Kootenai River white sturgeon spawn in an 18-km reach of the Kootenai River, Id. Since completion of Libby Dam upstream from the spawning reach in 1972, 1974 is the only year with documented significant recruitment of juvenile fish. Where successful in other rivers, white sturgeon spawn over clean coarse material of gravel size or larger. The channel substrate in the current (2008) 18-km spawning reach is composed primarily of sand and some buried gravel; within a few kilometers upstream there is an extended reach of clean gravel, cobble, and bedrock. We used a quasi-three-dimensional flow and sediment-transport model along with the locations of collected sturgeon eggs as a proxy for spawning location from 1994 to 2002 to gain insight into spawning-habitat selection in a reach which is currently unsuitable due to the lack of coarse substrate. Spatial correlations between spawning locations and simulated velocity and depth indicate fish select regions of higher velocity and greater depth within any river cross section to spawn. These regions of high velocity and depth occur in the same locations regardless of the discharge magnitude as modeled over a range of pre- and postdam flow conditions. A flow and sediment-transport simulation shows high discharge, and relatively long-duration flow associated with predam flow events is sufficient to scour the fine sediment overburden, periodically exposing existing lenses of gravel and cobble as lag deposits in the current spawning reach. This is corroborated by video observations of bed surface material following a significant flood event in 2006, which show gravel and cobble present in many locations in the current spawning reach. Thus, both modeling and observations suggest that the relative rarity of extremely high flows in the current regulated flow regime is at least partly responsible for the lack of successful spawning; in the predam flow regime, frequent high flows removed the fine sediment overburden, unveiling coarse material and providing suitable substrate in the current spawning reach. 相似文献

The estimation of water demand is fundamental to effective water resource management. Water supply is measured at district level but true demand is not, and therefore studies of water-pricing relations are limited and mass-balance based assessment of leakage, illegal use, meter inaccuracies etc., are compromised. This paper describes the value and limitations of existing geodemographic methods, and an alternative technique widely used in other fields, microsimulation, is proposed. It is shown that geographic stability in demand relations is not found in all consumer commodities and cannot be assumed for water. Sampled data for Leeds, West Yorkshire, are used to construct a microsimulation model, and the results of that model are applied to the city of Leeds at ward level. This work examined the sorption potential to wastewater primary- and activated-sludge solids for 34 emerging trace organic chemicals at environmentally relevant concentrations. These compounds represent a diverse range of physical and chemical properties, such as hydrophobicity and charge state, and a diverse range of classes, including steroidal hormones, pharmaceutically-active compounds, personal care products, and household chemicals. Solid-water partitioning coefficients (Kd) were measured where 19 chemicals did not have previously reported values. Sludge solids were inactivated by a nonchemical lyophilization and dry-heat technique, which provided similar sorption behavior for recalcitrant compounds as compared to fresh activated-sludge. Sorption behavior was similar between primary- and activated-sludge solids from the same plant and between activated-sludge solids from two nitrified processes from different wastewater treatment systems. Positively-charged pharmaceutically-active compounds, amitriptyline, clozapine, verapamil, risperidone, and hydroxyzine, had the highest sorption potential, log Kd = 2.8-3.8 as compared to the neutral and negatively-charged chemicals. Sorption potentials correlated with a compound’s hydrophobicity, however the higher sorption potentials observed for positively-charged compounds for a given log Dow indicate additional sorption mechanisms, such as electrostatic interactions, are important for these compounds. Previously published soil-based one-parameter models for predicting sorption from hydrophobicity (log Kow > 2) can be used to predict sorption for emerging nonionic compounds to wastewater sludge solids. 相似文献

The findings of research in distribution system planning methodologies indicate: discontinuity between the theory and practice of distribution system planning; set of new requirements for distribution system planning in the light of electricity industry restructuring and other developments in the industry and technology; lack of topical research in general distribution system planning methodologies focused on live utility requirements; and several immediate challenges for researchers and developers in distribution planning methodology. Some of the challenges in distribution system planning for the future have been noted in this letter and several more are added to the list. The future challenges for distribution system planning include: further development of techniques based on heuristics, cases, and tacit knowledge; incorporation of the multiple drivers in present-day electricity distribution planning (e.g., reliability, distributed generation, load, and condition); integration of planning techniques with other energy or utility service planning; incorporation of best practice in planning methodology; and consideration of customer needs in an environment of changing customer base under restructuring. 相似文献

Osteoclast activation is initiated by adhesion to the bone surface, followed by cytoskeletal rearrangement, the formation of the sealing zone, and a polarized ruffled membrane. This study shows that PYK2/CAKbeta/RAFTK, a cytoplasmic kinase related to the focal adhesion kinase, is highly expressed in rat osteoclasts in vivo. Using murine osteoclast-like cells (OCLs) or their mononuclear precursors (pOCs), generated in a coculture of bone marrow and osteoblastic MB1.8 cells, we show: (a) tyrosine phosphorylation of PYK2 upon ligation of beta3 integrins or adhesion of pOCs to serum, vitronectin, osteopontin, or fibronectin but not to laminin or collagen; (b) coimmunoprecipitation of PYK2 and c-Src from OCLs; (c) PYK2 binding to the SH2 domains of Src; (d) marked reduction in tyrosine phosphorylation and kinase activity of PYK2 in OCLs derived from Src (-/-) mice, which do not form actin rings and do not resorb bone; (e) PYK2 phosphorylation by exogeneous c-Src; (f) translocation of PYK2 to the Triton X-100 insoluble cytoskeletal fraction upon adhesion; (g) localization of PYK2 in podosomes and the ring-like structures in OCLs plated on glass and in the sealing zone in OCLs plated on bone; and (h) activation of PYK2, in the presence of MB1.8 cells, parallels the formation of sealing zones and pit resorption in vitro and is reduced by echistatin or calcitonin and cytochalasin D. Taken together, these findings suggest that Src-dependent tyrosine phosphorylation of PYK2 is involved in the adhesion-induced formation of the sealing zone, required for osteoclastic bone resorption. 相似文献
