The authors describe a case of spontaneous chylothorax occurring in a 50-year-old woman after stretching exercises of the upper limbs. A positive diagnosis was made based on pleural aspirate and a biochemical study of the pleural liquid (triglycerides > 3 gm/l). The chylothorax is said to be spontaneous when detailed investigations are negative. The outcome was satisfactory with complete regression of the symptoms after pleural aspirate and a low diet in long chain triglycerides but the authors recall that treatment may be surgical in cases of multiple recurrence. 相似文献

Epidemiological studies have suggested that frequent olive oil consumption may be a protective factor against lung cancer formation. Squalene, a characteristic compound in olive oil, is an inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase activity and has been proposed to inhibit the farnesylation of ras oncoproteins. The present study investigated the effect of dietary olive oil and squalene in a mouse lung tumorigenesis model. Female A/J mice were fed AIN-76A diets containing 5% corn oil (control), 19.6% olive oil, or 2% squalene starting at 3 weeks before a single dose of 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) (103 mg/kg, i.p.). Animals were maintained on their respective diets throughout the study. At 16 weeks after NNK administration, 100% of the mice in the control group had lung tumors with a tumor multiplicity of 16 tumors per mouse. The olive oil and squalene diets significantly (P < 0.05) decreased the lung tumor multiplicity by 46 and 58%, respectively. The squalene diet significantly (P < 0.05) decreased lung hyperplasia by 70%. In mice fed a diet containing 2% squalene for 3 weeks, the activation of NNK was increased by 1.4- and 2.0-fold in lung and liver microsomes, respectively, but its relationship to the inhibition of carcinogenesis is not clear. These results demonstrate that dietary olive oil and squalene can effectively inhibit NNK-induced lung tumorigenesis. 相似文献

Activity-independent and activity-dependent mechanisms work in concert to regulate neuronal growth, ensuring the formation of accurate synaptic connections. CPG15, a protein regulated by synaptic activity, functions as a cell-surface growth-promoting molecule in vivo. In Xenopus laevis, CPG15 enhanced dendritic arbor growth in projection neurons, with no effect on interneurons. CPG15 controlled growth of neighboring neurons through an intercellular signaling mechanism that requires its glycosylphosphatidylinositol link. CPG15 may represent a new class of activity-regulated, membrane-bound, growth-promoting proteins that permit exquisite spatial and temporal control of neuronal structure. 相似文献

The results of combined scintigraphy in which indium-111-labeled leukocytes and technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate were used were compared with the results of cultures of open bone at 102 sites of delayed union or non-union, to determine the effectiveness of this combination as a preoperative indicator of osteomyelitis. There were twenty-five true-positive, fifty-nine true-negative, eleven false-positive, four false-negative, and three indeterminate interpretations, yielding, for the diagnosis of osteomyelitis, a sensitivity of 86 per cent, a specificity of 84 per cent, an accuracy of 82 per cent, a positive predictive value of 69 per cent, and a negative predictive value of 94 per cent. There were few false-negative scans; false-positive results were most likely at a metaphyseal site adjacent to a joint in which there was post-traumatic arthropathy, at the site of a failed arthrodesis, and at the site of an unstable delayed union or non-union. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to determine the prevalence and appearance of elastofibroma dorsi in an elderly patient population (n = 258) who underwent CT of the chest for reasons other than to evaluate posterolateral chest wall pain, stiffness, or a mass. CONCLUSION: Five elastofibromas were detected in four patients; none of these elastofibromas were noted at initial examination. Our study suggests that the prevalence of elastofibroma dorsi revealed by CT is 2%, which is lower than the 11-24% found in autopsy series but higher than expected for such a rare tumor. Elastofibroma dorsi typically has a layered appearance on CT; however, in our study, homogeneous soft-tissue attenuation was noted. The diagnosis is often missed prospectively. Familiarity with the location and imaging appearance of elastofibroma dorsi may enhance detection and characterization of posterolateral chest wall masses in elderly patients. 相似文献

Although hydropathy analysis of the skeletal muscle chloride channel protein, ClC-1, initially predicted 13 potential membrane spanning domains (D1 to D13), later topological studies have suggested that domain D4 is extracellular and that D13, conserved in all eukaryotic ClC channels, is located within the extensive cytoplasmic tail that makes up the carboxyl terminus of the protein. We have examined the effect of deleting D13 (DeltaD13) and the function of the carboxyl tail by removing the final 72 (fs923X), 100 (fs895X), 125 (L869X), 398 (N596X), and 420 (Q574X) amino acids from rat ClC-1. Appropriate cDNA constructs were prepared and expressed using the baculovirus Sf9 insect cell system. Patch clamp analysis of chloride currents in Sf9 cells showed that only relatively insubstantial changes could be attributed to the expressed fs923X, fs895X, and DeltaD13 mutants compared with wild type rat ClC-1. For N596X and Q574X, however, adequate mRNA could be detected, but neither patch clamp nor polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed corresponding protein production. By contrast, expression of L869X was demonstrable by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, but no chloride conductance attributable to it could be detected. Overall, our results indicate that the domain D13 is dispensable, as are the final 100 amino acids, but not the final 125 amino acids or more, of the carboxyl tail. Some essential region of unknown significance, therefore, appears to reside in the 18 amino acids after D13, from Lys877 to Arg894. 相似文献
