A case of propylene glycol intoxication in a premature infant is reported. The infant went into a state of coma after treatment for burns with antiseptic dressings. Cessation of the topical treatment resulted in complete recovery. An exceptionally high level of the dressings' solvent, propylene glycol, found in the urinary chromatogram, was believed to be the causative agent. It is suggested that topical preparations containing propylene glycol should not be used in premature infants during the first weeks of life. 相似文献

Derivation of dynamic hysteresis loops (force deflection curves) of shock absorbing bushing materials by means of double integration of accelerometer signals is described. The significance of energy dissipation capability of expanded polymers with associated peak deceleration and maximal strain is discussed along with damping characteristics. A “Cushion Efficiency Factor” is introduced, in terms of the ratio of peak acceleration transmitted by a cushion to the energy dissipated per unit cushion area. Three types of expanded polymers commonly used as cushioning materials are evaluated accordingly. Expanded polyethylene (2,2 lb/cu ft), expanded polyurethane (2.1 lb/cu ft) and polystyrene filled polyurethane (1.7 lb/cu ft), all conditioned at 73°F and 50 percent RH. For each of these, two effective drop height tests were conducted, with heights of 12 in. and 42 in. Depending on the polymer type, peak product accelerations were between 33–38 g's in the 12 in. drops and 65–118 g's in the 42 in. drops, with corresponding maximal cushion strains of 0.15–0.20 and 0.39–0.47, respectively. Energy dissipating capabilities of polymers tested during first half cycle following drops were 148–179 lb in. and 477–708 lb in., respectively, depending on polymer type. Measurements performed during the early summer months of 1988–1991 at a rural site in central Israel, some 50 km east of the highly urbanized coastal region, have shown that during the afternoon hours the area was often under the influence of ozone mixing ratios above the Israel ambient standard (117 ppbv) and occasionally even above 150 ppbv. Analysis of air mass back trajectories has shown that only those air masses passing over the Tel Aviv metropolitan area cause elevated ozone mixing ratios at the rural site. This highly urbanized region emits large amounts of precursors which are entrapped in the air parcels entering Israel under the predominantly westerly wind flows. As these air masses travel inland, sufficient time is available (3–5 h) to allow the photochemical reactions to generate ozone before reaching the rural site. The above hypothesis is further supported by the fact that parallel to the increase of ozone at the rural site, elevated carbon monoxide (up to 0.8 ppmv) and other trace gases were also observed. A significant correlation (R2 > 0.8) was found to exist between the ozone mixing ratio and the NOx concentrations in photochemically aged air masses. The hematologic malignancies rarely complicate pregnancy. Pregnancy is not thought to affect the course of either Hodgkin's lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, or the leukemias. The polyphenolic components of Idared and Shampion apple purées were determined by HPLC; chlorogenic acid was the most abundant acid (20.0 mg/100 g in microwaved Idared); other polyphenols identified in high concentrations included (−)-epicatechin, procyanidin B1 and B2; quercetin and cyanidin glycosides were found in minor concentrations. The Shampion purées had higher total phenolics (142 mg/100 g) and procyanidin B2 concentrations (17.3 mg/100 g) than the Idared ones, and polymeric procyanidins represented 41% of all polyphenols. Antioxidant capacities of the samples, determined by spectrophotometric methods and EPR spectroscopy, correlated well with the concentration of polyphenols. The antioxidant properties could be better represented by EPR than by UV–vis measurements. The latter require transparent (clear) samples whereas EPR can be a method of choice in the assessment of radical-scavenging activity of dense and cloudy apple purées. Our results support the putative high antioxidant value of apple purées and define their capacity in terms of the major constituents. The most commonly used methods to generate microbial inactivation curves are based on the assumptions that microbial mortality follows first order kinetics and that the temperature effect on the 'D value' or exponential rate constant is determined by the log linear model or the Arrhenius equation, respectively. However, many bacterial cells and spores follow the Weibull-Log Logistic (WeLL) model and software to simulate pasteurization and sterilization processes using this model has been available for some years as free downloadable programs written in MS Excel. According to this model, an organism's heat resistance parameters are T(c), a marker of the temperature level where the inactivation accelerates, k, the steepness of the Weibullian rate parameter in the lethal regime where T>T(c) and n, a measure of the semi logarithmic isothermal survival curve's concavity and its direction. Because the traditional first order kinetics is just a special case of the Weibullian model with n=1.0, the software is applicable to both linear and non-linear inactivation. Recently, Wolfram Research Inc., the maker of Mathematica, has made its interactive program Mathematica Player free downloadable software. A user, who need not have a copy of Mathematica, can view and download any of the numerous graphic demonstrations from the Wolfram Demonstrations Project web site, and continuously manipulate their dynamic parameters with sliders on the screen. One set of five such demonstrations allows the user to generate and adjust the temperature profile of heat processes, modify the targeted organism's Weibullian survival parameters and immediately observe the corresponding semi-logarithmic survival curve and the equivalent time at a reference temperature, which can also be manipulated by a slider. This free program enables food microbiologists, technologists and engineers to examine a large number of heat processing options and assess their potential safety implications. Colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) and nanosheets with controlled thickness have recently emerged as an exciting new class of quantum-sized nanomaterials with substantially distinct optical properties compared to 0D quantum dots. Zn-based NPLs are an attractive heavy-metal-free alternative to the so far most widespread cadmium chalcogenide colloidal 2D semiconductor nanostructures, but their synthesis remains challenging to achieve. The authors describe herein, to the best of their knowledge, the first synthesis of highly stable ZnO NPLs with the atomically precise thickness, which for the smallest NPLs is 3.2 nm (corresponding to 12 ZnO layers). Furthermore, by means of dynamic nuclear polarization-enhanced solid-state 15N NMR, the original role of the benzamidine ligands in stabilizing the surface of these nanomaterials is revealed, which can bind to both the polar and non-polar ZnO facets, acting either as X- or L-type ligands, respectively. This bimodal stabilization allows obtaining hexagonal NPLs for which the surface energy of the facets is modulated by the presence of the ligands. Thus, in-depth study of the interactions at the organic–inorganic interfaces provides a deeper understanding of the ligand–surface interface and should facilitate the future chemistry of stable-by-design nano-objects. 相似文献
