The “end of the vortex” (EoV) phenomenon, a flow instability that plays a crucial role in cyclone design and operation is studied in this article. In the experimental part of the study, tests were carried out to understand the origin and nature of the EoV and to study the effects of the flowrate through, and the length of, the cylindrical cyclone on the EoV. In the theoretical part, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, in agreement with the geometrical configurations and operating conditions used in the present and earlier experimental studies, were constructed and investigated. Three‐dimensional simulations were carried out using the large eddy turbulence model with the commercial CFD package Star‐CD. Bending of the vortex core to the wall of the vessel and its precessional motion, constituting the phenomenon of the EoV, was observed in the simulations in most geometries. The results are in a good agreement not only with the present experimental results but also with previous experimental observations. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2012  相似文献

This study explores the feasibility of objective and ubiquitous stress assessment. 25 post-traumatic stress disorder patients participated in a controlled storytelling (ST) study and an ecologically valid reliving (RL) study. The two studies were meant to represent an early and a late therapy session, and each consisted of a "happy" and a "stress triggering" part. Two instruments were chosen to assess the stress level of the patients at various point in time during therapy: (i) speech, used as an objective and ubiquitous stress indicator and (ii) the subjective unit of distress (SUD), a clinically validated Likert scale. In total, 13 statistical parameters were derived from each of five speech features: amplitude, zero-crossings, power, high-frequency power, and pitch. To model the emotional state of the patients, 28 parameters were selected from this set by means of a linear regression model and, subsequently, compressed into 11 principal components. The SUD and speech model were cross-validated, using 3 machine learning algorithms. Between 90% (2 SUD levels) and 39% (10 SUD levels) correct classification was achieved. The two sessions could be discriminated in 89% (for ST) and 77% (for RL) of the cases. This report fills a gap between laboratory and clinical studies, and its results emphasize the usefulness of Computer Aided Diagnostics (CAD) for mental health care.  相似文献

Soil and surface water along roads are exposed to pollution from motorways. The main pollutants are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), mineral oil, heavy metals and salt. These pollutants originate from vehicles (fuel, wires, leakage), wear and degradation of road surfaces and road furniture (i.e. crash barriers) and the application of de-icing salts. Runoff, vehicle spray and dry deposition disperse these contaminants into the soft shoulder (verges) of the roads and surface water to a measurable distance of about 50 up to more then 150 m from the road. Despite many monitoring programs, little is known about the risks of this diffuse pollution for soil and water quality and the geochemical and physical factors which determine these risks. Also little is known about the effects of possible measures. Therefore, extensive research has been carried out at two local motorways. Specific measurements on runoff, vehicle spray and effects of measures have been carried out for one year (13 months). This resulted in several new insights. The pollutants appear to adsorb effectively to natural soils. In vulnerable areas groundwater can be protected by adjusting the policy to removing the contaminated upper topsoil of the verges. Discharges of runoff into local surface water are not recommended.  相似文献

We present a quantitative analysis of the loss of electroluminescence in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on poly[2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) due to the combination of non-radiative trap-assisted recombination and exciton quenching at the metallic cathode. It is demonstrated that for an MEH-PPV LED the biggest efficiency loss, up to 45%, arises from extrinsic non-radiative recombination via electron traps. The loss caused by exciton quenching at the cathode proves only to be significant for devices thinner than 100 nm. Removal of electron traps by purification is expected to enhance the efficiency of polymer LEDs by more than a factor of two.  相似文献

Originally, oils were not refined but with the introduction of solvent extraction, refining became necessary. Crude cottonseed oil was refined by treating the oil with caustic soda and the same process was used for all other oils that needed refining. The subsequent introduction of centrifugal separators converted the original batch process into a continuous process. Degumming was introduced to obtain lecithin but limited to soya bean oil. Physical refining was introduced for high acidity oils like palm oil after the oil had been degummed to low residual phosphorus levels in the dry degumming process, in which the oil is first of all treated with an acid and then with bleaching earth. In Europe, further degumming processes were developed that allowed seed oil to be physically refined and later phospholipase enzymes were introduced to reduce oil retention by the gums and improve oil yield. Given these various oil purification processes, the refiner must decide which process to use for which oil in which circumstances. The paper provides a survey of what to do and when. It also discusses several topics that require further investigation and development.  相似文献

Within a IUPAC study, melt processing, mechanical, and fatigue crack growth properties of blends of polyamide 6 (PA 6) and poly(acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene) (ABS) were investigated. We focused on the influence of reactive compatibilization on blend properties using a styrene–acrylonitrile–maleic anhydride random terpolymer (SANMA). Two series of PA 6/ABS blends with 30 wt % PA 6 and 70 wt % PA 6, respectively, were prepared with varying amounts of SANMA. Our experiments revealed that the morphology of the matrix (PA 6 or ABS) strongly affects the blend properties. The viscosity of PA 6/ABS blends monotonically increases with SANMA concentration because of the formation of high‐molecular weight graft copolymers. The extrudate swell of the blends was much larger than that of neat PA 6 and ABS and decreased with increasing SANMA concentrations at a constant extrusion pressure. This observation can be explained by the effect of the capillary number. The fracture resistance of these blends, including specific work to break and impact strength, is lower than that of PA 6 or ABS alone, but increases with SANMA concentration. This effect is most strongly pronounced for blends with 70 wt % PA 6. Fatigue crack growth experiments showed that the addition of 1–2 wt % SANMA enhances the resistance against crack propagation for ABS‐based blends. The correlation between blend composition, morphology and processing/end‐use properties of reactively compatibilized PA 6/ABS blends is discussed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Filler materials are part and parcel for the adjustment of adhesives, in particular, their rheological and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the thermal stability of adhesives can be positively influenced by the addition of an expedient filler, with inorganic types common practice in most cases. In this study, one‐component moisture‐curing polyurethane adhesives for engineered wood products based on isocyanate prepolymers with different polymer‐filled polyether polyols were investigated with regard to the filler's potential to increase the thermal stability of bonded wood joints. The property changes due to the addition of fillers were determined by means of mechanical tests on bonded wood joints and on pure adhesive films at different temperatures up to 200°C. Additional analyses by atomic force and environmental scanning electron microscopy advanced the understanding of the effects of the filler. The tested organic fillers, styrene acrylonitrile, a polyurea dispersion, and polyamide, caused increases in the cohesive strength and stiffness over the whole temperature range. However, the selected filler type was hardly important with regard to the tensile shear strength of the bonded wood joints at high temperatures, although the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the adhesive films differed over a wide range. Prepolymers with a lower initial strength and stiffness resulted in worse cohesion, in particular, at high temperatures. This disadvantage, however, could be compensated by means of the filler material. Ultimately, the addition of filler material resulted in optimized adhesive properties only in a well‐balanced combination with the prepolymer used. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. By extending the response function approach developed in nonlinear optics, we analytically derive an expression for the non-Markovianity in the time evolution of a system in contact with a quantum mechanical bath, and find a close connection with the directly observable nonlinear optical response. The result indicates that memory in the bath-induced fluctuations rather than in the dissipation causes non-Markovianity. Initial correlations between states of the system and the bath are shown to be essential for a correct understanding of the non-Markovianity. These correlations are included in our treatment through a preparation function.  相似文献
