Artificial domestication and improvement of the majority of crops began approximately 10,000 years ago, in different parts of the world, to achieve high productivity, good quality, and widespread adaptability. It was initiated from a phenotype-based selection by local farmers and developed to current biotechnology-based breeding to feed over 7 billion people. For most cereal crops, yield relates to grain production, which could be enhanced by increasing grain number and weight. Grain number is typically determined during inflorescence development. Many mutants and genes for inflorescence development have already been characterized in cereal crops. Therefore, optimization of such genes could fine-tune yield-related traits, such as grain number. With the rapidly advancing genome-editing technologies and understanding of yield-related traits, knowledge-driven breeding by design is becoming a reality. This review introduces knowledge about inflorescence yield-related traits in cereal crops, focusing on rice, maize, and wheat. Next, emerging genome-editing technologies and recent studies that apply this technology to engineer crop yield improvement by targeting inflorescence development are reviewed. These approaches promise to usher in a new era of breeding practice.  相似文献

Copper and nickel may be electrodeposited from their ions in solution in nitrate-amide melts at room temperature. In the ammonium nitrate-acetamide-urea melt at 23°C, the reduction to the metal competes with the corrosion reaction at low rates and with the reduction of the ammonium and nitrate ions of the melt at high current densities. Two distinct types of nickel complexes are found in solution. The nickel complex formed by the corrosion reaction is bound by at least one ammonia ligand. Nickel complexes formed by dissolving the halide in the melt show evidence of coordination by less strongly bounding ligands, probably by amides. Similarly, the visible spectra of copper chloride in solution suggest that the cupric ions are coordinated primarily by amides. The copper corrosion reaction produces a complex with a spectra distinctly different from that of cupric chloride in solution. The shift in absorption maxima suggests that the copper complex formed by the corrosion reaction has at least one ammonia ligand in the coordination sphere.  相似文献

Algae-to-biodiesel processes are hindered by high costs and low energy return on investment.1,2. Herein, three foci in research improve algae-to-biodiesel processes by: (1) reducing high installation and energy costs in the CO2 sequestration, cultivation, and harvesting stages; (2) improving oil extraction and biodiesel generation; and (3) increasing utilization of the proteins in lipid-extracted biomass (e.g., for animal feed), as well as the omega-3 fatty acids for nutraceuticals and food supplements. A process is introduced that uses carbon dioxide to aid in all three of these foci. CO2 is used first in the form of microbubbles to lyse algae cell walls, releasing triglyceride oils. CO2 also aids with transesterification of these triglycerides using methanol. At low temperatures (353.15–368.15 K) and intermediate pressures (5–10 MMPa), carbon dioxide causes methanol to dissolve partially in the triglyceride phase and triglyceride to dissolve partially in the methanol phase, increasing the transesterification reaction rate. Due to the nondestructive nature of these processes, other metabolites can also be harvested providing improvements in both mass and economic efficiency with an overall sharp reduction in the modeled price of biodiesel.  相似文献

To investigate whether the alternative text entry system, Dasher, is useful to physically and intellectually disabled students when controlled by a brain–computer interface (BCI) a new software tool was developed to allow subjects to type words onto a computer screen via Dasher using their thoughts. A case study approach was adopted. Subjects were selected based on their suitability for the experiment, and the potential benefit to them of this system, by their head teacher. Subjects entered literacy level-matched phrases onto a computer using QWERTY keyboard, Dasher-mouse and Dasher-BCI. A researcher recorded qualitative and quantitative data, including characters entered per minute and their system preferences. Informed written consent was given for seven subjects to participate (aged 14–19 years, five male, with a range of physical and intellectual disabilities). After a short training period, all subjects had some degree of control over the Dasher-BCI system. With regard to typing speed, Dasher-BCI performed relatively poorly (3.9 ± 1.5 characters per minute), and QWERTY keyboard performed the best (31.9 ± 21.9 characters per minute). Dasher-BCI was the most preferred method. Areas of weakness in Dasher and the BCI hardware were highlighted and suggestions for improvement given. BCI-based text entry is not yet ready to compete with more established methods for students with combined cognitive and physical disabilities. Although underpowered, this study suggests that for people whose predominant disability is physical (cerebral palsy), BCI technology shows great potential as a viable text entry alternative. Suggestions for further research are discussed.  相似文献

Urbanisation results in changes to runoff behaviour which, if not addressed, inevitably degrade receiving waters. To date, most stormwater management has focussed on the streetscape and public open space. Given that much of the catchment imperviousness is located on private land, we developed and tested a novel economic instrument (a uniform price auction) for encouraging allotment-scale stormwater retention. We evaluated bids using an integrated environmental benefit index (EBI), based on the ability of the proposed works to reduce runoff frequency, pollutant loads and to reduce potable water demand. The uniform price auction resulted in 1.4 ha of impervious areas being effectively 'disconnected' from the stormwater system. The EBI provided an objective and transparent method of comparing bids, which varied in the type of works proposed (e.g. rainwater tank, rain-garden), the cost and the resulting environmental benefit. Whilst the pilot auction was a success, the public subsidy of works undertaken was around 85%, meaning that property owners a relatively small private benefit in the works. Future auction rounds will be revised to (i) test an EBI which is more focussed on the protection of streams (assessing changes to runoff frequency, baseflow volumes and water quality) and (ii) provide an auction process which is simpler to understand, and provides greater practical support for landholders who wish to undertake works.  相似文献

Biofiltration systems are widely used to mitigate the impacts of stormwater on receiving waters, however their long-term capacity to retain heavy metals has not previously been assessed. Accelerated-dosing laboratory experiments were used to assess the likelihood of breakthrough occurring for three different types of soil-based filter media that are commonly used in stormwater biofilters. In all cases, breakthrough of zinc (Zn) was observed, but not of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and lead (Pb). If biofiltration systems are sized so that they are large relative to their catchment (at least 2-3% of its area) or have a deep filter layer (at least 0.5 m deep), then breakthrough will not occur for at least ten years and probably longer. However, after the equivalent of 12-15 years of operation, Cd, Cu and Zn had accumulated in the filter media to levels that exceeded human health and/or ecological guidelines. Further, depending on the design, it is possible that spent filter media may be classified as contaminated soil and thus require special disposal.  相似文献
