This study evaluates the synergistic antifungal effects between thyme essential oils and Lactobacillus plantarum cell‐free supernatant (LCFS) against Penicillium spp. and in situ antifungal activity in rice grains. Thyme essential oil and LCFS showed remarkable antifungal activities against Penicillium spp. with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 40 and 80 µL/mL, respectively. The analysis of fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index showed the antifungal synergism between thyme essential oil and LCFS against Penicillium spp. with FIC index of 0.5. This synergism also resulted in fourfold reduction in their MICs when applied in combination. The antifungal modes of action were characterized by observing the changes in cell membrane permeability and degradation of fungal cell wall. The combination of thyme essential oil and LCFS (2 × MIC of each) showed remarkable in situ antifungal effect and completely inhibit the growth of Penicillium in rice seeds. The results suggested the possible applications of the observed synergism on actual crops.
Practical applications
Essential oils are used as preservative in food industry and high concentration of essential oil is associated with negative organoleptic characteristics. This study presented a novel approach for synergistic antifungal effects by using the combination of thyme essential oil and Lactobacillus plantarum cell‐free supernatant (LCFS) against Penicillium spp. and systematic evaluation of the antifungal effect by using fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index method. This approach will be a role model for future research on synergism and overcome the major drawbacks of using live bacteria and the negative effects arising from antimicrobial activities of essential oils. 相似文献993.
In this paper, specific stress–strain curves were predicted for viscose, cotton, and polyester yarns spun by ring and rotor technologies. The average fiber-specific stress–strain curves were used to predict yarn-specific stress–strain curves. The predicted yarn-specific stress–strain curves captured the experimental yarn-specific stress–strain curves well both in shape and position for the three studied yarn types. However, higher prediction error was observed relatively in polyester yarns due to more slippage of fibers in these yarns. Despite the development of artificial neural network and computer simulation models that predict yarn tensile properties, the mathematical model is still very important being the base for all models. In this research, three mathematical models have been applied for evaluation of coefficient of fiber strength utilization in staple spun yarns before break at same value of yarn strains. The experiments were conducted on cotton, viscose and polyester fibers, and yarns. The results indicated that our model exhibited least prediction error followed by Pan’s and Frydrych’s models for cotton and viscose but for polyester, Pan’s model produced least error followed by Frydrych’s model and our model. The superiority of our model might be resulted from the introduction of the phenomena of fiber directional distribution in the staple spun yarns. 相似文献

Polyphenols as phytochemicals have gained significant importance owing to several associated health benefits with regard to lifestyle diseases and oxidative stress. To date, the development of a single standard method for efficient and rapid extraction of polyphenols from plant matrices has remained a challenge due to the inherent limitations of various conventional extraction methods. The exploitation of polyphenols as bioactive compounds at various commercial levels has motivated scientists to explore more eco‐friendly, efficient, and cost‐effective extraction techniques, based on a green extraction approach. The current review aims to provide updated technical information about extraction mechanisms, their advantages and disadvantages, and factors affecting efficiencies, and also presents a comparative overview of applications of the following modern green extraction techniques—supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasound‐assisted extraction, microwave‐assisted extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, and pressurized hot water extraction—as alternatives to conventional extraction methods for polyphenol extraction. These techniques are proving to be promising for the extraction of thermolabile phenolic compounds due to their advantages over conventional, time‐consuming, and laborious extraction techniques, such as reduced solvent use and time and energy consumption and higher recovery rates with lower operational costs. The growing interest in plant‐derived polyphenols prompts continual search for green and economically feasible modern extraction techniques. Modern green extraction techniques represent promising approaches by virtue of overcoming current limitations to the exploitation of polyphenols as bioactive compounds to explore their wide‐reaching applications on an industrial scale and in emerging global markets. Future research is needed in order to remove the technical barriers to scale‐up the processes for industrial needs by increasing our understanding and improving the design of modern extraction operations. 相似文献

Lactic acid bacteria isolated from camel milk exhibit remarkable probiotic and exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing characteristics. The health-promoting benefits of exopolysaccharide-producing probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum isolated from camel milk used for making low-fat akawi cheese were investigated. Three low-fat akawi cheeses were made using traditional culture (non-EPS-producing, EPS?), commercial EPS-producing (MEPS+), and camel milk EPS-producing (CEPS+) cultures. α-Amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities, antioxidant activities, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition, and antiproliferative activity were determined. Cheese made with CEPS+ culture exhibited comparable α-amylase inhibition to that of cheeses made with MEPS+. Scavenging rates of cheese made with EPS+ cultures were higher than those of cheese made with EPS? cultures. The percentage of α-glucosidase inhibition ranged from >45% at 0 d to ~55% at 21 d of storage. After 7 d of storage, the scavenging rate in CEPS+ cheese increased >60% by ABTS assay [2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] and >20% by DPPH assay (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl). Throughout storage, cheese made with EPS+ cultures showed higher ACE-inhibition activity compared with EPS? cultures. Cheese made with CEPS+ showed ACE inhibition >70% after 7 d of storage. Antiproliferation activity of CEPS+ cheese increased from 38 to 48% during 7 d of storage and was maintained above 45% with prolonged storage. Low-fat akawi cheese produced with these cultures exhibited similar or greater health-promoting benefits compared with cheese made using commercial starter cultures. The occurrence of nocardial mastitis, mostly in the context of outbreaks, has been reported in many countries. However, there is a paucity of reports regarding detailed characterization of Nocardia cyriacigeorgica from bovine mastitis. Thus, herein we report characteristics, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, molecular identification, and pathogenicity of N. cyriacigeorgica isolated from an outbreak of clinical mastitis in a dairy herd in northern China. A total of 182 (80.2%) lactating cows had clinical mastitis with severe inflammation and firmness of the udder, reduced milk production, and anorexia, with no apparent clinical response to common antibiotics. Out of 22 mastitic milk samples submitted to our laboratory, 12 N. cyriacigeorgica were isolated and characterized using standard microbiological analysis, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, random amplified polymorphic DNA PCR analysis, biochemical assays, and antibiotic susceptibility testing. Additionally, in vivo experiments were done to determine pathogenicity of these clinical mastitis isolates. All isolates were resistant to ampicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, ciprofloxacin, minocycline, rifampicin, and aminoglycosides (type VI pattern). Additionally, intramammary inoculation of mice with N. cyriacigeorgica caused chronic inflammatory changes, including hyperemia, edema, and infiltration of lymphocytes and neutrophils, as well as hyperplasia of lymph nodules in mammary glands. Therefore, we concluded that N. cyriacigeorgica was involved in the current outbreak of mastitis.
