The use of ceramics as low cost membrane materials for Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) has gained increasing interest, due to improved performance levels in terms of power and catholyte production. The catholyte production in ceramic MFCs can be attributed to a combination of water or hydrogen peroxide formation from the oxygen reduction reaction in the cathode, water diffusion and electroosmotic drag through the ion exchange membrane. This study aims to evaluate, for the first time, the effect of ceramic wall/membrane thickness, in terms of power, as well as catholyte production from MFCs using urine as a feedstock. Cylindrical MFCs were assembled with fine fire clay of different thicknesses (2.5, 5 and 10 mm) as structural and membrane materials. The power generated increased when the membrane thickness decreased, reaching 2.1 ± 0.19 mW per single MFC (2.5 mm), which was 50% higher than that from the MFCs with the thickest membrane (10 mm). The amount of catholyte collected also decreased with the wall thickness, whereas the pH increased. Evidence shows that the catholyte composition varies with the wall thickness of the ceramic membrane. The possibility of producing different quality of catholyte from urine opens a new field of study in water reuse and resource recovery for practical implementation.  相似文献

The thermal degradation of plasticized polyvinyl chloride (plastisol) is reported here. Plastisols used in the present work were prepared with the plasticizer diethylhexyl phthalate in different proportions. Thermogravimetric analysis has been applied to study the behavior of plastisols at high temperatures and to evaluate their degradation kinetics. Several tests were carried out at different heating rates and the variation of the degree of reaction with time and temperature was calculated. The influence of the heating rate in dynamic measurements (5–40°C/min) on kinetic parameters, such as activation energies and reaction orders, has also been studied. These parameters were calculated from dynamic thermogravimetric analysis tests using Friedman analysis and a kinetic model for the degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) and plastisols has been then developed. The obtained model was able to simulate the thermal degradation process of plastisols in dynamic conditions and was used to evaluate the effects of additives in the degradation. The results of this study can be used to optimize the concentration of plasticizers and stabilizers in poly(vinyl chloride) formulations. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Field-deployable, high-resolution, time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The development of a new high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) is reported. The high-resolution capabilities of this instrument allow the direct separation of most ions from inorganic and organic species at the same nominal m/z, the quantification of several types of organic fragments (CxHy, CxHyOz, CxHyNp, CxHyOzNp), and the direct identification of organic nitrogen and organosulfur content. This real-time instrument is field-deployable, and its high time resolution (0.5 Hz has been demonstrated) makes it well-suited for studies in which time resolution is critical, such as aircraft studies. The instrument has two ion optical modes: a single-reflection configuration offers higher sensitivity and lower resolving power (up to approximately 2100 at m/z 200), and a two-reflectron configuration yields higher resolving power (up to approximately 4300 at m/z 200) with lower sensitivity. The instrument also allows the determination of the size distributions of all ions. One-minute detection limits for submicrometer aerosol are <0.04 microg m(-3) for all species in the high-sensitivity mode and <0.4 microg m(-3) in the high-resolution mode. Examples of ambient aerosol data are presented from the SOAR-1 study in Riverside, CA, in which the spectra of ambient organic species are dominated by CxHy and CxHyOz fragments, and different organic and inorganic fragments at the same nominal m/z show different size distributions. Data are also presented from the MIRAGE C-130 aircraft study near Mexico City, showing high correlation with independent measurements of surrogate aerosol mass concentration.  相似文献

This paper proposes the implementation of demand response (DR) programmes in large manufacturing facilities featuring distributed wind and solar energy. Manufacturing facilities are high consumers of electric power. For this reason, these facilities usually pay exorbitant utility bills, which could be as much as $10–20 million per year. A high consumption of electricity also means that upstream fossil-fuelled power plants must release thousands of metric tonnes of carbon annually during the generation of electricity. DR contracts offer a lower utility rate in return for a load reduction during contingent events (i.e. peak hours). This paper covers the modelling and implementation of an interruptible/curtailable DR programme participated by a manufacturer that possesses onsite renewable generation units. These complementary energy resources allow the manufacturer to meet the curtailment requirements without causing any major electricity shortage that adversely affects the normal production schedule. We developed a stochastic programming model to determine the capacity of the wind turbine and solar panels that maximise the DR programme savings. The optimal solutions are derived based on central composite design methodology.  相似文献

