Continuing a survey of contractors' perceptions about alternative dispute resolution (ADR) this paper seeks to report an investigation of the level of involvement of legal advisors to the construction industry in the dispute resolution process and the perceptions that legal professionals have about the use of ADR in construction disputes. The research findings are that contractors are likely to involve lawyers in the dispute resolution procedure, particularly when disputes concern a legal issue, when the parties to the dispute are entrenched in their argument, or when the other party insists on using legal professional assistance. In these defined circumstances, legal advisors will be influential in determining the potential use of ADR. The paper concludes that lawyers are unlikely to recommend ADR for most disputes between contractors, particularly if the dispute resolution process is perceived to involve the use of delay by main contractors, if the parties are fixed in their arguments or if they are exhibiting adversarial behaviour in their approach to the dispute. In these circumstances lawyers and their clients prefer the force of the formal systems over conciliatory ADR procedures.  相似文献

Porous polyurethane networks containing covalently attached zwitterionic compounds dihydroxypolycaprolactone phosphorylcholine and 1,2-dihydroxy-N,N-dimethylamino-propane sulfonate have been prepared and characterised. Three polymers were prepared by reacting methyl 2,6-diisocyanato hexanoate functionalised d-glucose as prepolymer A with either polycaprolactone triol alone or with addition of 10 mol% zwitterion as prepolymer B. All polymer compositions were mixed with 10 wt% hydrated gelatin beads. The cured polymers with the gelatin beads showed compression strengths that were still suitable for use in articular cartilage repair. The incorporation of zwitterions yielded more hydrophilic polymers that showed increased water absorption and increased porosity. After four months degradation in phosphate buffered saline, the polymers containing zwitterions had approximately 50% mass loss compared with 30% mass loss for that with polycaprolactone triol alone. All polymers were non-toxic in chondrocyte-based assays. Subcutaneous implantation of these polymers into rats confirmed that the polymers degraded slowly. Only a very mild inflammatory response was observed and the polymers were able to support new, well vascularised tissue formation.  相似文献

Hemodialysis patients characteristically suffer from a range of unpleasant symptoms. Uremic pruritus effects close to half of the chronic kidney disease population, reducing quality of life and associated with increased mortality. Its pathophysiology though is poorly understood; currently deployed therapeutic approaches are ineffective. Excessive levels of skin and soft tissue sodium accumulate in dialysis patients, producing a range of biological consequences, including inflammation. We report an index case of a hemodialysis patient with debilitating pruritus and extreme levels of tissue sodium, measured with Sodium-23 magnetic resonance imaging. Both the tissue sodium loading and pruritus responded fully to initiation of expanded hemodialysis therapy with a recently introduced medium cutoff dialysis membrane-based dialyzer.  相似文献

Human settlement of Polynesia was a major event in world prehistory. Despite the vastness of the distances covered, research suggests that prehistoric Polynesian populations maintained spheres of continuing interaction for at least some period of time in some regions. A low level of genetic variation in ancestral Polynesian populations, genetic admixture (both prehistoric and post-European contact), and severe population crashes resulting from introduction of European diseases make it difficult to trace prehistoric human mobility in the region by using only human genetic and morphological markers. We focus instead on an animal that accompanied the ancestral Polynesians on their voyages. DNA phylogenies derived from mitochondrial control-region sequences of Pacific rats (Rattus exulans) from east Polynesia are presented. A range of specific hypotheses regarding the degree of interaction within Polynesia are tested. These include the issues of multiple contacts between central east Polynesia and the geographically distinct archipelagos of New Zealand and Hawaii. Results are inconsistent with models of Pacific settlement involving substantial isolation after colonization and confirm the value of genetic studies on commensal species for elucidating the history of human settlement.  相似文献

