A surveillance study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Campylobacter in a range of retail foods purchased in three Irish cities over a 20-month period between March 2001 and October 2002. In total 2391 food samples were analysed during this period. Campylobacter was isolated from 444 raw chicken (49.9%), 33 turkey (37.5%) and 11 duck samples (45.8%). Lower isolation rates of 7/221 (3.2%), 10/197 (5.1%) and 31/262 (11.8%) were observed for raw beef, pork and lamb, respectively. One sample of pork paté from 120 samples analysed (0.8%) was Campylobacter-positive. A total of three shellfish samples (oysters) from 129 raw specimens examined (2.3%) were found to contain Campylobacter. Low prevalences of the organism (0.9%) were also isolated from fresh mushrooms. Of 62 raw bulk tank milk samples analysed, Campylobacter was recovered in a single sample (1.6%). Campylobacter was not detected in any of the comminuted pork puddings, prepared vegetables and salads, retail sandwiches or cheeses made from unpasteurised milk. In total, 543 Campylobacter were isolated from all of the food samples analysed, of which 453 (83.4%) were confirmed as Campylobacter jejuni and the remaining 90 (16.6%) as Campylobacter coli.  相似文献

Ethanol extracts of Chardonnay grape and black raspberry seed flours were evaluated for their capacity to suppress lipid oxidation, preserve important fatty acids, and inhibit microbial growth. They were also tested for radical scavenging activity against DPPH and peroxyl radicals as reflected in oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), and total phenolic content (TPC). Both tested seed flour extracts suppressed lipid oxidation and rancidity development in fish oil. Black raspberry seed flour extract significantly reduced the degradation of biologically important n − 3 PUFA under accelerated oxidative conditions. Black raspberry and Chardonnay seed flour extracts at 165 and 160 μg seed flour equivalents/mL, respectively exhibited bacteriocidal activity against Escherichia coli and growth inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes under experimental conditions. Both seed flour extracts exhibited DPPH radical quenching activity and Chardonnay had the stronger ORAC of 663 μmol Trolox equivalents per gram seed flour and the higher TPC of 99 mg gallic acid equivalents/g flour. The data from this study suggest the potential for developing natural food preservatives from these seed flours for improving food stability, quality, safety, and consumer acceptance.  相似文献

Campylobacter enteritis is a zoonosis, an infectious disease transmissible under normal conditions from vertebrate animals to man, presenting a major global public health burden. In this study, Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) was employed to identify common genotypes in a collection of 600 Campylobacter isolates in order to investigate if profiles obtained from retail samples of foodstuffs matched genotypes causing illness in the community in Ireland. The Campylobacters were isolated from retail foodstuffs, and cases of gastroenteritis, over the same 20-month period in three population centres in Ireland. The major observation made was of a high level of PFGE-genotype heterogeneity; 236 SmaI discrete genotypes were found in 507 strains successfully analysed. Analysis of the PFGE profiles revealed 22 common profiles amongst food isolates and those causing enteritis in humans. These cojoint PFGE genotypes indicate that 56 (38%) of the human clinical isolates are genetically related to 129 (36%) of the food isolates. The identification of these recurrent PFGE types, in the sampled Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni populations, indicates that a high proportion of Campylobacter isolates found in foods of animal origin also occur in patients with symptoms of enteritis. This data adds weight to the epidemiological hypothesis that a high proportion of human Campylobacter cases are contracted via the handling and consumption of contaminated foodstuffs, in particular poultry.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to estimate heritabilities of milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and lactose in the first 3 parities and their genetic relationships with milk, fat, protein, and SCS in Canadian Holsteins. Data were a random sample of complete herds (60,645 test day records of 5,022 cows from 91 herds) extracted from the edited data set, which included 892,039 test-day records of 144,622 Holstein cows from 4,570 herds. A test-day animal model with multiple-trait random regression and the Gibbs sampling method were used for parameter estimation. Regression curves were modeled using Legendre polynomials of order 4. A total of 6 separate 4-trait analyses, which included MUN, lactose, or both (yield or percentage) with different combinations of production traits (milk, fat and protein yield, fat and protein percentages, and somatic cell score) were performed. Average daily heritabilities were moderately high for MUN (from 0.384 to 0.414), lactose kilograms (from 0.466 to 0.539), and lactose percentage (from 0.478 to 0.508). Lactose yield was highly correlated with milk yield (0.979). Lactose percentage and MUN were not genetically correlated with milk yield. However, lactose percentage was significantly correlated with somatic cell score (−0.202). The MUN was correlated with fat (0.425) and protein percentages (0.20). Genetic correlations among parities were high for MUN, lactose percentage, and yield. Estimated breeding values (EBV) of bulls for MUN were correlated with fat percentage EBV (0.287) and EBV of lactose percentage were correlated with lactation persistency EBV (0.329). Correlations between lactose percentage and MUN with fertility traits were close to zero, thus diminishing the potential of using those traits as possible indicators of fertility.  相似文献

