The use of polycrystalline silicon layers on low-cost substrates is a promising approach for the fabrication of low-cost solar cells. Using low-carbon steel and graphite as substrates, solar cell structures have been deposited by the thermal decomposition of silane and appropriate dopants.Steel was selected as a substrate on the sole basis of its low cost. However, steel and silicon are not compatible in their properties, and an interlayer of a diffusion barrier, such as borosilicate, must be used to minimize the diffusion of iron from the substrate into the deposit. The deposited silicon on borosilicate/steel substrates is polycrystalline with a grain size of 1–5 μm, depending on deposition conditions. P-n junction solar cells were found to have low open-circuit voltages and poor current-voltage characteristics, and Schottky-barrier solar cells were found to show negligible photovoltages.Graphite is more compatible with silicon in properties than steel, and silicon deposited on graphite substrates shows considerably better microstructures. A number of solar cells, 2·5×2·5 cm in area, have been fabricated from n+-silicon/p-silicon/p+-silicon/graphite structures. The best cell to date had a Voc of 0·35 V and an AMO efficiency of 1·5% (no antireflection coating). This type of solar cell is very promising because of the simplicity in fabrication.  相似文献

A real-time PCR system with 16S rRNA gene-targeted group-specific primers was developed to quantitatively detect lactic acid bacteria (LAB) of the genera Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Pediococcus, and Weissella in different types of commercially available dried sourdoughs. Despite a high degree of degradation in the DNA isolated from the doughs, the 341-bp 16S rRNA gene fragment of the sourdough LAB biota could specifically be amplified. For dried sourdoughs, the resulting calculated LAB cell counts were determined to be up to 3.7 × 107 cells/g fresh dough, whereas in non-fermented dough acidifiers, used as a control, the calculated LAB cell counts did not exceed 3.6 × 104 cells/g fresh dough. Moreover, the effect of low pH and/or high lactic acid concentrations prevailing in the doughs on the detectability of LAB cells in spray- and roller-dried sourdoughs by PCR was investigated. Drying of non-acidified sourdoughs still permitted to detect the LAB cells by PCR, whereas drying of acidified doughs reduced the detectable cell counts by approximately 5 (spray dried) and 2 (roller dried) orders of magnitudes. Incubation of acidified doughs for 24 h did not affect the detectability of LAB cells in spray-dried doughs but further reduced the detectable cell counts in roller-dried doughs by additional 2 orders of magnitude.  相似文献

Automobile crashes are the leading cause of death in children aged 1–14 years. Many children, however, are not properly restrained in safety seats that reduce serious injury and death. This study used a discrete choice conjoint experiment to study factors influencing the decision to use booster seats. Parents of 1714 children aged 4–9 years from nine Canadian provinces completed choice tasks presenting experimentally varied combinations of 15 4-level booster seat promotion attributes. Latent class analysis yielded three segments of parents. The choices of the Benefit Sensitive segment (50%) were most sensitive to the injury prevention benefits of booster seats. The choices of parents in the Context Sensitive segment (33.5%) were more likely to be influenced by installation complexity, oppositional behavior, and the prospect that their child may be teased for riding in booster seats. Parents in the High Risk segment (16.5%) were younger, less educated, and less knowledgeable about vehicle safety legislation. They anticipated fewer benefits, expected more barriers and were less likely to use booster seats. Simulations suggest that consistent enforcement coupled with advertising focusing on injury prevention and the use of booster seats by other parents would increase adoption.  相似文献

Aerosol particles, especially those ranging from 50 to 200 nm, strongly impact climate by serving as nuclei upon which water condenses and cloud droplets form. However, the small number of analytical methods capable of measuring the composition of particles in this size range, particularly at the individual particle level, has limited our knowledge of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) composition and hence our understanding of aerosols effect on climate. To obtain more insight into particles in this size range, we developed a method which couples a growth tube (GT) to an ultrafine aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometer (UF-ATOFMS), a combination that allows in situ measurements of the composition of individual particles as small as 38 nm. The growth tube uses water to grow particles to larger sizes so they can be optically detected by the UF-ATOFMS, extending the size range to below 100 nm with no discernible changes in particle composition. To gain further insight into the temporal variability of aerosol chemistry and sources, the GT-UF-ATOFMS was used for online continuous measurements over a period of 3 days.  相似文献