At 1 year, 4 years, and 10 years after baseline, late-middle-aged adults reported whether they had successfully resolved their most important stressor of the past year. Compared to individuals who never resolved focal stressors over the 10-year interval, those who always did consistently showed less negative stressor appraisal, less reliance on avoidance coping, and less use of exploratory relative to directed coping responses, independent of type and severity of focal stressor. Less use of exploratory relative to directed coping and having more social resources, fewer health problems, and fewer depressive symptoms at baseline predicted more stressor resolution over the next 10 years. Examined semantic processing of sentences by 30 younger (mean age 25.1 yrs) and 30 older (mean age 68.5 yrs) adults, using a priming technique. Ss read a sentence and then made a lexical decision about a target presented immediately after the sentence. For both age groups, word targets that were instruments implied by the action of the sentence had faster latencies than unrelated word targets. There was no evidence of inhibition of unrelated targets, suggesting that the facilitation of instrument targets involved automatic processes. Results provide no evidence for age-related changes in semantic processing of sentences, including access to implied information. Older Ss did, however, have poorer memory for the sentences on a recognition test. It is suggested that previous findings by G. Cohen (see PA, Vols 63:747 and 67:958) of age deficits in comprehension may depend on techniques that measure what is remembered rather than what is understood. 1. Previous studies in our laboratory have shown that the synthetic xanthine analogue denbufylline, a selective type 4 phosphodiesterase (PDE-4) inhibitor, is a potent activator of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis when given orally or intraperitoneally (i.p.) to adult male rats. This paper describes the results of experiments in which well established in vivo and in vitro methods were used to compare the effects of denbufylline on HPA function with those of two other selective PDE-4 inhibitors, rolipram and BRL 61063 (1,3-dicyclopropylmethyl-8-amino-xanthine). For comparison, parallel measurements of the immunoreactive- (ir-) luteinising hormone (LH) were made where appropriate. 2. When injected intraperitoneally, rolipram (40 and 200 micrograms kg-1, P < 0.005), denbufylline (0.07-0.6 microgram kg-1, P < 0.05) and BRL 61063 (30 micrograms kg-1, P < 0.005) each produced marked rises in the serum ir-corticosterone concentrations. However, lower doses of rolipram (1.6 and 8 micrograms kg-1) and BRL 61063 (0.25-6 micrograms kg-1) were without effect (P > 0.05). By contrast, intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of rolipram (8 ng-1 micrograms kg-1) or denbufylline (50 ng-1 microgram kg-1) failed to influence the serum ir-corticosterone concentration. BRL 61063 (8-120 ng kg-1, i.c.v.) was also ineffective in this regard although at a higher dose (1 microgram kg-1, i.c.v.) it produced a small but significant (P < 0.05) increase in ir-corticosterone release. Denbufylline also increased the serum ir-LH concentration when given peripherally (0.2-0.6 microgram kg-1, i.p., P < 0.05) or centrally (100 ng kg-1, i.c.v., P < 0.05) but rolipram (1.6-200 micrograms kg-1, i.p. or 8 ng-1 microgram kg-1, i.c.v.) and BRL 61063 (0.25-30 micrograms kg-1, i.p. or 1 ng-1 microgram kg-1, i.c.v.) did not (P > 0.05). 3. In vitro rolipram (10 microM, P < 0.01), denbufylline (1 mM, P < 0.001) and BRL 61063 (1 and 10 microM, P < 0.05) stimulated the release of corticotrophin releasing hormone (ir-CRH-41) but lower concentrations of the drugs were without effect as also was BRL 61063 at 100 microM (P > 0.05); the rank order of potency was thus BRL 61063 > rolipram > denbufylline. The adenylyl cyclase activator forskolin (100 microM, P < 0.01) also stimulated the release of ir-CRH-41, producing effects which were additive with those of rolipram and denbufylline but not with those of BRL 61063. The secretory responses to forskolin (100 microM) were accompanied by a highly significant increase in the cyclic AMP content of the hypothalamic tissue (P < 0.005). Rolipram (10 microM) also significantly (P < 0.05) elevated the hypothalamic cyclic AMP but denbufylline (10 mM) and BRL 61063 (10 microM) did not. However, all three PDE-inhibitors potentiated the rise in cyclic AMP induced by forskolin (P < 0.05). None of the drugs tested, alone or in combination, modified the release of arginine vasopressin (ir-AVP) from the hypothalamus. 4. Rolipram (100 microM), denbufylline (100 microM) and BRL 61063 (100 microM) stimulated the release of corticotrophin (ir-ACTH) from pituitary tissue in vitro (P < 0.05) but in lower concentrations they were without significant effect. In addition, rolipram (10 microM, P < 0.05), denbufylline (0.1 microM, P < 0.05) and BRL 61063 (10 microM, P < 0.05) potentiated the significant (P < 0.05) rises in ir-ACTH secretion induced by forskolin (100 microM). Forskolin (100 microM) also produced a highly significant increase (P < 0.01) in the tissue cyclic AMP content which was further potentiated by rolipram (10 microM), denbufylline (10 microM) and BRL 61063 (10 microM) which, alone did not affect the cyclic AMP content of the tissue. 5. Since both denbufylline and BRL 61063 possess significant adenosine A1 receptor blocking activity, further studies examined the potential influence of these receptors on the secretion in vitro of CRH-41, AVP and ACTH. The release of ir-CRH-41 was increased significantly by adenosine deaminase (ADA, 5microml-1, P<0.05) and the A1-receptor antagonist, 1,3-dicyclopropyl-8-cyclopentylxanthine (DPCPX, 0.1-10nM, P<0.05). The responses to ADA were abolished by the A1 receptor agonist N6-cyclo-hexyladenosine (CHA, 100nM, P<0.05) which alone had no significant effect on ir-CRH-41 release. ADA (0.1-10microml-1) and DPCPX (1nM) had weak stimulant and inhibitory effects, respectively, on the release of ir-ACTH from the pituitary gland while CHA (0.1-10nM) was without effect. Ligand binding studies with [3H]-DPCPX as a probe demonstrated the presence of specific high affinity A1 binding sites in the hypothalamus (Kd=0.7nM; Bmax=367+/-32fmolmg-1 protein) and in the hippocampus (Kd=1nM; Bmax=1165 +/-145fmolmg-1 protein). In both tissues binding of the ligand was displaced by CHA (IC50=1nM (hypothalamus) and 2nM (hippocampus)), BRL 61063 (IC50=80nM (hypothalamus) and 100nM (hippocampus)) and denbufylline (IC50=5microM (hypothalamus) and 9microM(hippocampus)) but not by rolipram. 6.The results suggest that rolipram, denblufylline and BRL 61063 stimulate the HPA axis in the rat, acting at the levels of both the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. Their actions may be explained, at least in part, by inhibition of PDE-4 but additional actions including blockade of hypothalamic adenosine A1 receptors by denbufylline and BRL 61063 cannot be excluded.  相似文献

