Abstract

The Nile brings virtually no water to the sea. The mighty basin with 1/10 of Africa's land area and 1/3 of its population, has only 1/16 of its water. The riparian countries use practically all of the Nile's water and they face increasing challenges in terms of environmental degradation, food security, and socioeconomic development. The geopolitical situation blocks the integrated development of water resources in the basin scale, yet the political environment may be improving. The Nile basin is among the most critical regions of the world in terms of water resources development. In this article, the trends of the major driving forces within the basin countries—population, urbanization, climate, agriculture, economy, human resources, and governance—are scrutinized from the viewpoint of their impacts on water resources and their management. A comparison is made to four other critical macroregions: China, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Africa.  相似文献

In this study, the physical and chemical properties of bottom ash and fly ash originating from the co-combustion of biomass-derived fuels (i.e. wood chips, sawdust, bark, and peat) from a 32 MW fluidized bed boiler at a municipal district heating plant were investigated. Silicate minerals were predominant in the bottom ash and calcium minerals in the fly ash, with most of the inorganic nutrients and heavy metals being enriched in the fly ash. The enrichment factors for heavy metals in the fly ash varied between 0.2 for silicon and 16.3 for lead, and for plant nutrients, between 1.5 for phosphorous and 108 for potassium. However, all heavy metal concentrations in both the bottom ash and fly ash were significantly lower than the current Finnish limit for maximum allowable heavy metal concentrations for forest fertilizers, which came into force in March 2007. According to the particle size distribution, the mass loadings of heavy metals in the fly ash were more than 90% contributed by the smallest particle size fraction lower than 0.074 mm. In the bottom ash, between 83.6 and 91.9% of the mass loadings of heavy metals were contributed by the particle size fraction between 0.5 and 2.0 mm.  相似文献

In aqueous solutions the response of polymers and biological matter to external conditions, such as temperature and pH, is typically based on the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance and its effects on the polymer conformation. In the solid state, related concepts using competing interactions could allow novel functions. In this work we demonstrate that polymeric self-assembly, reversibility of hydrogen bonding, and polymer-additive phase behaviour allow temperature response in the solid state with large and reversible switching of an optical bandgap. A complex of polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridinium methanesulphonate) and 3-n-pentadecylphenol leads to the supramolecular comb-shaped architecture with a particularly long lamellar period. The sample is green at room temperature, as an incomplete photonic bandgap due to a dielectric reflector is formed. On heating, hydrogen bonds are broken and 3-n-pentadecylphenol additionally becomes soluble in polystyrene, leading to a sharp and reversible transition at approximately 125 degrees C to uncoloured material due to collapse of the long period. This encourages further developments, for example, for functional coatings or sensors in the solid state.  相似文献

In this study, experimental test equipment developed in‐house was used to study the compaction behavior of stitched quasi‐unidirectional (UD) non‐crimp fabrics (NCF) during the pre‐filling, filling, and post‐filling stages of the vacuum infusion (VI) process. The effects of the stitch pattern, stitch tension, and fiber sizing of reinforcements, as well as the effect of nesting of fiber bundles in neighboring layers, were studied. Moreover, the effects of cyclic compaction, resin viscosity, and different post‐filling strategies were studied. The developed experimental test equipment provided an applicable measuring method for characterizing the compaction behavior of both the dry and resin‐impregnated reinforcements. The effects of the stitching parameters and fiber nesting of reinforcements were found. DSP software development has been tied down by extreme computational requirements. Furthermore, the DSP development tools available today are less advanced than in other embedded software design. This has lead to DSP software architectures that have not taken into account future expansion needs. Therefore, DSP software architectures have been inherently closed. Now, as system complexity increases, this design methodology becomes more of a burden, since it does not support component-based DSP software development that requires open interfaces.

In this paper, mobile-communications DSP software architectures are studied as cases, and key areas for improvements towards more open DSP software development are identified. Proposed solutions are judged against the limited resources of mobile communication terminals and the characteristics of communication DSPs.  相似文献

Abstract. The appearance of sawn timber has huge natural variations that the human inspector easily compensates for mentally when determining the types of defects and the grade of each board. However, for automatic wood inspection systems these variations are a major source for complication. This makes it difficult to use textbook methodologies for visual inspection. These methodologies generally aim at systems that are trained in a supervised manner with samples of defects and good material, but selecting and labeling the samples is an error-prone process that limits the accuracy that can be achieved. We present a non-supervised clustering-based approach for detecting and recognizing defects in lumber boards. A key idea is to employ a self-organizing map (SOM) for discriminating between sound wood and defects. Human involvement needed for training is minimal. The approach has been tested with color images of lumber boards, and the achieved false detection and error escape rates are low. The approach also provides a self-intuitive visual user interface. We consider several perceptual issues in the context of machine recognition ofmusic patterns. It is argued that a successful implementation of a musicrecognition system must incorporate perceptual information and error criteria.We discuss several measures of rhythm complexity which are used fordetermining relative weights of pitch and rhythm errors. Then, a new methodfor determining a localized tonal context is proposed. This method is based onempirically derived key distances. The generated key assignments are then usedto construct the perceptual pitch error criterion which is based on noterelatedness ratings obtained from experiments with human listeners.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an efficient variable neighborhood search heuristic for the capacitated vehicle routing problem. The objective is to design least cost routes for a fleet of identically capacitated vehicles to service geographically scattered customers with known demands. The variable neighborhood search procedure is used to guide a set of standard improvement heuristics. In addition, a strategy reminiscent of the guided local search metaheuristic is used to help escape local minima. The developed solution method is specifically aimed at solving very large scale real-life vehicle routing problems. To speed up the method and cut down memory usage, new implementation concepts are used. Computational experiments on 32 existing large scale benchmarks, as well as on 20 new very large scale problem instances, demonstrate that the proposed method is fast, competitive and able to find high-quality solutions for problem instances with up to 20,000 customers within reasonable CPU times.  相似文献
