In the present study a mathematical model has been applied to interpret the permeate flux decay that occurs during the process of concentrating skim milk by ultrafiltration using a commercial membrane module. The effects on membrane fouling of two operational variables, temperature and transmembrane pressure, have been studied using technical parameters. An energy analysis has demonstrated that the major energy consumption takes place in the thermal process and not in the mechanical pumping of the fluid. In addition, higher increments in permeate volume can be achieved by increasing transmembrane pressure, not temperature. The mathematical analysis presented here permits the evaluation of optimum values of the engineering parameters necessary to design and operate skim milk ultrafiltration units.  相似文献

Raman analysis has been carried out to study the effects of Vitacel® wheat dietary fibre (WDF) during gelation of surimi. The main results reveal the following: (a) Vitacel® comprises natural cellulose I as major component; (b) hydration of WDF leads to νCH frequency upshifting and decreasing intensity. On the basis of these spectral features it is suggested that water transfer from protein to WDF can occur in surimi gels. WDF hydration can be interpreted in the sense that this fibre either takes water that is delivered from the gel protein upon heat-mediated formation of β-sheets and hydrophobic contacts and/or or acts as an active dehydrating agent. An increase of solvent-exposed hydrophobic side chains is observed in the sol phase, upon the addition of WDF, which may cause breaking of intermolecular protein hydrophobic contacts; a subsequent change upon WDF-containing gel formation is the reduction in the νCH intensity, which may be indicative of increasing hydrophobic WDF-protein contacts. Interestingly, these results constitute molecular data, to be considered when designing restructured fish products with these fibre ingredients.  相似文献

This paper presents the first study of the benthic invertebrate assemblages of the upper section of the Paraguay River, a major tributary to the Pantanal wetland in Brazil. Thirty‐eight sites were sampled along a 200 km section below the city of Cáceres in November 2000. Sixty‐nine species and morphospecies were identified, which were dominated by Oligochaeta and Chironomidae. Mean density of benthic invertebrates varied between 72 and 10 354 m?2 in the meandering sector of the river, 3611–49 629 m?2 in the straight–transitional sectors, 682–5962 m?2 in the floodplain lakes, and 1704–2208 m?2 in floodplain channels. Highest densities were attained in sand‐gravel sediments dominated by the psammophilous oligochaete Narapa bonettoi. The Shannon diversity index ranged from 0.75 to 2.08 and was highest in floodplain lakes. Statistical analysis (UPGMA and CCA) revealed that benthic assemblages in the floodplain habitats were clearly distinct from the riverine habitats. In the river channel, the habitats were distinguished by grain size while the floodplain habitats were mostly determined by current and silt‐clay concentration (floodplain channels) or by organic matter concentration (floodplain lakes). Conservation efforts in the Upper Paraguay area should aim to maintain the flood pulse as a permanent source of spatial and temporal habitat heterogeneity. We report fabrication, characterization, and use of microfluidic analysis devices containing surface-immobilized cell-capturing molecules. Amino-terminated biotin ligands are immobilized onto the luminal surface of a microdevice and effectively support self-assembly of proteins, antibodies, and mammalian cells. For this purpose, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) polymerization is used to functionalize PDMS-made microfluidic devices with poly[para-xylylene carboxylic acid pentafluorophenolester-co-para-xylylene]. The resulting reactive coating shows excellent adhesion when deposited in thin films (approximately 100 nm, and the distribution of the pentafluorophenol ester groups is reasonably uniform within the microchannel inner surface, as examined by fluorescence microscopy. The utility of these devices for cell-based bioassays is demonstrated by monitoring the concentration-dependent effect of the disintegrin echistatin on cell adhesion. The described assay format could be relevant to clinical research in various fields, including angiogenesis research.  相似文献

The C1 and C2 stereocenters of α-glucosaminides can be prepared by establishing the stereocenters in either order. For the former, a C2-azido glucosyl donor is prepared first, and the restraining effect of a 4,6-O-benzylidene ring is used to induce α-coupling. For the latter, the C1 linkage is prepared first by use of an n-pentenyl-manno-1,2-orthoester donor which ensures (a) clean α-coupling and (b) a convenient C2-ester. The C2-ester is replaced with a triflate leaving group, and nucleophilic displacement is effected by use of a hypervalent silicon azide.  相似文献

Many areas in rural non-Western regions are installing electrification systems based on renewable energy. Although these projects are usually welcome, they sometimes fail. Explanations for failures often cite technical reasons. In this research, partly based on the results of the SOPRA_RE project, we focus on the users, studying the relationships between technology and society. By analysing potential sources of failures, we identify the root of the problem as how a new technology is received by the local society. In this paper we introduce dimensions that we consider to be especially important in the process of technology integration. We defend the importance of combining the technical outlook with the sociological one, based on the idea that the latter is often indispensable as a complementary element of technical explanations of system failures, which in turn provides a better basis for solving them. We use specific examples to bolster our insistence on the need to achieve convergence between the technical and the sociological outlooks.  相似文献

This article seeks to quantify the effects of the penalty points system driver's license during the 18-month period following its coming into force. This is achieved by means of univariate and multivariate unobserved component models set up in a state space framework estimated using maximum likelihood. A detailed intervention analysis is carried out in order to test for the effects and their duration of the introduction of the penalty points system driver's license in Spain. Other variables, mainly indicators of the level of economic activity in Spain, are also considered. Among the main effects, we can mention an average reduction of almost 12.6% in the number of deaths in highway accidents. It would take at least 2 years for that effect to disappear. For the rest of the safety indicator variables (vehicle occupants injured in highway accidents and vehicle occupants injured in accidents built-up areas) the effects disappeared 1 year after the law coming into force.  相似文献

Although, biomarkers are regarded as an important tool for monitoring injury severity and treatment efficacy, and for predicting clinical evolution in many neurological diseases and disorders including spinal cord injury, there is still a lack of reliable biomarkers for the assessment of clinical course and patient outcome. In this study, a biological dataset of 60 cytokines/chemokines, growth factorsm and intracellular and extracellular matrix proteins, analyzed in CSF within 24 h of injury, was used for correlation analysis with the clinical dataset of the same patients. A heat map was generated of positive and negative correlations between biomarkers and clinical rating scale scores at discharge, and between biomarkers and changes in clinical scores during the observation period. Using very stringent statistical criteria, we found 10 molecules which correlated with clinical scores at discharge, and five molecules, which correlated with changes in clinical scores. The proposed methodology may be useful for generating hypotheses regarding “predictive” and “treatment effectiveness” biomarkers, thereby suggesting potential candidates for disease-modifying therapies using a “bed-to-bench” approach.  相似文献
