Statistical channel models based on BER performance are presented for a frequency- and time-selective vehicle-to-vehicle wireless communications link in an expressway environment in Atlanta, Georgia, where both vehicles traveled in the same direction. The models are developed from measurements taken using the direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) technique at 2.45GHz. A collection of tapped delay line models, referred to as a “partitioned” model in the paper, is developed to attempt to capture the extremes of BER performance of the recorded channel. Overall and partition models are compared to the recorded channel in terms of the BER statistics obtained when the channels are inserted in a dedicated short range radio (DSRC) standard simulation system. The quality of the match between synthesized and recorded channel BER statistics is analyzed with respect to type of modulation (fixed or adaptive), the frame length, and the length of the interval over which the BER was calculated.
Guillermo Acosta was born in Mexico City, Mexico, in 1962. He is a Ph.D. Candidate and a graduate research assistant in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, in Atlanta, Georgia. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering with Honors and Master of Engineering, both in Electrical Engineering, from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1985 and 1987, respectively. He also obtained a Master of Business Administration with Honors from the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico (ITAM), Mexico City, Mexico, in 1996. Mr. Acosta has held technical and managerial positions in the recording, radio, and TV industries and in the Communications Ministry of Mexico. He has been an adjunct instructor in Electrical Engineering in the Instituto Tecnologico y Estudios Superiores de Monterrey Campus Estado de Mexico (ITESM-CEM) and the Universidad Iberoamericana. He is member of the IEEE, INCE, Tau Beta Pi, and Eta Kappa Nu.
Mary Ann Ingram received the B.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology, in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1983 and 1989, respectively. From 1983 to 1986, she was a Research Engineer with the Georgia Tech Research Institute in Atlanta, performing studies on radar electronic countermeasure (ECM) systems. In 1986, she became a graduate research assistant with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where in 1989, she became a Faculty Member and is currently Professor. Her early research areas were optical communications and radar systems. In 1997, she established the Smart Antenna Research Laboratory (SARL), which emphasizes the application of multiple antennas to wireless communication systems. The SARL performs system analysis and design, channel measurement, and prototyping, relating to a wide range of wireless applications, including wireless local area network (WLAN) and satellite communications, with focus on the lower layers of communication networks. In this paper, we present a novel scheme for performing fixed-point arithmetic efficiently on fine-grain, massively parallel,
programmable architectures including both custom and FPGA-based systems. We achieve anO(n) speedup, wheren is the operand precision, over the bit-serial methods of existing fine-grain systems such as the DAP, the MPP and the CM2,
within the constraints of regular, near neighbor communication and only a small amount of on-chip memory. This is possible
by means of digit pipelined algorithms which avoid broadcast and which operate in a fully systolic manner by pipelining at
the digit level. A base 4, signed-digit, fully redundant number system and on-line techniques are used to limit carry propagation
and minimize communication costs. p ]Although our algorithms are digit-serial, we are able to match the performance of the
bit-parallel methods, while retaining low communication complexity. Reconfigurable hardware systems built using field programmable
gate arrays (FPGA's) can share in the speed benefits of these algorithms. By using the organization of logic blocks suggested
in this paper, problems of placement and routing that exist in such systems can be avoided. Since the algorithms are amenable

Littoral habitats in large rivers are influenced to varying degrees by changes in discharge. Irrigation abstractions can increase the amount of habitat that would naturally be dewatered during low flow periods and therefore it is important to have some knowledge of the potential impact this may have on riverine macroinvertebrates. The macroinvertebrate assemblages of common littoral habitats in riffles, pools and runs in two reaches each of the Macquarie and Mersey Rivers, northern Tasmania, Australia were compared from samples collected during the low flow and irrigation season, between December 1991 and April 1992. The area under water of these habitats, riffle substrata, macrophyte beds and coarse woody debris, responded differently to changes in discharge. Within a reach, the same taxonomic groups often dominated the total number of macroinvertebrates for all habitats, but there were differences in the proportions contributed by these taxa to the different habitats. In general, taxa characteristic of slow-flowing or lentic habitats, such as ostracods and amphipods, were dominant in macrophyte beds in pools and runs, whereas taxa such as larval elmid beetles and hydropsychid caddisflies were dominant in riffles. A substantial component of the fauna from each habitat within a reach was unique to that habitat, but there was always a similar number of taxa common to all habitats. Classification and ordination grouped samples from both rivers firstly by habitat and secondly by month and reach. Total density and family richness of invertebrates differed by reach, habitat and month in both rivers, except for richness in the Mersey River where habitat was not significant. Differences in densities and numbers of invertebrate families among habitats were not consistent between reaches for each river. This study has highlighted the differences in macroinvertebrate assemblages of several littoral habitats in two lowland rivers in Tasmania. Differences in taxonomic composition, density and richness among habitats within reaches strongly imply the uniqueness of these habitats in terms of the invertebrate faunas that occupy them. We suggest that if maintenance of biotic diversity is an aim of instream flow management, water allocations that address low flows should place a high priority on the maintenance of a diversity of habitats. 相似文献