Minimizing fresh raw water and wastewater effluent produced by industry has rigorously been studied over the past two to three decades. However, most studies have focused on rather theoretical illustration with little consideration of technical constraints in industry. Furthermore, use of massive industry data significantly increases the complexity of the problem, and no research paper has covered such a case study with practical solutions. This paper reviews the latest technology of water network synthesis and its applications, and provides a detailed guideline of the whole study procedure with a reference to case study based from refinery complex. Two main methodologies of water-pinch technology and a mathematical optimization programming are reviewed individually, and they are applied to a case study. Economic and operational constraints are embedded into optimization of water network synthesis in order to provide more reliable and achievable solutions for the minimization of fresh water consumption and reduction of waste water effluents. This generic approach can be similarly applied to other industries such as petroleum, steel, and paper manufacturing.  相似文献

The paper presents the results on the deposition of nanoscale structurally laminated CrN films using a novel multi pulse modulated pulsed power (MPP) magnetron sputtering technique. With the multi pulse MPP approach, thin films with a structural modulation in the nanometer range are obtained by alternately switching two (or even more) high power MPP pulses on the same target, which have different pulse lengths, frequencies and powers. Each pulse was turned on for a pulse repeat duration during which this given pulse shape was repeated. In this study, CrN films have been deposited in a closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering system using the multi pulse MPP technique by varying the pulse repeat duration of two different pulses. The CrN films were also deposited by dc magnetron sputtering (dcMS) and single pulse MPP techniques for comparison. The microstructure and properties of the films were characterized using glancing incident X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nanoindentation, and ball-on-disk wear tests. The structure and properties of the multi pulse MPP CrN films depended on the pulse repeat duration. The highest hardness of 30.5 GPa and an H/E ratio of 0.9 have been achieved in the multi pulse MPP CrN films. The wear rate of the single pulse MPP and multi pulse MPP CrN films decreased by a factor of 5.8–17 as compared to the dcMS CrN films.  相似文献

Measurements have been made of the drying rate of thin layers of cut grass, with forced convection of air at 250c and 50% relative humidity. From measurements of the exposed surface areas of the grass and the evaporation rates measured during drying, estimates have been made of the grasses' resistance to moisture transfer.

Some of the grasses had been mechanically treated, by conventional agricultural mower conditioners, to improve the drying rates. An expression has been derived relating resistance to moisture transfer to the conditioning treatment and physical characteristics of the grass.  相似文献

This work demonstrates catalytic synthesis of polyurethanes using 1,3‐dichlorodistannoxane catalysts ( 1 ) in carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon dioxide expanded liquids (CXL). Catalytic polyurethane synthesis was also performed in pure organic solvent (dimethylformamide) for comparison. In this study, mainly, 4, 4′‐methylene‐bis‐(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI) as the diisocyanate precursor and ethylene glycol (EG) as the diol precursor were used for polyurethane synthesis. In addition to MDI, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), toluene diisocyanate (TDI), and p‐isocyanatobenzylisocyanate (PIBI) were also used for polyurethane synthesis with different diols or triol in CO2. Polyurethanes with a molecular weight ranging from 3000 to 70,000 were synthesized depending upon the combination of diisocyanate and diol used. Comparable yields of polyurethanes were obtained using an all butyl group substituted ( 1a ) catalyst in CO2 (55 bars, 50°C) and in DMF (50°C). Additionally, the yield and polydispersity index (PDI) of polymer formed in neat CO2 was comparable with those synthesized in the largely used organic solvent DMF. Interestingly, catalyst 1a in CXL (55 bars, 50°C) gave higher yields, and polymers with lower PDI (1.19). Reactions carried out in scCO2 at 145 bars using PIBI and EG were found to be about three times faster than the reaction carried out in DMF. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
