The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation from the aerial parts of Origanum minutiflorum O Schwarz & PH Davis, an endemic species in Turkey, was analysed for its antimicrobial activity in vitro. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis of the essential oil resulted in the identification of 34 constituents accounting for 961.5 mL L?1 of the oil, the major compounds present being carvacrol (793.4 mL L?1), p‐cymene (32.6 mL L?1) and γ‐terpinene (21.4 mL L?1). The in vitro antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was investigated in order to evaluate its efficacy against 16 bacteria and two yeasts, using disc diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration methods. The essential oil showed strong antimicrobial activity against all test micro‐organisms except Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Its main components carvacrol and p‐cymene were also assayed for their antimicrobial activities. Carvacrol exhibited comparable activity to the crude oil, proving it to be the main component responsible for the biological activity observed. This study demonstrates the in vitro antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of this endemic remedy against a wide spectrum of clinically important micro‐organisms, including pathogenic yeasts, being the first report on the anticandidal properties of the essential oil of O. minutiflorum. Textiles, with appropriate light absorbers and suitable finishing methods, can be used as ultraviolet (UV) protection materials. In this study, we investigated the effects of nano‐TiO2 particles on the UV‐protective and structural properties of polypropylene (PP) textile filaments. Master batches of PP/TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by melt compounding before spinning, and filaments incorporating 0.3, 1, and 3% TiO2 nanoparticles were spun in a pilot melt‐spinning machine. The structural properties of the nanocomposite fibers were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffractometry, differential scanning calorimetry, and tensile tests. The UV‐protection factor was determined to evaluate the UV‐protective properties of the filaments. In conclusion, although the structure and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite filaments were slightly affected by the addition of nano‐TiO2, the UV‐protective properties of the PP filaments improved after treatment with nano‐TiO2, and the nanocomposite filaments exhibited excellent UV protection. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The external walls and roof of a building are the interface between its interior and the outdoor environment. Insulation of the external walls and roof is the most cost-effective way of controlling the outside elements to make homes more comfortable. Although insulation is generally accepted as a factor increasing the building costs, with the calculations we have shown that this is not the case. Fuel consumption and operational costs are reduced by increasing the thickness of the external walls and roof (ceiling), despite an increase in the investment costs. According to Turkish Standard Number 825 (TS 825), there are four different degree-day (DD) regions, and the required heat loads for the buildings in these regions exhibit large differences. Therefore, a method based on costs is needed for the determination of optimum insulation thicknesses of different DD regions. In this study, optimum insulation thicknesses for different DD regions of Turkey, namely, Izmir (DD: 1450), Bursa (DD: 2203), Eski?ehir (DD: 3215) and Erzurum (DD: 4856), have been determined for a lifetime of N years, maximizing the present worth value of annual energy savings for insulated external walls. 相似文献

Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is increasingly applied to synthetic polymers to characterize chain‐end or in‐chain substituents, distinguish isobaric and isomeric species, and determine macromolecular connectivities and architectures. For confident structural assignments, the fragmentation mechanisms of polymer ions must be understood, as they provide guidelines on how to deduce the desired information from the fragments observed in MS/MS spectra. This article reviews the fragmentation pathways of synthetic polymer ions that have been energized to decompose via collisionally activated dissociation (CAD), the most widely used activation method in polymer analysis. The compounds discussed encompass polystyrenes, poly(2‐vinyl pyridine), polyacrylates, poly(vinyl acetate), aliphatic polyester copolymers, polyethers, and poly(dimethylsiloxane). For a number of these polymers, several substitution patterns and architectures are considered, and questions regarding the ionization agent and internal energy of the dissociating precursor ions are also addressed. Competing and consecutive dissociations are evaluated in terms of the structural insight they provide about the macromolecular structure. The fragmentation pathways of the diverse array of polymer ions examined fall into three categories, viz. (1) charge‐directed fragmentations, (2) charge‐remote rearrangements, and (3) charge‐remote fragmentations via radical intermediates. Charge‐remote processes predominate. Granules were prepared using three different binders, pregelatinized starch (PGS), gelatin (GEL), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (K30) by a fluidized bed method. As a quantitative measurement of mechanical strength or abrasion resistance, granules were subjected to a friability test for certain periods of time, and friability indexes (FI) as a function of time were calculated. The data obtained were analyzed by applying standard mathematical models. According to the derived parameters of the logistic and Weibull models, which fit best to the data, mechanical strength of granules made with K30 was observed to be lower than that of the granules of PGS and GEL which have similar values of model parameters. Flow properties, consolidation, and compressibility behaviors of unfriabled (UFR) and friabled (FR) granules, which were selected based upon their Weibull time parameter, were investigated as comparative. The flow rate of granules decreased due to diminishing particle size depending on binder type and friability, but the values of angle of repose were within the acceptable limits. Regarding consolidation behavior, the change of relative density vs. the number of taps, i.e., packing rate for FR granules of GEL was slower than that of its UFR form, whereas FR granules of PGS and K30 showed faster change in relative density compared to their UFR forms. According to the parameters obtained from the Heckel equation, PGS and K30 were found to produce softer, more plastic and readily deformable granules than GEL, and the compressibility of their FR forms was not influenced negatively. 相似文献