Recent research points toward the viability of conceptualizing alcohol problems as arrayed along a continuum. Nevertheless, modern statistical techniques designed to scale multiple problems along a continuum (latent trait modeling; LTM) have rarely been applied to alcohol problems. This study applies LTM methods to data on 110 problems reported during in-person interviews of 1,348 middle-aged men (mean age=43) from the general population. The results revealed a continuum of severity linking the 110 problems, ranging from heavy and abusive drinking, through tolerance and withdrawal, to serious complications of alcoholism. These results indicate that alcohol problems can be arrayed along a dimension of severity and emphasize the relevance of LTM to informing the conceptualization and assessment of alcohol problems. Although morphological sex differences are pervasive in the primary visual cortex of hooded rats, it is not known whether sex differences occur in vision in these rats. In this study, grating acuity was measured in a forced-choice Y maze and a jumping stand in adult hooded rats, and vernier acuity thresholds were established in the jumping stand. With a criterion of 34 correct/50 trials, the number of correct choices for both sexes was high (1.0–1.6 cycles per degree [c/deg]) for spatial gratings. Female rats made more correct identifications of the coarse gratings (0.125 and 0.25 c/deg) than male rats, but no sex differences were found for higher spatial frequencies. In contrast, male rats were better at detecting smaller vernier offsets in both the individual criterion and group averages than female rats, and all of the rats detected vernier misalignments at 34.1 min (equivalent to 1.75 c/deg), which is above their grating acuity.
