Chromium diboride thin films possess desirable combinations of properties (such as high hardness, wear resistance, chemical inertness, high thermal and electrical conductivity), which are attractive for a wide range of potential industrial applications. However, these properties depend strongly on the deposition process and parameters. Investigation of the resultant coating structures could explain certain differences between them, giving important information about the characteristics of the deposition process (which in this particular case is a recently developed method involving magnetron sputtering of loosely packed blended powder targets) and pointing out directions for improvement.In this paper, Cr-B coatings deposited by direct current (DC) and DC-pulse magnetron sputtering of loosely packed blended powder targets are characterised by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques (electron diffraction and bright-field/dark-field imaging). The structures of the coatings deposited with different parameters are investigated and compared, and the effect of oxygen contamination on the structure is discussed.Coatings with an extremely fine, nanocolumnar structure were observed. DC sputter deposited (and generally non-stoichiometric) Cr-B coatings exhibit a short range ordered ‘zone T’ microstructure, while DC-pulse deposited stoichiometric CrB2 coatings are dense and defect-free, crystalline and show strong preferred orientation.A small amount of contamination by oxygen of the interfacial sub-layers (due to the target material being a powder) of the DC-pulse magnetron sputter deposited stoichiometric CrB2 (and near-stoichiometric CrB) coatings was found to affect the structure by suppressing nanocolumnar growth and promoting equiaxed, nanometer-sized grains, close to the coating/substrate interface. One of the most important objectives in the surface engineering of light-weight alloys is to enhance their fatigue properties, allowing both increased performance and an extended service life. This can be achieved by forming a hard surface layer while incorporating a favourable stress state. Single surface treatments, for example, Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO), are not always capable of creating optimal combinations of these characteristics, whereas greater durability can be achieved by applying mechanical pre-treatments prior to the coating. In this work, a combination of shot-peening pre-treatment with plasma electrolytic oxidation coating is studied as a means to improve the fatigue performance of 2024 T351 Al alloy. The shot-peening was carried out in a compressed air configuration using S110 gauge shot at 200% coverage with an intensity of 20 AlmenC. PEO coatings of 30 μm thickness were produced using pulsed bipolar current technology. Fatigue properties were evaluated by a four-point bending technique at a stress ratio of 0.1. Hardness, residual stress and microstructure of the surface layers were studied by Knoop microhardness tests, fluorescence spectroscopy and SEM analyses, respectively. The effect of the combined shot-peening and PEO treatment is an increased fatigue limit and elevated microhardness when compared to aluminium treated only with PEO. 相似文献

We have developed and tested two electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCI) for users to control a cursor on a computer display. Our system uses an adaptive algorithm, based on kernel partial least squares classification (KPLS), to associate patterns in multichannel EEG frequency spectra with cursor controls. Our first BCI, Target Practice, is a system for one-dimensional device control, in which participants use biofeedback to learn voluntary control of their EEG spectra. Target Practice uses a KPLS classifier to map power spectra of 62-electrode EEG signals to rightward or leftward position of a moving cursor on a computer display. Three subjects learned to control motion of a cursor on a video display in multiple blocks of 60 trials over periods of up to six weeks. The best subject's average skill in correct selection of the cursor direction grew from 58% to 88% after 13 training sessions. Target Practice also implements online control of two artifact sources: 1) removal of ocular artifact by linear subtraction of wavelet-smoothed vertical and horizontal electrooculograms (EOG) signals, 2) control of muscle artifact by inhibition of BCI training during periods of relatively high power in the 40-64 Hz band. The second BCI, Think Pointer, is a system for two-dimensional cursor control. Steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) are triggered by four flickering checkerboard stimuli located in narrow strips at each edge of the display. The user attends to one of the four beacons to initiate motion in the desired direction. The SSVEP signals are recorded from 12 electrodes located over the occipital region. A KPLS classifier is individually calibrated to map multichannel frequency bands of the SSVEP signals to right-left or up-down motion of a cursor on a computer display. The display stops moving when the user attends to a central fixation point. As for Target Practice, Think Pointer also implements wavelet-based online removal of ocular artifact; however, in Think Pointer muscle artifact is controlled via adaptive normalization of the SSVEP. Training of the classifier requires about 3 min. We have tested our system in real-time operation in three human subjects. Across subjects and sessions, control accuracy ranged from 80% to 100% correct with lags of 1-5 s for movement initiation and turning. The current study used ecological momentary assessment to test several tenets of the reserve capacity model (L.C. Gallo & K. A. Matthews, 2003). Women (N = 108) with varying socioeconomic status (SES) monitored positive and negative psychosocial experiences and emotions across 2 days. Measures of intrapsychic and social resources were aggregated to represent the reserve capacity available to manage stress. Lower SES was associated with less perceived control and positive affect and more social strain. Control and strain contributed to the association between SES and positive affect. Lower SES elicited greater positive but not negative emotional reactivity to psychosocial experiences. Women with low SES had fewer resources relative to those with higher SES, and resources contributed to the association between SES and daily experiences. No Heading We have measured responses of vibrating wire resonators in superfluid 4He at millikelvin temperatures. We find evidence for turbulence generation above a critical velocity on the order of a few cm/s. At the critical velocity for the onset of turbulence, the resonator velocity abruptly decreases and shows hysteretic behavior. Surprisingly we find that the resonant frequencies of the resonators increase in the turbulent regime. The advantageous oxidation and wear properties of Cr3C2-NiCr thermal spray coatings have resulted in them being extensively applied to combat erosion at high temperatures. Under these conditions, oxide layers take on an ever more significant role in determining the composite response. The response of blended powder-based carbide coatings for erosion applications has formed the basis for application of cermet-based coatings at elevated temperature. In this study, the oxidation mechanisms of as-sprayed and heat-treated Cr3C2-NiCr blended powder-based coatings are characterized. Interdiffusion between the coating phases with long-term exposure increased the Cr content of the matrix phase. This had a significant effect on the oxidation mechanism. The implications of the change in oxidation mechanism and oxide morphology on the coating response to high-temperature erosion are discussed. 相似文献

Objective: The authors recently reported that blood lead (Pb) was a significant mediator for the positive association between socioeconomic status (SES) and peripheral vascular responses to acute stress in children (B. B. Gump et al., 2007). The present study considers the possibility that Pb may also mediate an association between SES and cortisol responses to acute stress. Design: Early childhood Pb exposure was tested as a mediator for cross-sectional associations between SES and cortisol responses. Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome was cortisol responses to acute stress in 9.5-year-old children (N = 108). Results: Lower family income was associated with significantly greater cortisol levels following an acute stress task. A mediational analysis confirmed that Pb was a significant mediator for this association. Conclusion: These results reaffirm the importance of considering the chemical environment as well as social and psychological environment when evaluating psychophysiological effects of low SES.
