Polyglycolic acid (PGA) is a class of semicrystalline, bioresorbable polymers that have been widely used in a number of applications. No other bioresorbable materials can fully replace PGA in tissue engineering. Understanding degradation mechanisms in PGA is important for improving the efficiency and effectiveness in various fields including implantation. This review begins with a discussion on terminology of polymer degradation and hydrolytic degradation mechanism with a delineative model. This review also focus on previous degradation studies taking advantage of its fast-degrading behavior and the mechanism behind hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) being the sole solvent for PGA. Finally, the merits of PGA are discussed with many potential future applications along with their associated challenges. 相似文献

One way to conserve fresh water resources is by reusing water from wastewater. For instance, water can be removed from wastewater through formation of ice crystal layers by progressive freeze concentration (PFC). The application of PFC to remove water from produced water and biodiesel wastewater was assessed through the final concentration of concentrated wastewater and purity of melted ice crystals. No PFC study has been done on these applications. In order to evaluate the efficiency of PFC, the effective partition constant (K) and separation efficiency (SE) were calculated for the effect of stirring rate and coolant temperature. The results demonstrate that PFC is a more practical method for produced water, as compared to biodiesel wastewater which is based on the value of low K and high SE. 相似文献

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is one of the building material capable of enhancing the design and structural integrity of the building. Since its recognition as conventional insulating material in 1950s, EPS has been experiencing swift progress in other new implementations. Currently, EPS is utilized in many building structures owing to its sustainability benefit and improvement in terms of energy efficiency, durability, and indoor environmental quality. This article provides an overview on the application of EPS as aggregates in lightweight concrete, decorative tiles and molding, panel application (structural insulated panels (SIPs) and composite SIPs), and embankment backfilling. Azelate polyols of 2000 g mol?1 have been successfully prepared via esterification of renewable azelaic acid with linear diols containing different number of CH2 repeating units. Structure–property correlation of the azelate polyols had been evaluated in thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs). TPUs based on azelate polyols of longer chained linear diols with >4 CH2 repeat units retained higher degrees of crystallinity associated with the polyol soft segment. The ratio of hydrogen bonded urethane in the hard segment to free urethane phase mixed with the soft segment in the TPUs showed a complex oscillating dependence with increased number of CH2 repeating unit in the linear diols of azelate polyols. Correspondingly, static and dynamic properties of TPUs also showed the oscillatory dependence, whereby dynamic properties maximized with odd number of CH2 repeating unit and material strength maximized with even number of CH2 repeating unit. The requirement for new flexible adaptive grippers is the ability to detect and recognize objects in their environments. It is known that robotic manipulators are highly nonlinear systems, and an accurate mathematical model is difficult to obtain, thus making it difficult make decision strategies using conventional techniques. Here, an adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for controlling input displacement and object recognition of a new adaptive compliant gripper is presented. The grasping function of the proposed adaptive multi-fingered gripper relies on the physical contact of the finger with an object. This design of the each finger has embedded sensors as part of its structure. The use of embedded sensors in a robot gripper gives the control system the ability to control input displacement of the gripper and to recognize particular shapes of the grasping objects. Fuzzy based controllers develop a control signal according to grasping object shape which yields on the firing of the rule base. The selection of the proper rule base depending on the situation can be achieved by using an ANFIS strategy, which becomes an integrated method of approach for the control purposes. In the designed ANFIS scheme, neural network techniques are used to select a proper rule base, which is achieved using the back propagation algorithm. The chemical composition of the lipophilic excretion ofMyxococcus xanthus inhibitory to the germination of fungal spores and growth has been investigated. The inhibitory effect was attributed to
a mixture of fungistatically acting fatty acids and a component of antibiotic character. The fatty acid mixture has been fully
characterized and found to constitute a mixture of saturated (68%) and unsaturated (32%) structures in the C13–C17 range. The major part is methylbranched of theiso-type, with 13-methyltetradecanoic acid being the main component (33% of the total). The fungistatic activity of the fatty
acid mixture on spore germination is attributed to the structures withiso-configuration. The presence of unsaturation is of minor importance. Observed morphological changes of the spores and hyphae

Soybean oil (SBO) was blended with 10–40% palm kernel olein (PKO) to obtain SBO:PKO blends with different degrees of unsaturation. Oil‐in‐water (O/W) emulsions were then prepared with 70 wt‐% of SBO or SBO:PKO blends and monitored for their chemical destabilization after an accelerated oxidation process up to 12 days at 60 °C. The formation rate of hydroperoxides, as demonstrated by peroxide value (PV) evolution, throughout the oxidation period was relatively high for a fully SBO‐based emulsion as compared to those with PKO incorporation. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic method was also performed in parallel with PV determination, providing further information on structural changes of the functional groups due to lipid oxidation in the emulsions. By using a partial least square chemometric method, a developed calibration model that was based on the spectral region between 1800 and 1480 cm?1 was shown to be able to predict the PV in oxidized emulsions over the range of 4–45 meq/kg. With a ‘leave‐one‐out’ cross‐validation optimization procedure, the calibration model provides a good coefficient of determination of 0.98 and a root mean standard error of cross‐validation of 2.09. In general, FTIR spectroscopy is a suitable technique to monitor PV in oxidized emulsions. 相似文献
