We investigate the role of human mobility as a driver for long-range spreading of cholera infections, which primarily propagate through hydrologically controlled ecological corridors. Our aim is to build a spatially explicit model of a disease epidemic, which is relevant to both social and scientific issues. We present a two-layer network model that accounts for the interplay between epidemiological dynamics, hydrological transport and long-distance dissemination of the pathogen Vibrio cholerae owing to host movement, described here by means of a gravity-model approach. We test our model against epidemiological data recorded during the extensive cholera outbreak occurred in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa during 2000–2001. We show that long-range human movement is fundamental in quantifying otherwise unexplained inter-catchment transport of V. cholerae, thus playing a key role in the formation of regional patterns of cholera epidemics. We also show quantitatively how heterogeneously distributed drinking water supplies and sanitation conditions may affect large-scale cholera transmission, and analyse the effects of different sanitation policies.  相似文献

The mesoscopic structure of numerous samples of Archaic Ionian Cups found in different archaeological sites of Sicily was non-invasively investigated by means of small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Similar values of the mesoscopic structural parameters, radius of gyration and fractal dimension of the interfaces of the investigated potteries, testify a similar manufacturing technique. Many samples showed mesoscopic planar anisotropy probably due to some external mechanical stress during forging. Similar porosity was found for all the studied ceramics and appeared in general agreement with the Hg porosimetry values. Finally, the firing temperatures were estimated by comparison with raw materials fired under controlled conditions.  相似文献

Idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury (DILI) caused by xenobiotics (drugs, herbals and dietary supplements) presents with a range of both phenotypes and severity, from acute hepatitis indistinguishable of viral hepatitis to autoimmune syndromes, steatosis or rare chronic vascular syndromes, and from asymptomatic liver test abnormalities to acute liver failure. DILI pathogenesis is complex, depending on the interaction of drug physicochemical properties and host factors. The awareness of risk factors for DILI is arising from the analysis of large databases of DILI cases included in Registries and Consortia networks around the world. These networks are also enabling in-depth phenotyping with the identification of predictors for severe outcome, including acute liver failure and mortality/liver transplantation. Genome wide association studies taking advantage of these large cohorts have identified several alleles from the major histocompatibility complex system indicating a fundamental role of the adaptive immune system in DILI pathogenesis. Correct case definition and characterization is crucial for appropriate phenotyping, which in turn will strengthen sample collection for genotypic and future biomarkers studies.  相似文献

Silver-doped indium hydroxide In(1-x)(OH)3:xAg (with x = 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 mol%) of Ag nanoparticles were synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MAH) method at 140°C for 30 minutes. These nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and optical diffuse reflectance. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra were acquired with a 350 nm beam of a krypton ion laser as an excitation source. The antibacterial activities of the samples were evaluated against gram negative Escherichia coli bacteria and gram positive Staphylococcus aureus bacteria using the disc diffusion method. The results showed that all diffraction peaks present in XRD patterns could be indexed to the cubic lattice related to the In(OH)3 phase. Broadband photoluminescence behavior in visible range spectra was observed for all samples with a maximum peak centered in the blue and green regions. The antibacterial activities showed that In(1-x)(OH)3: xAg nanoparticles have a promising bactericide that can be used for deactivating microbes.  相似文献