Power consumption is a top priority in high performance circuit design today. Many low power techniques have been proposed
to tackle the ever serious, highly pressing power consumption problem, which is composed of both dynamic and static power
in the nanometer era. The static power consumption nowadays receives even more attention than that of dynamic power consumption
when technology scales below 100 nm. In order to mitigate the aggressive power consumption, various existing low power techniques
are often used; however, they are often applied independently or combined with two or at most three different techniques together,
and that is not sufficient to address the escalating power issue. In this paper, we present a power optimization framework
for the minimization of total power consumption in combinational logic through multiple V

assignment, device sizing, and stack forcing, while maintaining performance requirements. These four power reduction techniques
are properly encoded into the genetic algorithm and evaluated simultaneously. The overhead imposed by the insertion of level
converters is also taken into account. The effectiveness of each power reduction mechanism is verified, as are the combinations
of different approaches. Experimental results are presented for a number of 65 nm benchmark circuits that span typical circuit
topologies, including inverter chains, SRAM decoders, multiplier, and a 32 bit carry adder. Our experiments show that the
combination of four low power techniques is the effective way to achieve low power budget. The framework is general and can
be easily extended to include other design-time low power techniques, such as multiple gate length or multiple gate oxide

Telehealth is the use of electronic information and communication technology to deliver health and medical information and
services over large and small distances. Broadband wireless services available today, along with more powerful and convenient
handheld devices, will enable a transformational change in health management and healthcare with the introduction of real-time
monitoring and timely responses to a wide array of patient needs. Further, a network of low-cost sensors and wireless systems
help in creating constantly vigilant and pervasive monitoring capability at home and at work. This paper addresses recent
efforts in this growing field, including standards, system architectures, propagation models, and lower layer protocols for

Effective techniques for extending lifetime in multi-hop wireless sensor networks include duty cycling and, more recently introduced, cooperative transmission (CT) range extension. However, a scalable MAC protocol has not been presented that combines both. An On-demand Scheduling Cooperative MAC protocol (OSC-MAC) is proposed to address the energy hole problem in multi-hop wireless sensor networks (WSNs). By combining an on-demand strategy and sensor cooperation intended to extend range, OSC-MAC tackles the spatio-temporal challenges for performing CT in multi-hop WSNs: cooperating nodes are neither on the same duty cycle nor are they necessarily in the same collision domain. We use orthogonal and pipelined duty-cycle scheduling, in part to reduce traffic contention, and devise a reservation-based wake-up scheme to bring cooperating nodes into temporary synchrony to support CT range extension. The efficacy of OSC-MAC is demonstrated using extensive NS-2 simulations for different network scenarios without and with mobility. Compared with existing MAC protocols, simulation results show that while we explicitly account for the overhead of CT and practical failures of control packets in dense traffic, OSC-MAC still gives 80–200 % lifetime improvement. 相似文献

We describe the characterization, ferroelectric phase stability and polarization switching in strain‐free assemblies of PbZr0.3Ti0.7O3 (PZT) nanostructures. The 3‐dimensionally ordered macroporous structures present uniquely large areas and volumes of PZT where the microstructure is spatially modulated and the composition is homogeneous. Variable temperature powder X‐ray diffraction (XRD) studies show that the global structure is crystalline and tetragonal at room temperature and undergoes a reversible tetragonal to cubic phase transition on heating/cooling. The measured phase‐transition temperature is 50–60 °C lower than bulk PZT of the same composition. The local ferroelectric properties were assessed using piezoresponse force spectroscopy that reveal an enhanced piezoresponse from the nanostructured films and demonstrate that the switching polarization can be spatially mapped across these structures. An enhanced piezoresponse is observed in the nanostructured films which we attribute to the formation of strain free films, thus for the first time we are able to assess the effects of crystallite‐size independently of internal stress. Corresponding polarization distributions have been calculated for the bulk and nanostructured materials using a direct variational method and Landau‐Ginzburg‐Devonshire (LGD) theory. By correlating local and global characterization techniques we have for the first time unambiguously demonstrated the formation of tetragonal and ferroelectric PZT in large volume nanostructured architectures. With the wide range of materials available that can be formed into such controlled architectures we conclude that this study opens a pathway for the effective studies of nanoscale ferroelectrics in uniquely large volumes. 相似文献