In this article, tensile tests as well as LS and LT notched Charpy impact tests were performed at the temperature range between 77 K (?196 °C) and 473 K (200 °C) on an oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) Fe20Cr6Al0.5Y2O3 hot-rolled tube. The absorbed energy values in the range of high temperatures of LS notched specimens are considerably higher than those of LT notched specimens; however, such values tend to converge as temperature increases. Ductile fracture on the normal planes to RD with delaminations parallel to the tube surface was observed in the temperature range between room temperature (RT) and 473 K (200 °C). Delaminations of crack divider type were observed in LT specimens, whereas delaminations of crack arrester type were observed in LS specimens. The yttria particles in the grain boundaries and the transverse plastic anisotropy are the possible reasons why the delaminations were parallel to the tube surface.  相似文献

In this paper, the mathematical analysis of a quasilinear parabolic–hyperbolic problem in a multidimensional bounded domain Ω is carried out. In a region Ω p a diffusion–advection–reaction-type equation is set, while in the complementary Ω h ≡ Ω\ Ω p , only advection–reaction terms are taken into account. First, the definition of a weak solution u is provided through an entropy inequality on the whole domain Q by using the classical Kuzhkov entropy pairs and the F. Otto framework to transcribe the boundary conditions on ∂Ω ∩ ∂Ω h . Since Γ hp contains the outward characteristics for the first-order operator set in Q h , the uniqueness proof begins by focusing on the behavior of u in the hyperbolic layer and then in the parabolic one where u fulfills a variational equality that takes into account the entered data from Q h . Fecal indicator microbes, such as enterococci, are often used to assess potential health risks caused by pathogens at recreational beaches. Microbe levels often vary based on collection time and sampling location. The primary goal of this study was to assess how spatial and temporal variations in sample collection, which are driven by environmental parameters, impact enterococci measurements and beach management decisions. A secondary goal was to assess whether enterococci levels can be predictive of the presence of Staphylococcus aureus, a skin pathogen. Over a ten-day period, hydrometeorologic data, hydrodynamic data, bather densities, enterococci levels, and S. aureus levels including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) were measured in both water and sand. Samples were collected hourly for both water and sediment at knee-depth, and every 6 h for water at waist-depth, supratidal sand, intertidal sand, and waterline sand. Results showed that solar radiation, tides, and rainfall events were major environmental factors that impacted enterococci levels. S. aureus levels were associated with bathing load, but did not correlate with enterococci levels or any other measured parameters. The results imply that frequencies of advisories depend heavily upon sample collection policies due to spatial and temporal variation of enterococci levels in response to environmental parameters. Thus, sampling at different times of the day and at different depths can significantly impact beach management decisions. Additionally, the lack of correlation between S. aureus and enterococci suggests that use of fecal indicators may not accurately assess risk for some pathogens.  相似文献

Effect of natural extracts on the formation of acrylamide in fried potatoes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The objective of the present work was to evaluate the effect of natural extracts on the formation of acrylamide in fried potatoes. The aqueous extracts used were obtained from wild oregano (Origanum vulgare), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spp) and green tea (Camellia sinensis), which presented a high percentage of free radical inhibition (DPPH) (48–99%) and content of total phenolic compounds (205–547 μg EAG/μg of d.w.). Potatoes were submerged in the antioxidant extracts at a concentration of 1 g/L for 1 min, before being fried and their acrylamide concentration quantified by GC–MS. The extracts from green tea, cinnamon and oregano reduced the acrylamide level by 62%, 39% and 17%, respectively. The potatoes submerged in cinnamon and bougainvillea extracts showed differences in the color parameters compared to the control potatoes (P < 0.05); however, no significant differences (P > 0.05) were found in the texture and the peroxide values. The sensorial evaluation showed that the acceptance of the potatoes was not affected by the treatment applied. Thus, we can conclude that pre-treating potatoes with antioxidants before frying produces beneficial effects such as a reduction in acrylamide content, without any significant changes in their physicochemical, sensorial and textural properties.  相似文献

The millimeter-wave spectrum above 70 GHz provides a cost-effective solution to increase the wireless communications data rates by increasing the carrier wave frequencies. We report on the development of two key components of a wireless transmission system, a high-speed photodiode (HS-PD) and a Schottky Barrier Diode (SBD). Both components operate uncooled, a key issue in the development of compact modules. On the transmitter side, an improved design of the HS-PD allows it to deliver an output RF power exceeding 0 dBm (1 mW). On the receiver side, we present the design process and achieved results on the development of a compact direct envelope detection receiver based on a quasi-optical SDB module. Different resonant (meander dipole) and broadband (Log-Spiral and Log-Periodic) planar antenna solutions are designed, matching the antenna and Schottky diode impedances at high frequency. Impedance matching at baseband is also provided by means of an impedance transition to a 50 Ohm output. From this comparison, we demonstrate the excellent performance of the broadband antennas over the entire E-band by setting up a short-range wireless link transmitting a 1 Gbps data signal.  相似文献
