It is shown that the conductivity of a SnO2 gas sensor depends on the concentration of CO and H2O in the atmosphere n which it is placed. The experimental data can be explained in a consistent manner by hypothesizing that 1) adsorbed oxygen depletes the surface electron concentration and therefore decreases the conductivity; 2) adsorbed water causes electrons to accumulate at the surface and therefore increases the conductivity; 3) CO increases the conductivity by removing adsorbed oxygen by reacting with it to form CO2; and 4) adsorbed water catalyzes the CO to CO2 reaction.  相似文献

Performed lateral hypothalamic (LH) lesions in 23 male Holtzman albino rats, resulting in a decline to 90% body weight (BW) compared to 14 controls. Thereafter, throughout a 9-wk observation period, BW was maintained at this chronically reduced level. Quinine adulteration of the diet resulted in an additional 12.8% decline in the level of maintained BW. Intact Ss fed the same quinine-adulterated diet likewise reduced and maintained BW at levels 12.3% below other controls fed an unadulterated diet. It is concluded that LH-lesioned male rats are not dependent upon the sensory qualities of an adlib diet to a degree differing from intact animals. The Australia SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) is a new telescope under development as a world-class high-dynamic-range wide-field-of-view survey instrument. It will utilize focal plane phased array feeds on the 36 12-m antennas that will compose the array. The large amounts of data present a huge computing challenge, and ASKAP will store data products in an archive after near real-time pipeline processing. This powerful instrument will be deployed at a new radio-quiet observatory, the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory in the midwest region of Western Australia, to enable sensitive surveys of the entire sky to address some of the big questions in contemporary physics. As a pathfinder for the SKA, ASKAP will demonstrate field of view enhancement and computing/processing technology as well as the operation of a large-scale radio array in a remote and radio-quiet region of Australia.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of milking frequency on the phagocytosis and respiratory burst activity of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and monocytes of primiparous and multiparous cows under 2 nutritional management regimens during early lactation. At calving, 12 primiparous and 12 multiparous cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments, in which animals were milked once (OAD) or twice a day at a high or low nutritional level. Blood samples were taken 1 to 7 d before calving (prepartum) and 1 to 7, 14 to 21, and 42 to 49 d postpartum. Phagocytic and oxidative burst activity of PMN and monocytes were determined in whole blood and analyzed separately by flow cytometry. Once-a-day milking reduced significantly the percentage of phagocytic PMN and tended to decrease the number of bacteria ingested by these cells. The percentage of oxidative burst positive cells and overall respiratory burst activity of monocytes also tended to be reduced by OAD milking. The reduction of oxidative burst activity of monocytes was more pronounced 1 to 7 d postpartum compared with the prepartum sample and other postpartum samples. Oxidative burst activity of PMN and monocytes of multiparous cows was impaired compared with primiparous cows. The percentage of oxidative burst positive monocytes from multiparous cows was reduced prepartum and also 1 to 7 d postpartum. Once-a-day milking reduced the mean respiratory burst activity of PMN from primiparous cows to levels similar to that of multiparous cows. Therefore, an OAD milking regimen reduces phagocytic activity of PMN and monocytes and would be detrimental for the immune system in high-yielding dairy cows during early lactation.  相似文献

