Computational aspects of the expected differential probability of 4-round AES and AES-like ciphers

In this paper we study the security of the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and AES-like block ciphers against differential cryptanalysis. Differential cryptanalysis is one of the most powerful methods for analyzing the security of block ciphers. Even though no formal proofs for the security of AES against differential cryptanalysis have been provided to date, some attempts to compute the maximum expected differential probability (MEDP) for two and four rounds of AES have been presented recently. In this paper, we will improve upon existing approaches in order to derive better bounds on the EDP for two and four rounds of AES based on a slightly simplified S-box. More precisely, we are able to provide the complete distribution of the EDP for two rounds of this AES variant with five active S-boxes and methods to improve the estimates for the EDP in the case of six active S-boxes.     

Noise peaks influence communication in the operating room. An observational study

Noise peaks are powerful distractors. This study focuses on the impact of noise peaks on surgical teams’ communication during 109 long abdominal surgeries. We related measured noise peaks during 5-min intervals to the amount of observed communication during the same interval. Results show that noise peaks are associated with less case-relevant communication; this effect is moderated by the level of surgical experience; case-relevant communications decrease under high noise peak conditions among junior, but not among senior surgeons. However, case-irrelevant communication did not decrease under high noise level conditions, rather there was a trend to more case-irrelevant communication under high noise peaks. The results support the hypothesis that noise peaks impair communication because they draw on attentional resources rather than impairing understanding of communication. As case-relevant communication is important for surgical performance, exposure to high noise peaks in the OR should be minimised especially for less experienced surgeons.

Practitioner Summary: This study investigated whether noise during surgeries influenced the communication within surgical teams. During abdominal surgeries, noise levels were measured and communication was observed. Results showed that high noise peaks reduced the frequency of patient-related communication, but did not reduce patient-irrelevant communication. Noise may negatively affect team coordination in surgeries.     

Development of active matrix LCD for use in high‐resolution adaptive headlights

Conventional adaptive driving beam headlamps are limited in achieving still higher quantities of switchable pixels by the number of LEDs and movable elements needed. In this paper, it is shown that by integrating an active matrix liquid crystal display module, it is possible to realize fully adaptive high‐resolution headlights without mechanical elements and a finite number of LED with 30 k switchable pixels.     

First experiences with the Polish Optical Internet

The paper describes the new development programme of the Polish information infrastructure. The programme, called in Polish PIONIER: (English—PIONEER) Polish Optical Internet, Advanced Applications, Services and Technologies for the Information Society, has been proposed to the Polish State Committee for Scientific Research and has been accepted. The aim of the programme is to create an advanced infrastructure together with tools, services and applications available to the entire scientific community and eventually to government and local administrations as well as society in general. Services and applications are expected to appear as selected pilot realizations in order to verify deployed technologies. Some of the pilot realizations and testbeds are also presented in the paper.

Proteomics in ocular fluids

The focus of this article is to review recent techniques in proteomic analysis of ocular fluids. These fluids include tears, aqueous humor, and vitreous, they will also be compared to serum analysis. Furthermore, we attempt to summarize some disease correlated biomarkers in ocular fluids that were discovered through different proteomic techniques in eye diseases like dry eye, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, uveitis, or diabetic retinopathy. This review is trying to point out the importance of these biomarkers for clinical applications.

A new generation of beam deflection technique is the basis for the development of electron beam (EB) technologies, which are not realisable with conventional methods. A high frequency 3D‐beam deflection makes possible multi‐field, multi‐pool and multi‐process technologies for EB welding und EB surface treatment, which result in a clear higher productivity and new combinations of properties.
