This work aimed at developing a thin and water‐resistant food‐grade poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH)‐based matrix able to swell when in contact with high moisture content food products without rupturing to release antimicrobial agents onto the food surface. This film was prepared by blending PVOH and 7.20% (wt/wt of PVOH) of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with citric acid as crosslinking agent. The film‐forming solution was then casted onto a flat surface and the obtained film was 60 μm in thickness and showed a good transparency (close to T = 100%) in the visible region (400 to 700 nm). After immersion in water for 72 h at room temperature, the crosslinked matrix loses only 19.2% of its original weight (the percentage includes the amount of unreacted crosslinking agent, antimicrobial in itself). Water content, degree of swelling, and crosslinking density of the film prove that the presence of PEG diminishes the hydrophilic behavior of the material. Also the mechanical properties of the wet and dry film were assessed. Alongside this, 2.5% (wt/wt of dry film) of grapefruit seed extract (GSE), an antimicrobial agent, was added to the film‐forming solution just before casting and the ability of the plastic matrix to release the additive was then evaluated in vitro against 2 GSE‐susceptible microorganisms, Salmonella enteritidis and Listeria innocua. The results indicate that the developed matrix may be a promising food‐grade material for the incorporation of active substances.  相似文献

The accumulation of wild-type p53 protein results in two pathways, cell cycle G1 arrest by p21WAF1/CIP1/SDI1 and apoptosis inhibited by bcl2, which together carry out the tumor suppressor function. Since genetic alterations of p53 are frequently observed in gastric cancers, the expression of p21 and bcl2 may be altered in gastric carcinogenesis. We therefore analyzed normal mucosa, nondysplastic lesions, hyperplastic polyps, adenomas and carcinomas of the human stomach using immuno-histochemistry, polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism and DNA sequencing. In normal gastric mucosa, the expression of p21, bcl2 and p53 was topographically restricted: a) p21 expression was limited to foveolar epithelial cells; b) bcl2 and p53 expression was confined to only a few regenerative epithelial cells of the mucous neck region. In chronic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia, topographic expression became more obvious. This topographic expression was altered in hyperplastic polyps and adenomas. Hyper-plastic polyp showed an increased p21 and p53 expression with no bcl2 expression. Where as bcl2 expression increased and extended up parabasal and superficial dysplastic epithelium, p21 expression increased and was limited to surface dysplastic epithelium. Weak p53 expression was in full thickness of dysplastic epithelium. p21 and bcl2 expression in adenoma was higher than in intestinal type of carcinoma. In carcinomas, this topography was abrogated, but p53 mutation (36%) was present. There was no relationship between p53, p21 and bcl2 expression. As a result, in normal gastric epithelial cells, there was a precisely ordered topographic pattern of p21, bcl2 and wild-type p53 expression that becomes disordered during neoplasia. These results suggest that altered cell cycle and apoptosis control by wild-type p53 and its mediators appears to be an early event in gastric carcinogenesis that may facilitate tumor progression.  相似文献

The whole world is facing a health crisis, that is unique in its kind, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the coronavirus continues spreading, researchers are concerned by providing or help provide solutions to save lives and to stop the pandemic outbreak. Among others, artificial intelligence (AI) has been adapted to address the challenges caused by pandemic. In this article, we design a deep learning system to extract features and detect COVID-19 from chest X-ray images. Three powerful networks, namely ResNet50, InceptionV3, and VGG16, have been fine-tuned on an enhanced dataset, which was constructed by collecting COVID-19 and normal chest X-ray images from different public databases. We applied data augmentation techniques to artificially generate a large number of chest X-ray images: Random Rotation with an angle between ??10 and 10 degrees, random noise, and horizontal flips. Experimental results are encouraging: the proposed models reached an accuracy of 97.20?% for Resnet50, 98.10?% for InceptionV3, and 98.30?% for VGG16 in classifying chest X-ray images as Normal or COVID-19. The results show that transfer learning is proven to be effective, showing strong performance and easy-to-deploy COVID-19 detection methods. This enables automatizing the process of analyzing X-ray images with high accuracy and it can also be used in cases where the materials and RT-PCR tests are limited.

