Hydrogen Resistance of Steels Alloyed with Nitrogen

We study the resistance of stainless steels with different contents of nitrogen after plasma-arc remelting to hydrogen degradation. The dependence of the mechanical properties of steels on the content of nitrogen is quite complicated, which is explained by changes in the phase composition. In the analyzed collection of steels (Kh18AN9, Kh20AN15, Kh18AG10, and Kh18AG15), Kh18AG15 steel has the best combination of the characteristics of strength and plasticity in hydrogen.     

Association between inflammatory bowel disease and sarcoidosis. Report of two cases and review of the literature

BACKGROUND: Common etiopathogenic factors may explain the association of systemic sarcoidosis with inflammatory bowel disease. METHODS: We report two cases of such an association: one of sarcoidosis that developed 2 years after proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis and one of sarcoidosis and Crohn's colitis. Factors like increased cellular immunity or circulating immunocomplexes or autoantibodies may have a role. Exogenous agents or familiarity may also be involved. CONCLUSIONS: It is postulated that the association between sarcoidosis and inflammatory bowel disease (both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) does not occur by chance alone and that the two conditions may share some genetic or immunologic alterations. The two diseases, however, follow an independent clinical course.     

Calcification of subcutaneously implanted collagens in relation to cytotoxicity,cellular interactions and crosslinking

In general, calcification of biomaterials occurs through an interaction of host and implanted material factors, but up to now the real origin of pathologic calcification is unknown. In this study we aimed to investigate incidence of calcification of (crosslinked) dermal sheep collagens (DSCs) with respect to their specific properties, during subcutaneous implantation in rats. Three types of DSCs were commercially obtained: non-crosslinked DSC (NDSC), and DSC crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GDSC) and hexamethylenediisocyanate (HDSC). NDSC, HDSC and GDSC were (enzymatically) tissue culture pretreated to eliminate their cytotoxic products. Beside this, crosslinking methods were modified to optimize mechanical properties and to decrease cytotoxicity, which resulted in HDSC^* and GDSC^*. Furthermore, DSC was crosslinked by activation of the carboxylic groups, i.e. by means of acyl azide and carbodiimide, resulting in AaDSC and CDSC, respectively. After implantation of HDSCs and GDSCs a relation between cytotoxicity and calcification of crosslinked DSC could be made. No relation was found between cellular infiltration of DSCs and calcification. However, from the use of different types and modification of crosslinking methods it might be concluded that calcification is mainly related to stable crosslinks, i.e. to the chemical properties of the obtained material.     

A study of ionic defects in modified lead titanate ceramics

Pb_1–x Ca _x [(Co_0.5W_0.5)_0·05Ti_0.95]O₃ ceramics with x = 0.24, 0.30 and 0.35, are prepared by a solid state reaction of oxides. Deviations from nominal chemical compositions and formation of segregated phases different from modified lead titanate perovskites, are studied. Pyro- and non-pyroelectric currents excited in the material by a thermal wave are investigated and related to mobility of electrical charges in the materials.     

Improved-performance, InGaAs/InGaAsP (/spl lambda/=980 nm) asymmetric broad-waveguide diode lasers via waveguide-core doping

Doping the waveguide core (p=2/spl times/10/sup 17/ cm/sup -1/) in asymmetric-waveguide InGaAs/InGaAsP, two-quantum-well diode lasers (/spl lambda/=980 nm) raises the injection efficiency to 90% and decreases the threshold-current density, J/sub th/. For 2 mm long, 100 /spl mu/m wide stripe, uncoated chips J/sub th/ decreases from /spl sim/188 A/cm/sup 2/ to /spl sim/150 A/cm/sup 2/. High characteristic temperatures for J/sub th/ and the slope efficiency are obtained: T/sub 0/=215K and T/sub 1/=600K.
