Gain and fluorescence characteristics of flowing CO2laser systems

Single-pass gain has been measured for flowing CO2, CO2-N2, CO2-He, CO2-N2-He, and CO2-N2-H2mixes. The gain for CO2-N2mixes varies as d^-0.9, wheredis the tube diameter. The diameter dependence of the gain is less pronounced for CO2- N2-He mixes; a peak gain of 4.7 dB/m was obtained in a 1/2 in diam tube. Fluorescence data indicate that the upper laser level population is saturated at 100 mA in all cases. The addition of He, H2, or O2depopulates the lower laser level; helium further increases the population of the upper laser level. The addition of CO increases the population of the upper laser level, probably by resonant transfer from the excited vibrational states of CO.     

Observational and sociometric measures of peer popularity and their relationship to egocentric communication in female preschoolers.

Tested the relationship between popularity and communicative egocentrism with female preschoolers, and assessed the relationship between communicative egocentrism and 2 popularity measures: (a) a realistic measure of actual classroom interaction and (b) a sociometric measure of preferred playmates. Ss were 60 white middle-class 3-5 yr old female preschoolers. Results indicate that communicative egocentrism was significantly related to the observational measure of peer popularity even when the common effect of IQ was removed. Communicative egocentrism, however, was not significantly related to the sociometric measure of popularity. The possibility of a curvilinear relationship existing between communicative egocentrism and a sociometric measure of popularity is advanced. The effect of threat upon interpersonal bargaining.

The effect of threat on the process of bargaining was investigated experimentally by asking Ss to imagine proceeding across a certain route on a map and having various experiences. Threat was seen to affect bargaining detrimentally. In that regard, cooperative ventures were seen to be safer than competitive ones. Materials for a Supersonic Transport

The concepts for the Mach 3 supersonic transport in terms of the conventional material properties with which the metallurgist is familiar are interpreted qualitatively. The alloys which are promising candidates for this application are indicated. A procedure for rating the alloys as to their degree of applicability is suggested, and the additional information necessary before a final selection can be made is discussed.     

Education and distributive justice: Some reflections on grading systems.

Begins with the unusual assumption that it may be possible to allocate merit, and then raises the question of how merit shall be distributed (i.e., Who merits an increase in merit?). This question is the basis for a discussion of distributive justice in education which focuses on the distribution of symbols of educational merit—grades. The article discusses the social function of the artificially created shortage of high marks and considers different characteristics of grading systems. The effects of cooperative and competitive distributive systems are summarized. The article concludes with the question: If the competitive-hierarchical atmosphere (induced by the competitive distribution system used wih respect to grades in the classroom) is not good for our children, is it good for us? Precision low cost V block for heavy loads

A new type of V block is described. It is constructed from separate elements and is suitable for use with heavy loads. Its accuracy is the same as conventional monolithic V blocks while its cost is much lower than that of commercial precision V blocks.     

A Stock Location Model for Dual Address Order Picking Systems

A model is formulated to evaluate alternative stock levels and item locations for dedicated storage warehouses where storage and retrieval transactions are interleaved to economize on travel of the order picking vehicle. The model can be used to measure the order picking and inventory cost effects of warehouse layouts representing alternatives to application of economic lot sizing and cube per order index storage assignment. A simple, sequential search heuristic is proposed for generating such alternative warehouse layouts and applied to a sample problem.     

Attention mechanisms mediate the syntactic priming effect in auditory word identification.

Investigated the syntactic priming effect and the involvement of attention in that process by testing identification of white noise-masked Hebrew words. Targets were either syntactically congruent or syntactically incongruent with the structure of the sentence. Relative to a neutral condition, similar facilitation and inhibition was found for congruent and incongruent targets, respectively. When syntactic congruency was blocked, the inhibition was attenuated, whereas the facilitation remained the same. A 350-msec silent interstimulus interval between context and target increased inhibition without affecting facilitation. It is suggested that both the facilitation and the inhibition effects of syntactic priming are based on a veiled controlled process of generating expectations.
