Temperature and Frequency Dependence of the Ultrasound Velocity in Neutron-Irradiated Quartz Crystals Above 5 K

Neutron-irradiated quartz crystal is one of the interesting materials for the study of the glassy dynamics. The temperature and frequency dependence of the sound velocity in amorphous materials at temperatures above the low-temperature maximum is not well understood. In this paper we present the results of our measurements of the variation of the ultrasound velocity (270 – 650 MHz) in neutron-irradiated quartz crystals with different irradiation doses in temperature range 5 - 35 K. We have found that the temperature dependence of the ultrasound velocity is linear in the sample with a dose < 10 ¹⁹ n/cm² and is sublinear in samples with a dose > 10 ¹⁹ n/cm² . We discuss our results in the framework of the different theoretical approaches. PACS numbers: 61.43. j, 62.65.+k, 63.     

Dynamics of Interacting OH– and OD– Ions in KCl

OH^– and OD^– defects are known to form rotational tunneling systems in KCl host crystals. We have studied the complex dielectric susceptibility of KCl doped with different concentrations of OH^– and OD^– in a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. Our main result is that there is a transition from coherent single ion tunneling at low defect concentration to an incoherent tunneling motion at high defect concentrations. In addition, we have studied the thermally activated motion of pairwise coupled hydroxide ions in an attempt to obtain information on the microscopic configurations of the different pairs contributing to the dielectric loss. Mechanical and microstructural investigations of nitrided Fe-Cr layers

Nano-indentation measurements were carried out on nitrided Fe-Cr alloys (1 and 3 wt% Cr) in order to determine local micro-mechanical properties. The method recently developed on nitrided 32CrMoV13 steel was applied to the Fe-Cr alloys. Evolution of micro-yield stress through the nitrided layer was correlated to microstructural parameters (volume fraction of CrN precipitates, diameter of precipitates, etc.) investigated and statistically analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the mechanical behavior of the nitrided layer for both alloys studied can be described using the Orowan model of precipitation strengthening.