Vascular access thrombosis is a frequent complication in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Genetic mutations, inflammation, and changes in the vascular wall are some factors that are thought to increase thrombosis risk. In this study, we tested for possible relationships between vascular thrombosis and some known thrombophilic mutation/polymorphisms in coagulation factors [factor V Leiden (FVL), prothrombin (Pt) G20210A, methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR C677T), factor XIII (F-XIII) Val34Leu, alpha-fibrinogen (AF) Thr312Ala, factor VII (F-VII) R353Q] and angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) gene in our HD patients. Patients who had experienced at least 3 episodes of AVF thrombosis composed of the study group, and patients who had never encountered this complication composed of the control group. None of the patients in either group had a history of diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, dialysis-related amyloidosis, or vasculitis. In order to find the frequency of F-XIII Val34Leu, AF Thr312Ala, and F-VII R353Q polymorphisms in our population, we also searched persons without renal disease or history of thrombosis (normal group). Results are summarized in Table. There was a tendency toward thrombotic mutation/polymorphisms in the study group for FVL, Pt G20210A, ACE I/D, and AF Thr312Ala. We suggest that patients who develop recurrent AVF thrombosis should be screened for the above-mentioned factors and investigated for other possible risk factors. This screening would allow more effective focus on prophylaxis.

We have previously demonstrated that various subtypes of AML children respond to high-dose methylprednisolone (HDMP; 20-30 mg/kg/day) which could induce in vivo differentiation of myeloid leukemic cells to mature granulocytes. In this study we have evaluated whether apoptosis occurs in AML cells of patients treated by HDMP using morphological criteria. For light and electron microscopic examination bone marrow aspirates were obtained four days and two weeks after methylprednisolone (30 mg/kg/day) treatment from two children with newly diagnosed AML (AML-M3 and AML-M4). In both patients maturation of leukemic cells has previously been reported four days (in patient with AML-M3) and two weeks (in patient with AML-M4) after HDMP treatment. Electron microscopy revealed the characteristic ultrastructural changes of various stages of apoptosis four days after HDMP treatment in a case with AML-M3. Morphologic evidence of apoptosis induced by HDMP were also detected on Wright-stained and toluidine blue stained semithin sections of BM preparations in a patient with AML-M4 and AML-M3 respectively. These findings suggest that HDMP which could induce in vivo terminal differentiation in myeloid leukemic cells is also able to induce apoptosis in patients with AML. The possibility of HDMP-induced apoptosis should be evaluated in a larger series of patients with AML and other types of malignant tumors. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Rize in Turkey was contaminated by the Chernobyl accident in 1986. A comprehensive study was planned and carried out to determine the radioactivity levels and heavy metal concentrations in four food categories collected in Rize in 2008, 2009 and 2010. RESULTS: Tomato showed the highest concentration of 238U, at 9.43 ± 0.128 Bq kg?1, whereas the lowest concentration of 0.20 ± 0.02 Bq kg?1 was measured in aubergine samples. The highest concentration of 232Th was measured at 3.22 ± 0.29 Bq kg?1 in grape samples. 40K was found to contribute the highest activity in all the food samples. The highest activity concentration of 137Cs was 10.20 ± 4.19 Bq kg?1, for parsley. The average contribution range of each of the heavy metals to the dietary intake was 0.13–9.14, 0.27–34.63, 0.05–3.62, 0.11–14.97, 0.78–8.51 and 0.01–1.57 mg, respectively, for Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni and As. CONCLUSION: The range of radioactivity levels in food samples of the present study is of no risk to public health. Heavy metal concentrations of Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni and As obtained were far below the established values by FAO/WHO limits. Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献

This study presents regression analysis method used for prediction and investigation of neutronic performance in a hybrid
reactor using UO2 fuel and Flibe (Li2BeF4) coolant. The 235U fraction is increased gradually from 0 to 4% stepped by 1% and the 6Li fraction within the Flibe coolant is enriched gradually to 30, 60 and 90% from 7.5%. Relations between 235U fuel fraction and lithium (6Li) enrichment are investigated for the estimation of neutronic performance as the tritium breeding ratio (TBR), energy multiplication
factor (M), total fission rate (Σf), 238U (n,γ) reaction and fissile fuel breeding (FFB) in the hybrid reactor. Regression analysis by results obtained by using the code
(XSDRNPM/SCALE5) for TBR, M, Σf, 238U (n,γ) and FFB are performed. The results of the regression analysis and the values obtained by using the code (XSDRNPM/SCALE5)
are compared with respect to the TBR, M, Σf, 238U (n,γ) and FFB of the reactor. The values calculated from the obtained formulations with regression analysis are found to be in
good agreement with results obtained by using the code (XSDRNPM/SCALE5). It is observed that the derived equations from regression
analysis could provide an accurate computation of the neutronic performances so that these equations could use for the prediction
of TBR, M, Σf, 238U (n,γ) and FFB. In addition, correlation matrix is calculated to determine the degree of relationship between variables as TBR,
