(-) or IO(3)(-) were irreversibly sequestered into the organic-rich riparian soil, while the rest was transformed by the soil into colloidal and truly dissolved organo-iodine, resulting in (129)I remobilization from the soil greatly exceeding the 1 pCi/L drinking water permit. This contradicts the conventional view that only considers I(-) or IO(3)(-) as the mobile forms. Laboratory iodination experiments indicate that iodine likely covalently binds to aromatic structures of the soil organic matter (SOM). Under very acidic conditions, abiotic iodination of SOM was predominant, whereas under less acidic conditions (pH ≥5), microbial enzymatically assisted iodination of SOM was predominant. The organic-rich soil in the vadose zone of F-Area thus acts primarily as a "sink," but may also behave as a potentially important vector for mobile radioiodine in an on-off carrying mechanism. Generally the riparian zone provides as a natural attenuation zone that greatly reduces radioiodine release.  相似文献

Purpose

To report the symptoms and experiences associated with habitual hydrogel (Hyd) and silicone hydrogel (SiHy) contact lenses (CLs) among young adults and measure their association with age.

Methods

Questionnaire responses from 699 Hyd and 183 SiHy wearers were analyzed to test the association of age with features indicating struggle with CL wear. Prevalence by age was compared between groups with Pearson's chi-square and within groups with Spearman's correlation coefficient.

Results

Hyd and SiHy groups were similar for sex and age distribution. Diagnosis of dry eye increased with age in the Hyd wearers from 10.6% to 21.1% (18-24 vs. 30-35 years), but was approximately 19% in the SiHy wearers across age. Adverse environments caused more discomfort with Hyd than SiHy lenses and Hyd wearers’ discomfort increased with age (smoky (p = 0.0001), dry air environments (p = 0.002), after napping or sleeping (p = 0.004). More Hyd wearers considered discontinuation of CL wear with age, from 4.6% to 14.2% (18-24 vs. 30-35 years, p < 0.04), but the proportion remained steady at 9% across age for SiHy wearers (p = 0.46).

Conclusions

From 18 to 35 years, hydrogel CL wearers reported increasing struggle with CL wear and more negative ratings compared to SiHy wearers. Older hydrogel CL wearers were also more likely to consider discontinuing CL wear compared with younger hydrogel or silicone hydrogel CL wearers in general. Young adult CL wearers should be routinely queried directly about specific aspects of CL wear in order to determine whether different lens types should be prescribed to avoid abandonment of CL wear.  相似文献

The 29Si MAS NMR spectra of the 2H, 4H, 6H, and 3C polytypes of silicon carbide are presented. An attempt is made to correlate differences in the chemical shifts with local atomic environment. The results of the analysis of the spectra of pure polytypes are used as a basic for the interpretation of the spectra of mixed polytypes and a discussion of the crystallinity and impurity levels of different samples. Carbon-13 chemical shifts obtained from spectra of the same polytypes are also tabulated.  相似文献

Embedded quantum cluster and Mott-Littleton techniques are used to study defects in MgO, UO2, and FeO. Through these calculations we illustrate the importance of lattice relaxation and provide evidence that the quantum cluster methodology is both compatible with and complementary to a Born-like ionic model. We discuss the limitations of both methods. Within the Mott-Littleton framework we consider the derivation of effective pair potentials, region sizes, and the application to complex systems. For embedded quantum cluster calculations we investigate basis sets and discuss effective embedding procedures.  相似文献
