A strategy for sampling on a sphere applied to 3D selective RF pulse design

Conventional constant angular velocity sampling of the surface of a sphere results in a higher sampling density near the two poles relative to the equatorial region. More samples, and hence longer sampling time, are required to achieve a given sampling density in the equatorial region when compared with uniform sampling. This paper presents a simple expression for a continuous sample path through a nearly uniform distribution of points on the surface of a sphere. Sampling of concentric spherical shells in k-space with the new strategy is used to design 3D selective inversion and spin-echo pulses. These new 3D selective pulses have been implemented and verified experimentally.     

PAK4, a novel effector for Cdc42Hs, is implicated in the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton and in the formation of filopodia

The GTPases Rac and Cdc42Hs control diverse cellular functions. In addition to being mediators of intracellular signaling cascades, they have important roles in cell morphogenesis and mitogenesis. We have identified a novel PAK-related kinase, PAK4, as a new effector molecule for Cdc42Hs. PAK4 interacts only with the activated form of Cdc42Hs through its GTPase-binding domain (GBD). Co-expression of PAK4 and the constitutively active Cdc42HsV12 causes the redistribution of PAK4 to the brefeldin A-sensitive compartment of the Golgi membrane and the subsequent induction of filopodia and actin polymerization. Importantly, the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton is dependent on PAK4 kinase activity and on its interaction with Cdc42Hs. Thus, unlike other members of the PAK family, PAK4 provides a novel link between Cdc42Hs and the actin cytoskeleton. The cellular locations of PAK4 and Cdc42Hs suggest a role for the Golgi in cell morphogenesis.     

Tissue actions of bipolar scissors compared with monopolar devices

OBJECTIVES: To establish whether bipolar scissors offer equivalent cutting performance compared with monopolar scissors and to compare extent of thermal coagulation injury using two electrosurgical generators. DESIGN: Eighteen female rabbits' uterine horns were cut using controlled velocity at several different wattages with either bipolar or monopolar scissors. The specimens were examined microscopically and zones of thermal necrosis were measured using a stage micrometer against a 1 mm standard. RESULTS: Bipolar scissors cut equally well compared with monopolar scissors and showed significantly less thermal injury. When coupled to a constant voltage generator both the bipolar and monopolar scissors performed better. CONCLUSION: Bipolar scissors offer the surgeon significant safety advantages and equivalent or better performance compared with monopolar scissors when used for laparoscopic surgery.
