Metal diffraction gratings as laser power or energy dividers

The authors survey published results on the application of metal diffraction gratings as laser power or energy dividers when the laser beam is split into two approximately equal pans. The normal incidence of laser radiation on metal diffraction gratings of various profiles in the case of three propagating diffraction orders n=0, ±1 is discussed, along with the case of oblique incidence with only two propagating diffraction orders n=0 and n =–1.Translated from Izmeritel'naya Tekhnika, No. 2, pp. 22–26, February, 1994.     

A base-band NDS electrode configuration for HACT devices

Heterostructure Acoustic Charge Transport (HACT) devices have been fabricated with a new nondestructive sense (NDS) electrode structure that provides for the recovery of base-band signals without the use of an integrating capacitor. This electrode structure provides an output signal comprising an RF carrier at the SAW frequency, amplitude modulated by the sampled input signal which has been delayed by a period proportional to the output electrodes distance from the input diode. The output of the NDS electrode structure is subsequently demodulated to provide the base-band signal     

Viral dynamics of primary viremia and antiretroviral therapy in simian immunodeficiency virus infection

Mathematical modeling of viral replication dynamics, based on sequential measurements of levels of virion-associated RNA in plasma during antiretroviral treatment, has led to fundamental new insights into human immunodeficiency virus type 1 pathogenesis. We took advantage of the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected macaque model to perform detailed measurements and mathematical modeling during primary infection and during treatment of established infection with the antiretroviral drug (R)-9-(2-phosphonylmethoxypropyl)adenine (PMPA). The calculated clearance half-life for productively infected cells during resolution of the peak viremia of primary infection was on the order of 1 day, with slightly shorter clearance half-lives calculated during PMPA treatment. Viral reproduction rates upon discontinuation of PMPA treatment after 2 weeks were approximately twofold greater than those obtained just prior to initiation of treatment in the same animals, likely reflecting accumulation of susceptible target cells during treatment. The basic reproductive ratio (R0) for the spread of SIV infection in vivo, which represents the number of productively infected cells derived from each productively infected cell at the beginning of infection, was also estimated. This parameter quantifies the extent to which antiviral therapy or vaccination must limit the initial spread of virus to prevent establishment of chronic disseminated infection. The results thus provide an important guide for efforts to develop vaccines against SIV and, by extension, human immunodeficiency virus.     

Bronchiolo-alveolar cell carcinoma with apparent response to chemotherapy to anti-tuberculosis

Pigmented vulvar lesions were observed in a child during a sexual abuse evaluation. Gross examination of the lesions appeared most consistent with bowenoid papulosis; however, biopsy confirmed the lesions to be pigmented apocrine hamartomas. To our knowledge, these rare and benign tumors have never been described as pigmented, but should be added to the differential diagnosis of pigmented vulvar lesions.     

Endometrioid carcinoma arising from endometriosis of the sigmoid colon during estrogenic treatment

A case of endometrioid carcinoma arising from endometriosis of the sigmoid colon is reported. The patient had been treated with unopposed continuous estrogen injection for twenty years after bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy because of severe endometriosis. The pathology, pertinent literature and implications of the present case are discussed.     

Serum vanadium levels in chronic hemodialysis patients

Serum vanadium, aluminum, silicon and beta 2-microglobulin levels as well as the red cell count, hemoglobin and systolic blood pressure were simultaneously measured in 80 chronic hemodialysis patients. The serum vanadium level was positively correlated with the serum levels of aluminum, silicon and beta 2-microglobulin as well as the systolic blood pressure, and was inversely correlated with the red cell count and hemoglobin. The mean serum vanadium level was 18.4 +/- 7.6 ng/ml before hemodialysis and decreased to 13.0 +/- 5.30 ng/ml at the completion of dialysis. The dialysate vanadium level increased from 0.4 +/- 0.2 (inflow) to 1.0 +/- 0.4 ng/ml (outflow). It was concluded that vanadium was transferred from blood to dialysate when purified water was used in the preparation of the dialysate.     

Effect of postoperative mydriatics on the iris

PURPOSE: To assess the role postoperative mydriatics play after extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in causing iris modifications and in controlling inflammation. SETTING: Outpatients Department, Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland. METHODS: The prospective study comprised 136 patients who had standardized ECCE. Half the patients used a mydriatic for 2 weeks postoperatively. Anterior chamber activity, pain, and eye redness were evaluated at 2 weeks postoperatively; pupil shape, peripheral anterior synechias, IOL position, and iris adhesions, at 6 weeks. RESULTS: Iris-lens adhesions were significantly more common in the group using a mydriatic. There was no difference between the two groups in postoperative inflammation. CONCLUSION: Mydriatics should not be used routinely after ECCE with posterior chamber IOL implantation.     

Two methods of determining the ultimate long-term shear strength of clayey soils

A comparison is made between different alternate schemes for determination of the strength of soils possessing rheological properties on the basis of our own experimental data. An original method is proposed for determination of the ultimate long-term strength from tests on the conditionally instantaneous failure of soil after preliminary deformation in a creep regime, as well as from tests in a controlled-deformation regime. Increasing the service properties of weld joints by electrohydroimpulse treatment

Known examples of the positive influence of electrohydroimpulse treatment on the quality of weld joints of various steels, particularly including an increase in their long-term and cyclic strength and also corrosion resistance, are analyzed. It is shown that in this case there is a reduction in residual macro- and micro-stresses and also a change in the parameters of the dislocation structure of the joint metal in the direction of stabilization of it.Translated from Problemy Prochnosti, No. 4, pp. 119–123, April, 1996.
