Cells in the dorsal division of the medial superior temporal area (MSTd) have large receptive fields and respond to expansion/contraction, rotation, and translation motions. These same motions are generated as we move through the environment, leading investigators to suggest that area MSTd analyzes the optical flow. One influential idea suggests that navigation is achieved by decomposing the optical flow into the separate and discrete channels mentioned above, that is, expansion/contraction, rotation, and translation. We directly tested whether MSTd neurons perform such a decomposition by examining whether there are cells that are preferentially tuned to intermediate spiral motions, which combine both expansion/contraction and rotation components. The finding that many cells in MSTd are preferentially selective for spiral motions indicates that this simple three-channel decomposition hypothesis for MSTd does not appear to be correct. Instead, there is a continuum of patterns to which MSTd cells are selective. In addition, we find that MSTd cells maintain their selectivity when stimuli are moved to different locations in their large receptive fields. This position invariance indicates that MSTd cells selective for expansion cannot give precise information about the retinal location of the focus of expansion. Thus, individual MSTd neurons cannot code, in a precise fashion, the direction of heading by using the location of the focus of expansion. The only way this navigational information could be accurately derived from MSTd is through the use of a coarse, population encoding. Positional invariance and selectivity for a wide array of stimuli suggest that MSTd neurons encode patterns of motion per se, regardless of whether these motions are generated by moving objects or by motion induced by observer locomotion.  相似文献

Replacement of the pyridinium ring of 6,11-ethanobenzo[b]quinolizinium cations with thiazolium (4a and 4b) and N-methylimidazolium (4c and 4d) resulted in equipotent compounds in the [3H]TCP binding assay. The corresponding N-methyl-1,2,4-triazolium analogs were less potent in this assay. The thiazolium derivative 4b, with a Ki = 2.9 nM, is being evaluated as a possible neuroprotective N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) antagonist.  相似文献

Melatonin deacetylase, an enzyme activity recently discovered in the Xenopus laevis retina, regulates local melatonin levels. The deacetylase occurs in retina, retinal pigment epithelium, and skin, all sites of melatonin action, and is widely distributed among vertebrates. We have solubilized the enzyme from Xenopus retina and pigment epithelium using nonionic detergents, and have developed a specific enzyme assay. We have characterized the enzyme and now report that the deacetylase is relatively specific for melatonin and is inhibited by the melatonin precursor N-acetylserotonin and the product of the deacetylase, 5-methoxytryptamine. Inhibition of deacetylase activity by eserine (physostigmine) suggests a relationship between deacetylase and cholinesterase activities. However, among a variety of cholinesterase inhibitors tested, only eserine inhibits the deacetylase. Furthermore, eserine is much less potent as an inhibitor of the deacetylase than the cholinesterases, and purified cholinesterases failed to deacetylate melatonin. We also show that melatonin deacetylase and aryl acylamidase (an enzyme related to cholinesterases) activities are differentially extractable from Xenopus ocular tissues, and that they exhibit different pH optima and inhibition profiles. Our results provide an initial characterization of the Xenopus retinal melatonin deacetylase, and indicate that deacetylase activity is distinct from cholinesterase and aryl acylamidase activities.  相似文献

In vivo dosimetry performed with semiconductor detectors is a reliable method for patient dose control. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the perturbations introduced in the patient's absorbed dose distribution by three types of commercially available diodes (Isorad, Sun Nuclear Corp.; model 114200, 114300 and 114400) from the same company and to present possible solutions for minimizing this side-effect.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Clearance of large molecules from the interstitial space is an important function of lymphatics and is affected by local pathologic changes. OBJECTIVE: To determine if the clearance rate of interstitially injected albumin is correlated to tumour characteristics and outcome in women with invasive breast cancer. METHOD: In a consecutive series of women coming to biopsy for suspected breast cancer, technetium-tagged albumin was injected into the tissue adjacent to the palpable mass. The isotope disappearance rate was measured over two hours. Also assessed were the maximum vessel density (MVD-using Factor VIII polyclonal antisera), the proliferation rate (using Ki-67 antisera), node status, tumour size, histologic and nuclear grade, mitotic rate, and p53 and c-erbB-2 oncoproteins. All patients were followed until relapse and for a minimum of 10 years. RESULTS: In multivariate analysis, an association between relapse-free survival and isotope clearance rate was suggested (p = 0.024). The best outcome was seen in patients with the least isotope clearance. Node status, size, histologic and nuclear grade, and mitotic rate correlated with survival. MVD did not correlate with survival and was inversely related to the isotope clearance rate. Tumour proliferation rate, and the c-erbB-2 and p53 oncoproteins did not relate to outcome. CONCLUSION: The role of lymphatics in breast cancer is difficult to study. Measurement of interstitial clearance may be a useful technique and could be a prognostic factor.  相似文献