Deep-learning techniques have led to technological progress in the area of medical imaging segmentation especially in the ultrasound domain. In this paper, the main goal of this study is to optimize a deep-learning-based neural network architecture for automatic segmentation in Ultrasonic Computed Tomography (USCT) bone images in a short time process. The proposed method is based on an end to end neural network architecture. First, the novelty is shown by the improvement of Variable Structure Model of Neuron (VSMN), which is trained for both USCT noise removal and dataset augmentation. Second, a VGG-SegNet neural network architecture is trained and tested on new USCT images not seen before for automatic bone segmentation. Therefore, we offer a free USCT dataset. In addition, the proposed model is implemented on both the CPU and the GPU, hence overcoming previous works by a value of 97.38% and 96% for training and validation and achieving high segmentation accuracy for testing with a small error of 0.006, in a short time process. The suggested method demonstrates its ability to augment USCT data and then to automatically segment USCT bone structures achieving excellent accuracy outperforming the state of the art.

In this article, a robust sensorless speed observer–controller scheme for a surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is proposed. First-of-all, following preliminary results in the framework of the induction motor that is less sensible to the position estimation error, an adaptive high gain interconnected observer is designed. It is only supplied by the electrical measurement: the motor currents and voltages. This observer estimates the rotor speed and position, the stator resistance and the load torque. A nonlinear backstepping controller is developed. The above observer is associated with this controller and the complete scheme practical stability proof is given. The overall system is tested by simulation in the framework of an industrial benchmark with a trajectory that particularly checks the motor unobservability condition. Some robustness tests have been carried out. The controller–observer scheme shows good performances in spite of the uncertainties and the unknown load torque.  相似文献

Abstract Nowadays, most modern distributed environments, including service-oriented architecture (SOA), cloud computing, and mobile computing, support replication technologies in order to improve operational characteristics of the services provided. Unfortunately, replication requires additional computational resources and a longer design and deployment process to implement service adequately for a specific situation and to enable service providers to maintain high levels of service with a moderate number of replicas. This paper provides a comprehensive review of replication challenges, types, techniques, and algorithms in distributed environments such as SOA, cloud, and mobile. Moreover, the role of replication in enhancing several QoS attributes, including performance, availability, security, scalability, and reliability, is examined. The author believes that the proposed research will help researchers to easily apply and develop the service replication in distributed system.  相似文献

In this paper, pulsed streaming potentials generated in plastic microfluidic channels are used for the label-free detection of some model analytes. The microchannels are fabricated with the commodity plastic cyclic olefin copolymer (COC), and the detection signal arises from a change in the surface charge upon analyte adsorption on the modified microchannel surface. The role of the surface modification is to confer the microchannel with a predetermined charge and a particular specificity toward the adsorption of the target analyte. In this work, several target probes displaying different levels of specificity were investigated. Heparin and streptavidin were detected by adsorption on microchannel surfaces modified with protamine and biotin, respectively, whereas bovine serum albumin (BSA) and methylene blue (MB) showed nonspecific adsorption on almost any modified or unmodified COC microchannel surface. The magnitude of the streaming potential was found to be proportional to the liquid pressure and the surface charge of the microchannel in accord with the Smoluchowski equation. Because the relative polarity of the streaming potential is determined by the surface charge, the most straightforward detection with this method occurs when the charge is reversed upon analyte adsorption. This strategy was used for the species described in this work, and the lowest concentrations detected were approximately 0.01 units/mL for heparin (below clinical relevance), approximately 10 (-9) M for BSA, and approximately 10 (-6) M for MB. Unlike the conventional method of steady flow, in this work, the streaming potentials were measured under pulsed conditions of flow and using nonreference electrodes. This approach removes the need of special electrolytes as it is usually required when using reference electrodes, and at the same time, it mitigates the interference of electrochemical drift from the electrodes. Relative standard deviations of approximately 1-2% and measuring times of approximately 10 s are readily attained with this experimental setup. The on-channel modification of the surface was carried out by UV-photografting methods given the significant UV transparency of COC.  相似文献

The feasibility of using low-cost solar collection and storage technology to provide energy for residential units is investigated. Different construction strategies were compared including traditional housing practice against newly innovative ideas such as low radiant heating system, desiccant dehumidification, integrated low-cost solar collection, and phase-change material (PCM) storage. The selected building, located in Blacksburg, VA, integrated a solar thermal roof collection system consisting of a low-temperature flat-plate collector integrated within a concrete building envelope linked to a PCM storage tank. For the considered location and weather conditions (Blacksburg, VA), the proposed collection and storage solar system can supply 88% of the building's space heating and hot water needs averaged throughout the year saving the homeowner approximately 61.5% of the annual heating bills. However, the use of a storage system is not economical for the considered conditions. The paper also shows a month-by-month demand and supply distributions for the modeled building's heating and hot water needs.  相似文献
