Identified hair follicle afferent boutons in the spinal cord of the cat are enriched with L-glutamate-like immunoreactivity

Hair follicle afferent boutons in the spinal dorsal horn of the cat were examined for L-glutamate enrichment. Two hair follicle afferent axons were labelled intra-axonally with horseradish peroxidase, and post-embedding immunogold reactions of L-glutamate were performed on thin sections containing horseradish peroxidase-labelled boutons. Quantitative analysis showed that hair follicle boutons were associated with immunogold reactions for L-glutamate which were almost twice as dense as average values for dorsal horn tissue. Further analysis revealed that hair afferent boutons displayed 2.3-times the average gold particle density associated with post-synaptic dendrites and 3-times the average immunogold density for L-glutamate of structures which were known to be immunoreactive for GABA. This enrichment of L-glutamate in identified hair afferent terminals supports the idea that the amino acid is a neurotransmitter of hair follicle primary afferent axons.     

Indications, new surgical technique and results of colon interposition or bypass in esophageal surgery

Over a 5-year period, 29 patients with esophageal disease underwent colon interposition or bypass. The indication was cure of cancer in 11 patients, who underwent earlier a gastric resection. Other indications was benign stricture in 7 patients, bypass for unrespectable cancer in 6, having a caustic injury in 3 and after an esophageal perforation in 2. In 14 patients the left colon, in 15 the right colon was used. The colon was transected without dividing the mesentery other than just along its mesenteric border. This preserves additional blood supply from the marginal artery, also improves the function of the graft in transporting food. Anastomosis leakage occurred in 4 cases (13.7%). Graft necrosis occurred in 2 of 29 patients, one of whom alter underwent a successful second reconstruction. The 30 day operative mortality rate was 13.7%. A colon interposition provides good quality of deglution, and is the organ of choice for patients who require an esophageal substitute and are potential candidates for long survival, or when the stomach is unsuited for replacement or bypass.     

Linkage and association between a CD4 gene polymorphism and IDDM in Danish IDDM patients. The Danish IDDM Epidemiology and Genetics Group, and The Danish Study Group of Diabetes in Childhood

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to determine the neuroradiologic findings of Marinesco-Sj?gren syndrome on plain skull radiographs, CT, and MR images. METHODS: Eight patients with proved Marinesco-Sj?gren syndrome (age range, 4 to 56 years) had a total of nine CT scans, seven MR imaging studies, and two plain radiographic examinations of the skull. The findings were reviewed retrospectively, with particular attention to the size of the posterior fossa and cerebellum. RESULTS: All patients had hypoplastic cerebellar hemispheres and a hypoplastic vermis in a small posterior fossa. One patient had a midline posterior fossa cyst and another had agenesis of the corpus callosum. CONCLUSION: Hypoplasia of the cerebellar hemispheres and the vermis and a small posterior fossa are the most prominent neuroradiologic findings in Marinesco-Sj?gren syndrome.     

Synthesis of 5-chloro-3'-nitro-4'-substituted salicylanilides, a new series of anthelmintic and antimicrobial agents

A number of 5-chloro-3'-nitro-4'-substituted salicylanilides (6--23) have been synthesized by treating 4',5-dichloro-3'-nitrosalicylanilide (5) with various sodium aryl oxides, alkoxides, or amines. These compounds have been tested against Hymenolepis nana infection in rats and have also been evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against various strains of bacteria and fungi. In the former test 17 was the most active cestodicidal agent showing activity at 30 mg/kg. In the antimicrobial screening, 22 inhibited the growth of all the bacteria and fungi used while 6 was active against the penicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus at a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.00609 microgram/mL.
