Circulating fluidized beds (CFBs) are used widely in the chemical industry. Knowing or estimating the bed height in the standpipe and the solids circulation rate are essential for effective control of the system. This paper incorporates a 2-region model to calculate the bed height in the standpipe with a Kalman filter algorithm to estimate the solids circulation rate (SCR). Simulations of both the standpipe bed height and SCR were compared with experimental data and shown to give good agreement.
In addition, a neural network method was applied to model the entire cold flow CFB system and measured data sets were used to train the neurons of the network. Finally, a linear controller was applied to control both the bed height and solids circulation rate to desired set points. Simulations were performed for both positive and negative step inputs for both variables and satisfactory control was demonstrated using this controller in combination with the neutral network and Kalman estimator. 相似文献

Immersive virtual environments with life-like interaction capabilities can provide a high fidelity view of the virtual world
and seamless interaction methods to the user. High demanding requirements, however, raise many challenges in the development
of sensing technologies and display systems. The focus of this study is on improving the performance of human–computer interaction
by rendering optimizations guided by head pose estimates and their uncertainties. This work is part of a larger study currently
being under investigation at NASA Ames, called “Virtual GloveboX” (VGX). VGX is a virtual simulator that aims to provide advanced
training and simulation capabilities for astronauts to perform precise biological experiments in a glovebox aboard the International
Space Station (ISS). Our objective is to enhance the virtual experience by incorporating information about the user’s viewing
direction into the rendering process. In our system, viewing direction is approximated by estimating head orientation using
markers placed on a pair of polarized eye-glasses. Using eye-glasses does not pose any constraints in our operational environment
since they are an integral part of a stereo display used in VGX. During rendering, perceptual level of detail methods are
coupled with head-pose estimation to improve the visual experience. A key contribution of our work is incorporating head pose
estimation uncertainties into the level of detail computations to account for head pose estimation errors. Subject tests designed
to quantify user satisfaction under different modes of operation indicate that incorporating uncertainty information during

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the effect of cognitive load on guidance of visual attention. BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that cognitive load can undermine driving performance, particularly drivers' ability to detect safety-critical events. Cognitive load combined with the loss of exogenous cues, which can occur when the driver briefly glances away from the roadway, may be particularly detrimental. METHOD: In each of two experiments, twelve participants engaged in an auditory task while performing a change detection task. A change blindness paradigm was implemented to mask exogenous cues by periodically blanking the screen in a driving simulator while a change occurred. Performance measures included participants' sensitivity to vehicle changes and confidence in detecting them. RESULTS: Cognitive load uniformly diminished participants' sensitivity and confidence, independent of safety relevance or lack of exogenous cues. Periodic blanking, which simulated glances away from the road-way, undermined change detection to a greater degree than did cognitive load; however, drivers' confidence in their ability to detect changes was diminished more by cognitive load than by periodic blanking. CONCLUSION: Cognitive load and short glances away from the road are additive in their tendency to increase the likelihood of drivers missing safety-critical events. APPLICATION: This study demonstrates the need to consider the combined consequence of cognitive load and brief glances away from the road in the design of emerging in-vehicle devices and the need to provide drivers with better feedback regarding these consequences. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: An experiment was conducted to assess the effects of distraction mitigation strategies on drivers' performance and productivity while engaged in an in-vehicle information system task. BACKGROUND: Previous studies show that in-vehicle tasks undermine driver safety and there is a need to mitigate driver distraction. METHOD: An advising strategy that alerts drivers to potential dangers and a locking strategy that prevents the driver from continuing the distracting task were presented to 16 middle-aged and 12 older drivers in a driving simulator in two modes (auditory, visual) and two road conditions (curves, braking events). RESULTS: Distraction was a problem for both age groups. Visual distractions were more detrimental than auditory ones for curve negotiation, as depicted by more erratic steering, F (6, 155) = 26.76, p < .05. Drivers did brake more abruptly under auditory distractions, but this effect was mitigated by both the advising, t (155) = 8.37, p < .05, and locking strategies, t (155) = 8.49, p < .05. The locking strategy also resulted in longer minimum time to collision for middle-aged drivers engaged in visual distractions, F (6, 138) = 2.43, p < .05. CONCLUSIONS: Adaptive interfaces can reduce abrupt braking on curve entries resulting from auditory distractions and can also improve the braking response for distracted drivers. APPLICATION: These strategies can be incorporated into existing in-vehicle systems, thus mitigating the effects of distraction and improving driver performance. 相似文献

This paper reports on the elicitation of requirements for Virtual Actors in Collaborative Virtual Learning Environments (CVLEs). The methodological approach followed involves the phased development of a series of learning environments which are observed in use by parents, children and teachers. The focus of study is on the interactivity and social communication issues that arise in the learning situation. The research uses as its case study the work of the Manchester Museum Education Service with children at Key Stage Level 2 (9–11 years old) of the National Curriculum. The particular learning situation is based on senet, an ancient Egyptian board game from the Museum’s collection of artefacts from the pyramid builders’ town of Kahun. Results are presented of the first phase prototype, a single display groupware system where interactions take place face-to-face in the ‘real-world’ external to the environment. Results are also presented of the second phase prototype, a multi-user groupware environment in which the users are remotely located and interaction is mainly internal to the environment. The paper discusses how the results from these two phases are being used to establish requirements for a CVLE to be developed in the third phase of research. 相似文献

There is a growing class of elementary particle detectors, large-water ?erenkov detectors, that have a body of water (thousands of tons) as a sensitive medium. Particles are detected when they interact with the water and produce ?erenkov light, so detection efficiency relies on the transparency of the water. These detectors are active typically for many years, so biological activity (primarily bacterial growth) is one of the means by which the transparency of the water may be reduced. We present the results of a measurement of light scattering and absorption from a population of Escherichia coli in water, which is used as a model for bacteria in general. One can separate the scattering and absorption by varying the refractive index of the medium by using a solute of high molecular weight. We show that the results can be understood simply in terms of light scattering from small spheres (radius ≈ wavelength) with an effective refractive index, n(b), plus a small amount of absorption in the ultraviolet. Nanoparticle (NP) supra-assembly offers unique opportunities to tune macroscopic hydrogels’ mechanical strength, material degradation, and drug delivery properties. Here, synthetic, reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive NPs are physically cross-linked with hyaluronic acid (HA) through guest-host chemistry to create shear-thinning NP/HA hydrogels. A library of triblock copolymers composed of poly(propylene sulfide)-b-poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide)-b-poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide-co-N-(1-adamantyl)acrylamide) are synthesized with varied triblock architectures and adamantane grafting densities and then self-assembled into NPs displaying adamantane on their surface. Self-assembled NPs are mixed with β-cyclodextrin grafted HA to yield eighteen NP/HA hydrogel formulations. The NP/HA hydrogel platform demonstrates superior mechanical strength to HA-only hydrogels, susceptibility to oxidative/enzymatic degradation, and inherent cell-protective, antioxidant function. The performance of NP/HA hydrogels is shown to be affected by triblock architecture, guest/host grafting densities, and HA composition. In particular, the length of the hydrophilic second block and adamantane grafting density of self-assembled NPs significantly impacts hydrogel mechanical properties and shear-thinning behavior, while ROS-reactivity of poly(propylene sulfide) protects cells from cytotoxic ROS and reduces oxidative degradation of HA compared to HA-only hydrogels. This study provides insight into polymer structure-function considerations for designing hybrid NP/HA hydrogels and identifies antioxidant, shear-thinning hydrogels as promising injectable delivery platforms for small molecule drugs and therapeutic cells. 相似文献