This study compared locomotion, hoof health, and lameness of dairy cows confined in either indoor free stalls (FS) or 1 of 3 out-wintering pad (OWP) designs. Out-wintering pad treatments were 1) uncovered OWP with a concrete feed apron (UP); 2) covered OWP with a concrete feed apron (CO); and 3) uncovered OWP on top of which grass was ensiled so that the cows could self-feed (SP). Cows were assigned to treatment at drying off using a randomized complete block design. They remained on treatment until calving, when they were turned out to pasture. Sole lesions, heel erosion, dermatitis, and claw hardness on both hind feet were scored according to severity at assignment to treatment, at calving, and 9 and 14 wk postpartum. Locomotion score was recorded weekly after calving for 14 wk. Incidence of clinical lameness was recorded during the treatment period and in the subsequent lactation. Treatment had no effect on sole lesion score, but scores increased over time (calving = 5.5 ± 1.3, wk 9 = 10.8 ± 1.3, wk 14 = 14.2 ± 1.3, mean ± SE). Self-fed cows had higher heel erosion scores (6.4 ± 0.4) than FS and CO cows (4.7 ± 0.4 and 4.7 ± 0.4, respectively) at calving. Cows on SP had the highest dermatitis scores [1.14 (0-2) mean (interquartile range)] and FS cows the lowest [0.51 (0-0)]. Hooves were hardest at assignment to treatment (43.9 ± 0.6) with a significant reduction in hardness at calving (40.0 ± 0.6). The hooves of CO cows were harder than those of SP and UP cows (CO = 43.3 ± 0.7, SP = 41.7 ± 0.7, UP = 41.7 ± 0.7, Shore D scale). There was no treatment effect on locomotion scores or lameness incidence. Higher dermatitis scores and heel erosion in SP may be due to exposure to excreta and moisture, because the SP treatment had no manure removal system at the feed face. In FS, the alleys and the feed face were cleaned regularly by automatic scraper, explaining the lower dermatitis scores recorded indoors. Providing shelter for OWP likely reduced exposure to environmental moisture. This ensured that the hooves of CO cows remained as hard as those of FS cows. Low correlations between hardness and pathologies indicate that other factors are involved in the development of hoof pathologies. Confining dry dairy cows on OWP does not increase locomotion scores or lameness incidence.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of tumbling at different post-mortem times on the proteolytic features and quality attributes of beef loins (M. longissimus lumborum). Loins (n = 12) were cut into 4 sections and assigned to tumbling at 1, 6 or 11 days post-mortem or non-tumbled control. Upon tumbling, additional ageing was applied to a common post-mortem time of 16 days. In general, tumbling had no considerable impacts on water-holding ability of samples. Tumbling resulted in an immediate decrease in shear force values (WBSF) of beef samples. Tumbling at 1 day post-mortem with no ageing had similar WBSF compared to the non-tumbled controls at 16 days (P > 0.05). With ageing, tumbling increased amounts of protein degradation, myofibrillar fragmentation and calpain-1 autolysis of samples. These results suggest that early post-mortem tumbling coupled with ageing can synergistically impact the tenderness development of beef loins and shorten the necessary ageing period.  相似文献

Hairdressers are exposed to particulate matter (PM), a known air pollutant linked to adverse health effects. Still, studies on occupational PM exposures in hair salons are sparse. We characterized indoor air PM concentrations in three salons primarily serving an African/African American (AA) clientele, and three Dominican salons primarily serving a Latino clientele. We also assessed the performance of low-cost sensors (uRAD, Flow, AirVisual) by comparing them to high-end sensors (DustTrak) to conduct air monitoring in each salon over 3 days to quantify work shift concentrations of PM2.5, respirable PM (RPM), and PM10. We observed high spatial and temporal variability in 30-min time-weighted average (TWA) RPM concentrations (0.18–5518 μg/m3). Readings for the uRAD and AirVisual sensors were highly correlated with the DustTrak (R2 = 0.90–0.99). RPM 8-hour TWAs ranged from 18 to 383 µg/m3 for AA salons, and 9–2115 µg/m3 for Dominican salons. Upper 95th percentiles of daily RPM exposures ranged from 439 to 2669 µg/m3. The overall range of 30-min TWA PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations was 0.13–5497 and 0.36-,541 μg/m3, respectively. Findings suggest that hairdressers could be overexposed to RPM during an 8-hour shift. Additional comprehensive monitoring studies are warranted to further characterize temporal and spatial variability of PM exposures in this understudied occupational population.  相似文献

ZnSe layers have been grown by a low temperature (65 °C) electrochemical deposition technique in an aqueous medium. The resulting thin films have been characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell for determination of the bulk properties and electrical conductivity type. XRD patterns indicate the growth of ZnSe layers with (1 1 1) as the preferred orientation. PEC studies show p-type semiconducting properties for the as deposited layers and n-type ZnSe can be produced by appropriate doping. Annealing at 250 °C for 15 min improves the crystallinity of the layers and the photoresponse of the ZnSe/electrolyte junction. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers  相似文献
