Multiple sclerosis (MS) has been clinically considered a chronic inflammatory disease of the white matter; however, in the last decade growing evidence supported an important role of gray matter pathology as a major contributor of MS-related disability and the involvement of synaptic structures assumed a key role in the pathophysiology of the disease. Synaptic contacts are considered central units in the information flow, involved in synaptic transmission and plasticity, critical processes for the shaping and functioning of brain networks. During the course of MS, the immune system and its diffusible mediators interact with synaptic structures leading to changes in their structure and function, influencing brain network dynamics. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the existing literature on synaptic involvement during experimental and human MS, in order to understand the mechanisms by which synaptic failure eventually leads to brain networks alterations and contributes to disabling MS symptoms and disease progression.  相似文献

A study on the self-assembly of regiochemically differentiated methyl substituted quaterthiophenes is presented. Hierarchical self-assembly of 5,4′,3″,5?-tetramethyl-2,2′:5′,2″:5″,2?-quaterthiophene molecule, 7 leads to unprecedented fluorescent superstructures on glass and mica surfaces made by reiteration of a peculiar V-shaped recurring motif that extended at least for three generations.  相似文献

Diamond films are very desirable for application to SAW devices because of their high acoustic wave velocity, which allows the extending of the frequency limit of operation at a given interdigital transducer line-width resolution. Use of high-quality AIN as the piezoelectric layer in conjunction with diamond is also desirable because of its high SAW velocity--the highest among all piezoelectric materials--together with its excellent electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. The problems arising in the growth of A1N films on diamond have prevented, until now, the use of this combination of materials. In this paper we present recent results on the growth of highly oriented, low-stressed A1N films on diamond. SAW propagation on A1N/diamond has been theoretically investigated together with electromechanical coupling for both the Rayleigh and the Sezawa modes. The theoretical calculations show that high SAW velocities are achievable with good coupling efficiencies. Under proper conditions very large piezoelectric couplings are predicted--k2 = 2.2 and 4% for the Rayleigh and the Sezawa wave, respectively--comparable to those observed in strongly piezoelectric single crystals such as LiNbO3, but with SAW velocities approximately two-fold higher. Experiments performed on A1N/diamond/Si SAW test devices have shown good agreement between experimental results and theoretical predictions and demonstrate the feasibility of SAW devices based on this technology.  相似文献

The axisymmetric collapse by plastic progressive folding of a circular tube submitted to axial loading is considered by an experimental approach. The strain field history is measured by means of electric strain gages properly placed on the external surface of the tube so that more than one fold is covered and both axial and circumferential strains are measured. The measured strains are examined both as time-histories and as a deformation field. The formation and development of circumferential plastic hinges are pointed out. The strain histories, reported as a function of the displacement of the testing machine cross-head, are then correlated with the crushing force diagram, leading to a better understanding of the folding mechanics. In particular, the formation of each fold develops through three subsequent phases: the initialization at the closure of the previous fold, the flattening of the upper conical surface, and the flattening of the lower conical surface. While most of the tube wall is pushed outwards of the original cylindrical surface, a portion is pushed inwards of that surface. Moreover, there is a small portion of the wall that is pulled inward during the fold initialization and then pushed outward during the fold closure. The analysis of these histories lead to the validation of the basic assumption of our and other recent kinematical models of the plastic progressive folding.  相似文献

Solution studies on the binding properties of 4,5,6,7-tetrathiocino[1,2-b:3,4-b']diimidazolyl-1,3,8,10-tetraethyl-2,9-dithione (Et(4)todit) toward a number of cationic species including some lanthanide ions revealed the occurrence of a selective 1:1 complexation of the ligand with Sm(3+) ion. Consequently, Et(4)todit was used as a suitable neutral ionophore for the preparation of novel polymeric membrane (PME) and coated graphite (CGE) Sm(3+)-selective electrodes. The electrodes exhibit a Nernstian behavior for Sm(3+) ions over wide concentration ranges (1.0 x 10(-5)-1.0 x 10(-1) M for PME and 1.0 x 10(-7)-1.0 x 10(-1) M for CGE) and very low limits of detection (8.0 x 10(-6) M for PME and 1.6 x 10(-8) M for CGE). The proposed potentiometric sensors manifest advantages of relatively fast response, and, most importantly, good selectivities relative to wide variety of other cations, including other lanthanide ions. The selectivity behavior of the proposed Sm(3+)-selective electrodes revealed a great improvement compared to the best previously reported electrode for samarium(III) ion. The potentiometric responses of the electrodes are independent of the pH of the test solution in the pH range 4.0-6.5. The electrodes were successfully applied to the recovery of Sm(3+) ion from tap water samples and also, as an indicator electrode, in potentiometric titration of samarium(III) ions.  相似文献

A meshless model, based on the meshless local Petrov–Galerkin (MLPG) approach, is developed and implemented for the solution of axi‐symmetric poroelastic problems. The solution accuracy and the code performance are investigated on a realistic application concerning the prediction of land subsidence above a deep compacting reservoir. The analysis addresses several numerical issues, including the parametric selection of the optimal size of the local sub‐domains for the weak form and the nodal supports, the appropriate integration rule, and the linear system solver. The results show that MLPG can be more accurate than the standard finite element (FE) method on coarse discretizations, with its superiority decreasing as the nodal resolution increases. This is due to both a slower convergence rate and a progressively higher computational cost compared to FE. These drawbacks can be partially mitigated by improving the efficiency of the numerical integration and the system solver with the aid of projection techniques based on Krylov subspace methods. The outcome of the present analysis supports the development of coupled methods where a limited number of MLPG nodes are used to locally improve a FE solution. A model for estimating the peak dynamic response distribution of a nonlinear beam, based on a special class of non-Gaussian stochastic processes, is proposed in this paper. It is shown that the stochastic response of a cantilever beam with geometrically nonlinear behavior can be accurately calibrated with translation processes. Different models to describe the significant bimodal features in the marginal probability density functions of the response time histories are proposed. Finally, two of these models are used to estimate the response peak value distributions and the results are compared. This comparison demonstrates the effects of inaccurate models for the parent response processes on the peaks estimation.  相似文献
