Nutritional pharmacology and malignant disease: a therapeutic modality in patients with cancer

It is now established that certain nutrients have a significant effect on cellular metabolism and growth, tissue repair and regeneration, and modulation of host defences. So far, however, potential clinical benefits have been difficult to demonstrate. Nevertheless, the use of nutrients in combinations seems to have promise and may be associated with a reduction in infectious complications and length of hospital stay. Nutritional pharmacology in the future may be able to improve tumour response to chemotherapy and may minimize the metabolic effect of cachexia.     

Controlled external lumbar drain as treatment for therapy resistant intracranial hypertension--case report

The study investigated the psychological health level and related psychosocial factors of nurses. Through cluster sampling, 650 clinical nurses, who come from 5 city hospitals in Changsha, were interviewed with the Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90), The Life Event Scale, Type A Behavior Questionnaire, and The Social Support Rating Scale. The results indicated that subjects' average symptom score and most factor scores of SCL-90 were significantly higher than that of the chinese norm. Somatization, depression, and obsession are common psychological problems of the clinical nurses, and the psychological health level of middle age group was significantly lower than that of other groups. Regression analysis (both single factor and multiple factors) suggested that TH and CH scores on Type A Questionnaire as well as life event score on the life event score were negatively related to psychological health level while social support score was positively related to it. The influences of psychosocial factors on psychological health level of clinical nurses were discussed.     

Firm Performance and Information Technology Utilization in the Construction Industry

This paper, which is written to both researchers and practitioners, examines the impact of information technology (IT) on construction firm performance. Based on data collected from 74 construction firms, regression analysis is used to test the relationship between performance and IT. Analysis provides empirical evidence that IT is positively associated with firm performance, schedule performance, and cost performance. Firm performance is a composite score of several metrics of performance: schedule performance, cost performance, customer satisfaction, safety performance, and profit. The regression analysis shows that for every 1?unit increase in IT utilization, there is an increase of about 2, 5, and 3% in firm performance, schedule performance, and cost performance, respectively. No relationship is found between IT use and customer satisfaction, safety performance, and profitability.     

Prophylactic use of tropisetron or metoclopramide during adjuvant abdominal radiotherapy of seminoma stage I: a randomised, open trial in 23 patients

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein composed of two subunits, alpha and beta, linked together by a covalent bond. Ectopic production of hCG has been described in various histological types of cancer. Actually, these malignant tumors predominantly secrete the free beta subunit (hCG beta) and not hCG. Production of free hCG beta is especially found in patients with bladder, pancreas, uterine and lung tumors. In patients with neuroendocrine tumors, serum levels of free hCG beta are higher in gastrointestinal-pancreatic and lung tumors. The significance of ectopic production of hCG beta--epiphenomena or intrinsic biological role--remains unknown. Several reports on the similar structure of hCG beta and certain growth factors suggest that free hCG beta could have an effect on cell proliferation. Increased serum levels of the free alpha subunit are found mainly in patients with neuroendocrine tumors localized in the gut or lung. Serum levels may also be raised in patients with a pituitary tumor, but such production is often associated with a rise in other pituitary hormones. The free alpha subunit plays a role in embryon development and would stimulate production of prolactin by decidual cells. The free alpha subunit may also play a role in tumor growth.     

Elbow valgus stress radiography in an uninjured population

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if P300 latency is prolonged in geriatric depression and if longer P300 latency and deficits in initiation and errors of perseveration in depressed elderly patients are related to risk factors for vascular disease. METHOD: Geriatric patients with unipolar depression (N = 43) and elderly comparison subjects (N = 24) were assessed for depressive symptoms, cognitive functions, risk factors for vascular disease, and P300 latency. RESULTS: Depressed elderly patients had longer P300 latency than normal elderly subjects. In the depressed patients, P300 latency was related to deficits in initiation and errors in perseveration. Risk factors for vascular disease were associated not only with P300 latency but also with deficits in initiation and errors in perseveration. CONCLUSIONS: Functional impairment of the cortico-striato-pallido-thalamo-cortical pathways from vascular disease, implicated in late-life depressive disorders, may explain not only deficits in initiation and errors in perseveration but also longer P300 latency in depressed elderly patients. These results are preliminary and need further examination with brain imaging and more sensitive neuropsychological measures.     

Involvement of telomeric sequences in chromosomal aberrations

The genomes of higher eukaryotes are not homogeneous in terms of structure or function. Many examples of chromosomal regions particularly prone to involvement in aberrations have been reported. The molecular structures of some of these regions have now been determined, most notably the folate-sensitive fragile sites and FRA16B-a distamycin A-sensitive fragile site. In addition, a number of cytological studies suggest that telomeric sequences can in some circumstances be involved in chromosomal aberrations more frequently than expected. Here, the roles of telomeric DNA sequences, both terminal and interstitial, and telomerase in chromosomal aberration formation are reviewed.     

Video Respite: an innovative resource for family, professional caregivers, and persons with dementia

The development of a new and promising resource for family, professional caregivers, and persons with dementia is detailed in this article. The concept, Video Respite, refers to the initial goal of creating videotapes specifically for persons with dementia to capture and maintain their attention, enabling caregivers to have respite time. Ten 20-53-minute videotapes are described along with their potential benefits and limitations. Early research findings reveal that most persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD) watch and participate with the tapes, caregivers use the time for respite, and staff of SCU's report the tapes to be calming for the residents.     

Modulation of membrane currents and mechanical activity by niflumic acid in rat vascular smooth muscle

The effects of niflumic acid on whole-cell membrane currents and mechanical activity were examined in the rat portal vein. In freshly dispersed portal vein cells clamped at -60 mV in caesium (Cs+)-containing solutions, niflumic acid (1-100 microM) inhibited calcium (Ca2+)-activated chloride currents (IC1(Ca)) induced by caffeine (10 mM) and by noradrenaline (10 microM). In a potassium (K+)-containing solution and at a holding potential of - 10 mV, niflumic acid (10-100 microM) induced an outward K+ current (IK(ATP)) which was sensitive to glibenclamide (10-30 microM). At concentrations < 30 microM and at a holding potential of -2 mV, niflumic acid had no effect on the magnitude of the caffeine- or noradrenaline-stimulated current (IBK(Ca)) carried by the large conductance, Ca(2+)-sensitive K+ channel (BKCa). However, at a concentration of 100 microM, niflumic acid significantly inhibited IBK(Ca)) evoked by caffeine (10 mM) but not by NS1619 (1-(2'-hydroxy-5'-trifluoromethylphenyl)-5-trifluoromethyl-2(3 H) benzimidazolone; 20 microM). In Cs(+)-containing solutions, niflumic acid (10-100 microM) did not inhibit voltage-sensitive Ca2+ currents. In intact portal veins, niflumic acid (1-300 microM) inhibited spontaneous mechanical activity, an action which was partially antagonised by glibenclamide (1-10 microM), and contractions produced by noradrenaline (10 microM), an effect which was glibenclamide-insensitive. It is concluded that inhibition of ICl(Ca) and stimulation of IK(ATP) both contribute to the mechano-inhibitory actions of niflumic acid in the rat portal vein.     

Evaluation of transbronchial biopsy of the lung

The histo-autoradiographic study of the subfornical organ by incorporation of 3H-Leucine in normal and dehydrated rats shows the existence of a protein synthesis; this synthesis is more important in dehydrated rats. Other studies are necessary to determine the nature and role of the substance synthetized.