Immune functions decline as we age, while the incidence of cancer rises. The advent of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) has not only revolutionized cancer therapy, but also spawned great interest in identifying predictive biomarkers, since only one third of patients show treatment response. The aging process extensively affects the adaptive immune system and thus T cells, which are the main target of ICB. In this review, we address age-related changes regarding the adaptive immune system with a focus on T cells and their implication on carcinogenesis and ICB. Differences between senescence, exhaustion, and anergy are defined and current knowledge, treatment strategies, and studies exploring T cell aging as a biomarker for ICB are discussed. Finally, novel approaches to improve immunotherapies and to identify biomarkers of response to ICB are presented and their potential is assessed in a comparative analysis.  相似文献

Adaptation and natural selection are central concepts in the emerging science of evolutionary psychology. Natural selection is the only known causal process capable of producing complex functional organic mechanisms. These adaptations, along with their incidental by-products and a residue of noise, comprise all forms of life. Recently, S. J. Gould (1991) proposed that exaptations and spandrels may be more important than adaptations for evolutionary psychology. These refer to features that did not originally arise for their current use but rather were co-opted for new purposes. He suggested that many important phenomena—such as art, language, commerce, and war—although evolutionary in origin, are incidental spandrels of the large human brain. The authors outline the conceptual and evidentiary standards that apply to adaptations, exaptations, and spandrels and discuss the relative utility of these concepts for psychological science. Using single primer pairs, intracellular gene sequences of cytomegalovirus (CMV-Towne's strain) and alpha-tubulin were amplified (in situ PCR) from cells in human body fluids and in suspensions. Visualization of CMV amplificants was carried out by in situ hybridization (ISH), using both a biotinylated double-stranded DNA probe and a radiolabelled oligonucleotide probe. Visualization of alpha-tubulin amplificants was achieved using both radiolabelled single-stranded cRNA and oligonucleotide probes. Liberated amplificants were also identified by bands of expected size by gel electrophoresis. The specificity of the PCR products was confirmed by Southern blot analysis. Intracellular amplification was identified both in unfixed cells and, optimally, after brief alcohol fixation, whilst maintaining relative isotonicity in all working solutions. For CMV, enhanced signal was observed in cells (cultured fibroblasts or urine sediment) undergoing in situ PCR using either biotinylated or radiolabelled probes compared with controls undergoing ISH alone. For alpha-tubulin, radiolabelled riboprobes and oligoprobes only produced signals within cells (human peripheral lymphocytes, ascitic fluid and bladder washings from routine cytological specimens) after in situ PCR, but not after ISH alone. Morphological evaluation was superior with biotinylated probes, and minimal back-diffusion effect was found compared with radiolabelled probes. Up to 80% of cells survived thermal cycling. In situ PCR detected short sequence (100 bp) foreign DNA and low copy number genomic DNA, and was superior to ISH alone. In contrast to radiolabelled probes, very small CMV amplificants could be detected without a significant 'back-diffusion' effect when using the large biotinylated probe in this model system.  相似文献

This article analyzes whether state-approved jury instructions adequately guide jury discretion in the penalty phase of first-degree murder trials. It examines Eighth Amendment jurisprudence regarding guided jury discretion, emphasizing the use of "empirical factors" to examine the quality of state-approved instructions. Psychological research and testimony on the topic of the comprehensibility of jury logical instructions are reviewed. Data from a recently completed simulation with 80 deliberating juries showed that current instructions do not adequately convey the concepts and processes essential to guiding penalty phase judgments. An additional simulation with 20 deliberating juries demonstrated that deliberation alone does not correct for jurors' errors in comprehension.
