Unemployment and psychological health among Hong Kong Chinese women

An immediately inducible gene by gonadotropin was isolated from rat ovaries primed with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) by using a subtraction cloning procedure. Homology analysis revealed that the gene is a rat homologue of scavenger receptor class B-I, which was recently identified as a specific receptor for high density lipoprotein (HDL). The structure of rat SRBI was determined by nucleotide sequence analysis of full-length cDNAs for SRBI. Northern blot analysis revealed that rat SRBI mRNA levels were rapidly and strongly increased within 3 h by the injection of PMSG. In situ hybridization study revealed that SRBI mRNA was strongly induced in theca interna cells of immature rat ovary stimulated with 30 IU of PMSG for 6 h. SRBI mRNA expression was also observed in corpora lutea of the adult rat ovary. These findings indicate that expression of SRBI mRNA is restricted to and induced in the ovarian steroidogenic cell types where cholesterol is used as a substrate for synthesis of steroid hormones. Our data strongly suggest that SRBI may play a significant role in the ovarian steroidogenesis by mediating selective uptake of cholesterol from HDL to ovarian theca interna cells or to corpus luteum.     

Two outbreaks of salmonellosis caused by Salmonella indiana. A survey of the European summit outbreak and its consequences

This paper discusses the outbreak of salmonellosis caused by Salmonella indiana during the European Summit Conference in Maastricht on 23 and 24 March 1981. It is estimated that 600–700 of the 1000–1200 exposed persons became ill. The cause of the outbreak was probably a salad base which was used in various snacks and cold dishes. Serious errors were made during preparation of this salad base which allowed the S. indiana present in the product to multiply on a large scale (10⁷ per gram). The original source of the S. indiana was never established. The economic consequences of the outbreak were considerable. Medical costs were estimated at F1.40 000, costs due to sick leaves between Fl.200 000 and F1.500 000 and economic loss to the catering firm at approximately F1.500 000 (exchange rate 1981: U.S.$1 = Fl.2.33). The time devoted to investigating the outbreak by government authorities was estimated at 150 man-days. On Saturday, 28 March, the company which had supplied the food for the European Summit Conference provided the catering for a family dinner and a cold buffet. As a precaution all the preparations were supervised by an inspector from the Food Inspection Service. In spite of this, 31 people again fell victim to salmonellosis caused by S. indiana. Of 30 food samples taken during preparation of the meals, 5 were positive for S. indiana. The aerobic and Enterobacteriaceae plate counts were however very low ( < 10⁴ and < 10² per gram, respectively)as were the infective doses, owing to very stringent control of timing and temperature before consumption. An investigation into conditions in the kitchen showed that although it looked clean it was highly contaminated with S. indiana; 16 of the 70 environmental samples taken were positive for S. indiana. Cross contamination was therefore inevitable. It is presumed that the kitchen became contaminated whilst the infected salad base was being prepared and added to various dishes during the European Summit Conference. The serious symptoms displayed by the victims of the Summit outbreak and the low infective doses in the second outbreak suggest that the S. Indiana involved was more virulent than usual for Salmonella.     

Average interconnection delay estimation for on-FPGA communication links

A new method is presented and an analytical expression is derived for average interconnection delay estimation. This method is directly applicable to predicting the average delay for high-bandwidth communication links implemented on FPGAs. The theoretical results are compared with the measured data from the actual circuits and an average error of 4.6% is reported.

Thermal conductivity of highly oriented polyethylene

We have measured the thermal conductivity of oriented polyethylene both along and perpendicular to the draw direction for draw ratio λ between 1–25 and in the temperature range of 120 to 320K. The results for λ ? 5 have been analysed in terms of the modified Maxwell model while the further increase of thermal conductivity along the draw direction at higher λ has been explained by the Takayanagi model. The Young's modulus and thermal conductivity along the draw direction for the sample with λ = 25 were found to be 64 GN/m² (at 220K) and 140 mW/cm K (at 300K), respectively, which are extremely high values for polymers. This material, which is a good electrical insulator and yet has a high thermal conductivity, may be useful in electrical applications requiring large dissipation of heat.     

Circularly polarised microstrip antenna array using proximitycoupled feed

A 2×2 circularly polarised (CP) microstrip antenna array using a proximity coupled feed and sequential rotation is described. As compared with a previously presented single-element circularly polarised microstrip antenna with a cross-slot, the new array achieves a much wider impedance bandwidth of 11.18% and has an axial ratio bandwidth of 4.1%. Mutual impedance of hemispherical dielectric resonator antennas

The mutual coupling between two hemispherical dielectric resonator antennas is studied analytically. The radiation fields of the antennas are derived rigorously from a Green's function. The mutual impedance is then determined from a reaction formula. Comparison between theory and experiment is presented     

Retargeting a hardware compiler using protocol converters

We show how to retarget a compiler for occam-like programs from generating two-phase delay-insensitive circuits to generating four-phase speed independent circuits. The specifications of the two-phase circuit elements for our compiler are used to produce a set of equivalent specifications for four-phase circuit elements using a set of protocol converters. Automatic tools have been used in checking that our four-phase implementations satisfy their specifications.     

Mechanical properties of Zr-3Sn-1Mo-1Nb alloy at various temperatures

The deformation characteristics of Zr-3Sn-1Mo-1Nb alloy have been investigated by tensile testing in the temperature range 300–1000 K at a constant crosshead speed corresponding to the strain rate of 6.7×10^–5s^–1. At lower temperatures, below about 500 K, the flow stress of the sample decreased with increasing temperature, whereas an inverse temperature dependence of the yield stress was found at temperatures between 500 and 700 K. At higher temperatures, above 700 K, the normal dependence of the yield stress on temperature was again observed. The maximum stress exhibited a similar temperature dependence. At higher temperature, serrations were found on the flow stress curves at the very beginning of deformation. The main deformation mechanisms are assumed to be a locking-unlocking mechanism connected with cross-slipping.
